Gone, but certainly not forgotten: Legends honored for their ties to city /Posted: Feb. 1, 2007/ These folks - as well as one gorilla and one puppet - are no longer around to bask in the acclaim, but here's the list of people who made Milwaukee famous. Nearly 5,000 people voted in the Legends of Milwaukee contest for those who were either born in Milwaukee or made their mark on our fair city. Voting closed at midnight last Friday, and the top two winners in each of eight categories were announced this week at a gathering celebrating Milwaukee's 161st birthday, sponsored by the Milwaukee Press Club. So raise a glass of Milwaukee's finest to toast the winners:

    1. [WIMILWAU] Online genealogy class offered by Milwaukee area teacher
    2. Mary R. Frank
    3. I have no financial interest in this. This class is being taught by Kim Baugrud. He has taught genealogy in Milwaukee before. I've never attended any of his classes, so can't vouch for the content, and there's not much of an explanation here, but if anyone is interested, you could contact him at baugrud@uwm.edu . This is an online course. With Kim's experience here in the Milwaukee area, it might be useful to some folks to take this course, if only because of the email contact you could have with Kim during the course. http://www.uwm.edu/~baugrud/ http://www.uwm.edu/Dept/SOIS/CE/classes.html Genealogy: In Search Of Your Family Program # :*M07B5110155122 <https://www.sce-secure.uwm.edu/registration/add.cfm?id=18945>* Instructor:Kim Baugrud Dates:02/26/07 - 04/07/07 Time: Online Location: Online Fee$225 Description: This introductory Genealogy course covers original research, primary and secondary sources as well as how to get started, where to look and how to record what you find. . *Online registration:* https://www.sce-secure.uwm.edu/registration/add.cfm?id=18945 | top <#top> |

    1. [WIMILWAU] Hottinger photos at Turners Club
    2. Maxine
    3. Hi Laura, The Milwaukee County Historical Society has LOTs of photos and you can browse through them on your own. They may have some on line....also try the Library of Congress photos on line. I checked the book I use for look ups and there was no Hottinger....although they have a little about the Turners. I thought the Turners were a German exercise club??? 1. [WIMILWAU] Hottinger photos at Turners Club
    2. Hello, I am searching for August and Clara Hottinger and Martin Hottinger photos. They belonged to the Swiss Turners Club (all came here from Basel, Switzerland). They were active in the German singing group. I have contacted the Turners Club and they have nothing. I did have an older contact that said he had photos and knew my Great Grandfather August and Clara. Mr. Raymond Ciocarelli - President of the Swiss American Societies of Milwaukee. I'm afraid he might have passed on. Does anyone have a contact with access to archival photos? Laura

    1. [WIMILWAU] City directory help needed
    2. Pam G
    3. Hello all, I'm trying to remember if there was a reverse address directory for Milwaukee to check on the address to get names listed for ~1930 era?? If so, if anyone can help with this, I'm interested in 903 Third St, anytime between 1924-1940. My g-grandfather Wilhelm Frederick Streese lived there with a Bertha 1924, supposedly wife? but I'm not sure, that's just what the census said, he had a different wife earlier than 1910, was alone in 1910 and I don't know about inbetween. He is alone again 1930 and disappears after that. So, just curious if there is a way to see who was at that address after 1930?? Poor guy just disappeared totally off the radar screen; maybe someday I will find him. .??!! Thanks so much for any help Sincerely, Pam in CA

    3. Every bride should have an old German (or other) grandma-type Living upstairs. When I went to make my grandma's Pierogi recipe It called for putting the dry ingredients on a breadboard, then Adding the eggs and liquids and kneading them together. This Resulted in a mess since I wasn't experienced enough to do it Gradually. Grandma Graff (bless her) explained: In the old country they Had to haul water and heat it to clean up a bowl. On the bread Board they simply scraped the remaining dough and were done! Therefore, I could put everything into my mixing bowl and simply Clean it in the sink when done. Viola! It worked well and I made pierogis without having to Clean the kitchen floor as well. I bless Grandma Graff -- not even related to me -- for all she Gave a new bride/new cook. Every bride should be given one, a grandma That is. AnnEllen Barr ellen@barrFinancial.com.

    2. I have a fetish for cook books & have found copies of the ones my Mom used to use, the ones my Stepmother used to use & I still have my first cook book that was a gift & my first handwritten cookbook from when I took my home economics classes in grade school....the Elephant Ears, Watermelon Rind Pickles and Creamed Tuna on Toast are some of my first achievements..... My grandma & my Mom hardly ever wrote things down....they just made things.... i have been able to get the list of ingredients from my Mom for several of her best recipes, but trial & error on figuring out the amounts are endless.....but I'll figure them out, if it takes the rest of my life!!! I also READ cookbooks & highlight the ones I would like to try...I used to make X's on the ones I have tried.....some people make them on the ones they want to try.....

    2. I am a great one for writing in the margins next to the recipes, but I make important notes as to the date I made it, who I made it for or what holiday it was......some recipes have become certain holiday traditions....I don't make it all year, except for that particular holiday.....I find myself still making things that I made when I was with my first husband, years ago.....I'm carrying over old created traditions..... I was raised by several families when I was growing up & I have recipes from all of them..... I however am childless, that is why I am passing on my treasured recipes to my friends & their families..... My friends & I are also exchanging recipes....we are from diverse family he ritages & have much to share with each other...

    2. I have discovered an old autograph book my Mom had saved, from her school days....it has numerous poems & signatures from cousins & school chums & more....we believe it may be from the 1920's... I will always cherish it.... I have also found an old diary I kept as a child, it had accounts from several family vacations in it.....I hope someday to follow the directions I kept & revisit the places I had been to as a child... And of course I plan to pass on the diary & autograph book some day.... I have also found a wonderful book that I can answer questions & fill in the blanks about my life & my family.....I am filling in as much as possible & then I plan to leave it to my younger sister & her daughters to continue filling it up with things from their lives & keep passing it on.....I sure hope they will cherish it as I have......it has lots of info about my grandparents & many memories.....I plan to include photos & letters too.... We must keep our ancestors alive and make their lives worth as much as possible!!!

    1. Re: [WIMILWAU] "family recipes"
    2. Here's my thought on memories.... My grandmother made the most wonderful Chili when I was a child.... She never wrote anything down..... When I grew up I still remembered her Chili......none I ever ate tasted like hers..... So I started my quest to make one like hers...... Each time I made chili I wrote down how I did it..... It took 5 years and I finally hit on the taste that I remembered so well....... I'm presently making up a cookbook and copies to give to my friends to pass on my family recipes, ones that we call tried & true..... I am not going to let all these wonderful recipes be lost forever when I die!!! Just thought I'd pass this on so maybe someone else may not have their families recipes lost forever!!!
