- The census will be available on April 1 at any National Archives center. Closest one to Milwaukee would be in Chicago. Only a few states in the southeast are soundexed. If you are looking for someone in about 100 of the largest cities there is help on the internet. First of all you must find the address of the family. Most large libraries have city directories from that time. The National Archives has them on microfilm. Once you have the address you can go online at http://home.pacbell.net/spmorse/census and plug in your street and cross street if known (go to mapquest.com to find cross streets) and the program will come up with several EDs in the area. Of course you'll have to search the entire ED to find the family, but it's better than the entire city. If the family lives in a smaller town or rural area, you'll have to search the entire town or county. And if you only know the state they live in--well then it's almost impossible. Cyndislist has this URL as well as other helps on the 1930 census at www.cyndislist.com/census.htm I vounteer at the National Archives in so. Calif and I know it will be a zoo in there come April 1!!!
