You can get maps from them, though the newest part of Union is not on the map I picked up. I found the staff weren't very friendly or helpful. However, I found my great-grandparents and my gg-grandparents at Union by tracking down the cemetary records on microfilm here at UWM. The plot numbers are located on the microfilm, and using the map from the cemetary, I was able to find the graves. (When I had contacted them earlier by phone, they didn't do an adequate job of checking, and gave me the name of a Georg Frank with some other last name, rather than the George Frank who was my gg-grandpa.) I think I've got people in the newer part, too, so I'll probably have to traipse back out to Graceland to find out if there is any kind of map for the newer part of Union. I'd volunteer to look this up for you, but I'm getting quite a stack of obituaries to look up, so I don't want to overextend by promising to do Union cemetary lookups at this point. If you send me the information, I could put them on my list, if you're willing to wait awhile. I have a soft spot in my heart for Union Cemetary, since it's got my people in it, and it's only 1.5 miles from my house. I even did the "genealogy thing" by having my friend photograph me with the grave stones of my people who are buried there. Union is a beautiful old cemetary, though it is now in a segregated part of the City and most white people won't go there. Not being like most white people, I went in there and had a beautiful experience when I went back to get photographed. I found 5 young men in their 20's and 30's standing in a semi-circle around a grave right next to my gg-gpa's grave. The young men were visiting their mother/grandmother who had died a few months earlier. They had brought a little wind chime to hang next to her grave. It was very sweet and moving experience to meet and speak with them. Mary >>> "Pam Gosling" <pgosl@ev1.net> 04/01/02 05:29PM >>> Hello, I wanted to get an update on the status of Graceland/Union cemetary, and how to get burial information from there. .. last year, Bob graciously mentioned that it was very difficult to get information from there, due to the poor environs, and that the staff is not able to check for information easily if we call for requests. Now, I know I have relatives buried there, and don't see them on any of the cemetary lists so far, so looking for suggestions as to how to proceed. . .do we pay a researcher?? Or will they answer a letter?? Any leads for info would be appreciated. Thank you all for such a great list!! Mary, Do you think FRANK's and FRINK's might be the same surname? Ever heard of an Anton FRINKS? or the name LENGER/LINGER/LANGER? Susan snokes@tscnet.com
