After just now looking at the 12/27/06 Mary Frank post (below), I wonder whether my 12/21/06 posted response to PAT (also below-- to obmijtap@sbcglobal.net) had gotten somewhat lost in the shuffle, very likely because I had changed the subject line on 12/21/06-- to give my response more specificity. I've complained to Ancestry.com several times about this, but Ancestry still does not provide a single online 19th century directory for Chicago (America's second most populous city in 1890), unlike New York City, Philadelphia, and even then tiny Los Angeles, all represented by several directories-- and also unlike Milwaukee, represented by both the 1889-1990 directory (http://ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=4749) and the fine Milwaukee Elite Directory for 1891 (http://ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=5259). One thing I noticed several months ago that you can do via Ancestry.com's two-year Milwaukee directory database 1889-90 is that, once you've received the address of one person your interested in, you can then find the names of all others (or at least all adult males) living at that same address by going back, clearing the boxes, and adding only the address under "KEY WORD(S)" (possibly no surprise to many researchers) .............John (in metro Chicago) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Subj: Re: [WIMILWAU] Question Date: 12/27/2006 11:21:52 A.M. Central Standard Time From: obmijtap@sbcglobal.net Reply-to: wimilwau@rootsweb.com To: wimilwau@rootsweb.com Is there a kind soul that would check the city directory of 1900 for a Friederich or Frederick Wilde? His wife was Ernestine and he was a "cutter" or perhaps a tailor. He did not die until 1907 but I can't find him on the 1900 census. Any help will be much appreciated. Pat =========================================== Presumably Fred's relative? Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie WILDE (1854-1900), the famous Irish playwright-novelist-poet, was living in London, UK, in 1889-1890-- before being imprisoned there in 1895 for naughty behavior (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oscar_wilde), Pat, etc.-- I'm about 90 miles away from the Milwaukee directories at Milwaukee's Central Library. Why not be daring and call the nice people at the Humanities Room of the Milwaukee's Central Library (814 W. Wisconsin Ave) at 414-286-3000 and address some questions to them directly. The Library is open (CST) M-W 9 am to 8:30 pm, Th-Sat 9am to 5:30, Sun (closed Sundays May-Sept.)? ..............John ( in metro Chicago) ------------------------------------------------------- In the meantime, Pat, hopefully the following might be helpful---> http://ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=4749 Frederick F.
