    1. [WiMilwau] Re: What is UWM? Where is UWM? Etc. Etc.

    3. Several people have written to ask about UWM's records and location, etc. I've put together some information that might help you plan a trip to the library at UWM. The main thing to note is that the number of microfilm readers is limited (see below), but there are many, many other genealogy-related resources that you can use in addition to the microfilm records. Continue reading beyond the resources part of this email for driving/bus directions. UWM is the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. We are the second largest state-funded school (after the famous University of Wisconsin in Madison). We have approximately 22,000 students with an unusual demographic. We are the state institution that has the highest percentage of transfer students, many of our students are older students, and the vast majority of them commute to UWM's compact campus, rather than living in our four dorm towers. UWM's Golda Meir Library is a regional repository for certain types of genealogical records. (See Milwaukee Area Research Center information below). Other web pages from the UWM Golda Meir Library include: http://www.uwm.edu/Library/arch/division/index.html (Division of Archives and Special Collections) http://www.uwm.edu/Library/arch/ (Archives) http://www.uwm.edu/Dept/Library/arch/genie.htm (Genealogy) MILWAUKEE AREA RESEARCH CENTER: The Milwaukee Area Research Center (ARC) is a branch of the Wisconsin Historical Society's ARC network, which consists of thirteen centers throughout the state. The Milwaukee ARC contains over 800 collections of public records and private papers from Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Sheboygan, Washington, and Waukesha counties. Major ARC collections include birth, death, marriage, naturalization, probate, and property records for all or some of the five counties; records of Milwaukee mayor Henry Maier's administration; records of Milwaukee Downer College; and collections from many individuals and organizations involved in the civil rights movement in Milwaukee, including Lloyd Barbee, James Groppi, the Milwaukee Urban League, and the local chapter of the NAACP. HOURS: Go to this website to check hours for the dates you're interested in visiting the UWM G.M. Library: http://www.uwm.edu/Library/hours/index.html The section with the microfilm is called: Current Periodicals/Microforms Service Counter The Regular Hours are posted below, but the NGS Conference will be at a time when UWM is holding "finals" for the spring semester, so you need to check for special hours on the website listed above. During times when people (especially student people!) are waiting to use the microfilm readers, one is limited to 15 minutes on the machines. Regular Hours: Monday through Thursday 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m. Friday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Saturday 9:00 a.m. -5:00 p.m. Sunday 1:00 p.m. -9:00 p.m. The Sanborn Fire Maps (and many other old maps) are located in another area of the library known as the American Geographical Society Collection. They are open only during the following times: Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. The Wright's Directories are in the general collection, Call No. F589.M6. General library information, including a link to the online catalog, is at http://www.uwm.edu/Library/GenInfo/index.html. HOW TO FIND UWM: UWM is located on the upper east side of Milwaukee and you can take Bus #30 from downtown (Midwest Express Center) up to UWM. There are two #30 buses (Downer and Maryland)--either one will get you up to UWM. BE SURE YOU TAKE THE #30 GOING EAST, NOT THE ONE GOING WEST. The bus was $1.50 the last time I rode (a few months ago). Be sure to ask for a transfer when you take buses in Milwaukee, as you can travel back on the same route using your transfer if it hasn't expired. If you prefer to drive you can use these instructions from AAA: >From Midwest Express Center at 400 W Wisconsin Avenue, Milwaukee, Wisconsin To UWM Golda Meir Library at 2311 E Hartford Avenue, Milwaukee, Wisconsin Total Distance: 3.9 miles (6.3km) Total Est.
