Thats one good reason to keep conversations on list. List mail cannot transmit an attachment, and most of the email viruses that have been going around the last couple of years have been as an attachment. Off list mail can have any kind of attachment. The .bat file is a standard file extension, although I don't know if it is still used. There is info here http://www.ace.net.nz/tech/TechFileFormat.html Unfortunately some viruses also use .bat extensions and the Sircam virus used it last summer http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.sircam.worm@mm.ht ml Your antivirus program, if updated and properly configured should easily handle any virus that old. But the easiest way, if it is a concern, is just to respond on list, rather than off list. Bob Fay
