I have recently come across the namd Brisen Germany in the 1870 census and Breusen on a birth cert. from Ill. Does anyone know where this place is?

There was a Deutsch Briesen just SE of Konitz (current Polish names Brzezno and Chojnice). There may be other places called Briesen. If you can get to a genealogy library, check Meyers Gazetteer. It was published in 1912 and so contains all place names that were part of Germany prior to WWI.
