Gone, but certainly not forgotten: Legends honored for their ties to city /Posted: Feb. 1, 2007/ These folks - as well as one gorilla and one puppet - are no longer around to bask in the acclaim, but here's the list of people who made Milwaukee famous. Nearly 5,000 people voted in the Legends of Milwaukee contest for those who were either born in Milwaukee or made their mark on our fair city. Voting closed at midnight last Friday, and the top two winners in each of eight categories were announced this week at a gathering celebrating Milwaukee's 161st birthday, sponsored by the Milwaukee Press Club. So raise a glass of Milwaukee's finest to toast the winners:

    3. Thanks Mary. This was great. Houdini was from Wisconsin. Was he from Milwaukee? At 09:08 AM 2/2/2007, you wrote: >http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=560542 > >Be sure to see the "More Photos" link under "The Crusher's" photo on the >right side.

    3. Houdini grew up in Appleton. He was born in Budapest. His father was Appleton's first rabbi. When Edna Ferber first started to write, she lived in Appleton, and interviewed Houdini. At the Outagamie County Museum on College Avenue, here in Appleton, there are exhibits all about Houdini. Many of his "tricks" are explained and there's his original handcuffs, straight-jackets, billboards, etc. Every year on Halloween, a séance is held. He was a great believer in debunking spiritualists but promised if he got to the "other side", he would contact people on Halloween, that's day he died from a ruptured appendix. He led a very fascinating life. Gail in Appleton <SNIP> > Thanks Mary. This was great. Houdini was from Wisconsin.
