Bob: FYI - this is a short version of what is going around on the other mailing lists: 1: A new email virus called _BadTrans_ is spreading quickly through the net. People should visit the following links: http://vil.nai.com/vil/virusSummary.asp?virus_k=99069 ... for complete details of the virus. And http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/ bulletin/MS01-020.asp ... where you will find a patch from Microsoft that will help prevent some forms of infection by this and other verii like it. 2. Dealing with the effects of this virus. Although your own computer may not be infected with this virus, someone you know might be. One of the behaviors of this virus is to automatically send out numerous copies of itself to people in the victims address book. This has the unfortunate effect of filling up ones mailbox and when this occurs, the users ISP server starts "bouncing" messages back to Rootsweb. After five bounces, the Rootsweb software automatically unsubscribes you from the Mailing List and you have to re-subscribe (after you've emptied your message box at your ISP server). -----Original Message----- From: Gartzr@aol.com <Gartzr@aol.com> To: WIMILWAU-L@rootsweb.com <WIMILWAU-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Saturday, December 01, 2001 7:12 PM Subject: Re: [WiMilwau] VIRUS >From what I read, probably not but it sounds like it will go out to all the people you have received e-mails from but have not read as of yet. Here are the exact words of Fabian Enterprises: A new variant of Badtrans has been discovered, referred to as Badtrans.b. AVERT has raised the Risk Assessment on this variant of W32/Badtrans@MM to HIGH RISK for Consumers. We have received many reports from the home users that they have become infected. It is believed that failure to upsdate virus scanners recently has caused this increase in occurance. ... It is a mass-mailing worm that drops a remote-access Trojan. The virus arrives via email in Microsoft Outlook and attemts to send itself by replying to unread email messages. I am trying to find even more detailed information and if find, will let you know where to find it also.
