    3. Hello Susan, I don't know yet if LINGER has any connection to my Ida Caroline LINGE. Your mention of the "Washington Highlands" is interesting to me. My grandparents built a home at 6466 Upper Parkway N. in 1926. My father lived there until 1988 when he died. My siblings and I grew up in that house. Yes, I still live in WI. Appleton is 100 mi. north of Milwaukee. I have more to ask you about but will email you personally later in the week. Thanks, Helen -----Original Message----- From: Susan Nokes [mailto:snokes@tscnet.com] Sent: Saturday, January 12, 2002 9:27 AM To: WIMILWAU-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [WiMilwau] New Surname Postings Hi, My mother and her sister attended St. Sebastian's Catholic Church. 1. [WiMilwau] Could anyone take pictures for me?
    2. Susan Nokes
    3. Helen and others, Does anyone still live anywhere near "The Highlands?" My great-grandmother, Annie LINGER, nee OTT lived at: 34 Upper Parkway, Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. I would have loved to have found it and taken a picture of it...but never did find it. I think I have a picture of it in my grandmothers old photo album--and would recognize it even today--if I could have located it. I don't know where 943 Central Avenue was, but this was where my grandmother was delivered by a Dr. J.T. Scolland M.D.on Oct. 31, 1900. I would have loved to have found it and taken a picture of it...but never did find it. After the death of his wife, Annie, Dr. Linger built two houses on 61st St. He lived at 2450 N. 61st St. Dr. LINGER also built the LINGER BUILDING...no longer in existence. It had a Restaurant & Store and was located at (Vliet St. 1131-1133N Vliet). There were several apartments and offices above the Restaurant and store. In 1961 the Building sold--if you could call it that---basically, the city of Milwaukee forced my grandmother to sell--so they could build a freeway there. I still have a few of the dishes from the old diner. Lorraine HOPPE, nee Linger, lived in the house next door to her father, Joseph. She married Herbert O. HOPPE on November 14, 1919. Dr. Joseph LINGER paid for Herb Hoppe's Schooling (2 1/2 years High School--4 years College). Joseph also fed and housed Herb, Lorraine, Marilyn and Coreen while Herb was in dental school at Marquette University. Dr. Joseph LINGER gave his daughter Lorraine the home he built on 61st in 1929. ( 2446 N 61st Street )...This was where my mother grew up and where my father began courting her. I have pictures of both of these houses. The family attended St. Sebastian's Catholic Church. My mother had her First Holy Communion there in the Church of St. Sebatians, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Sunday May 6, 1934...Father O. Haertle, Pastor. I believe her Confirmation sponsor was a Mrs. Stakel--bout would have to look that up. Lorraine HOPPE, nee LINGER worked 3 days a week from 10am to 10pm teaching piano in order to clothe her family and have spending money. It was during this time that she contracted TB from one of her students. Anyway--hope some of you out there enjoyed the reminiscing, If anyone in the Milwaukee area could locate these houses and take pictures of them, it would mean so much to me... Thank you in advance, Susan snokes@tscnet.com
