Penny, The only Milwaukee Avenue I ever heard of and traveled in Wauwatosa was an extension of Vliet St, running from 76th Street to 83 St. I just never heard of it being called East Milwaukee Ave. So - I went to the maps I have - Milwaukeee Avenue but no East there either. I then went down and got the street index from the Milwaukee Map Service, Inc. It covers both Milwaukee and Waukesha Counties. No East Milwaukee Ave. listed anywhere in either of the counties. Somewhere down the line, I believe somebody must have added the East accidentally. But - I don't have any old maps so I cannot say for sure. Bob of Brookfield
Hi Myra, I am out tonight....so I will do the look-up this weekend. I have not been able to locate the address of Ferdinand Hintz, my 2x great uncle, on Yahoo maps, etc. The address is 199 E. Milwaukee Avenue, Wauwatosa -- the year was 1931. Any ideas of the cross street? Thanks. Penny Ziemer Ford Denver
HINTZ - Ferdinand J., beloved father of Ella Wieben, Norma Carlton, Walter P., Alfred F., and Fred P. Hintz, Monday, May 18 [1931] at the residence, 199 E. Milwaukee Av, Wauwatosa, aged 64 years, Services Thursday, May 21, at 2 p.m., at St. Paul's Evangelical church, 6th Av. near Milwaukee Av. Wauwatosa. Interment Pinelawn Cemetery. Remains can be viewed Wednesday pm and Thursday until 10 a.m. at the home of Charles Gerber & Son, We. Junea Av. at N. 13th Street and at the church from Thursday at 11 a.m. until the hour of service.
The cemetery east of Moorland Rd. is in New Berlin, Waukesha County and is named Highland. Yes, Union is on Teutonia Av. but as I have stated on this message board before, no records there any longer. They are now all at Graceland Cemetery on N. 43rd st. the same with Calvary, the large Roman Catholic Cemetery - no records there. All now to be found at Holy Cross Cemetery on Nash St. Wisconsin Memorial Park is in Brookfield, Waukesha County.
Thanks so much for the offer of a look-up. I am looking for the name Heyse and Dummer. Reinhold Dummer m. Emilie Heyse before 1883. Both families were in Milwaukee City. I am especially interested to see if there are any Heyses living close to the Dummers, as I have no information on that family other than a picture of Emilie Heyse, my g-g-grandmother. I greatly appreciate any efforts on my behalf. Myra Christeck
John, A while back on this list someone wrote that the Milwaukee Catholic Diocese was very helpful with information. You might try them. In the book I have "The History of Milwaukee, Wisconsin 1881" by Andreas I find the following on page 907, Volume II: "ST. JOSEPH'S CATHOLIC CHURCH Corner of Eleventh and Cherry streets. This congregation wAs organized in the year 1855 by the Rev. H.J. Holzhauer, and was composed of about fifty families, the great majority of them belonging to the laboring classes. A small frame church was erected the same year, and consecrated on the 5th of June by the Right Rev. Archbishop Henni. In connection with the Church a school had been started, and this building was also used for school purposes. By the next year the increasing numbers of the congregation made it plainly evident that a larger church would soon be needed, and one the eighteenth day of May, 1856, the corner-stone of the present edifice was laid at the corner of Eleventh and Cherry streets, with imposing ceremonies, by Archbishop Henni, the exercises being witnessed by nearly 8,000 persons. On the 16th of November, the same year, the church was consecrated. The parish grew rapidly from year to year, and in 1860 the congregation numbered over three hundred families. By the year 1867 this number was increased to between seven and eight hundred. The founding of the St. Francis parish, in the Sixth Ward, somewhat depleted the size of St. Joseph's congregation, as a part of this parish was added to St. Francis. The erection of Holy Cross church, near Calvary cemetery, in 1879, also withdrew about thirty families. At the present time, St. Joseph's congregation consists of between five hundred and six hundred families. In the year 1875, the new school building was erected at a cost of $27,000, giving to this parish one of the largest buildings of its kind in the city. The number of scholars now in attendance is nearly eight hundred, requiring the services of two male teachers and six Sisters of Notre Dame. Father Holzhauer, the first pastor, still continues to act as the spriritual guide to the congregation, having been in position to watch the growth of the small seed into a tree, whose arms afford loving shelter to the above numberous congregation." ..................it goes on to tell about the benevolent societies connected with the church. >Greetings >I am doing research on St. Joseph's Catholic church >It was located on West Cherry and North 11th streets. hi Cheryl and others, I can probably jot down the cemeteries that have records on microfilm at the libraries if this would help anyone. Perhaps we can then post all these results to the board in some form. Also, Wanderers Rest is now called Lincoln Memorial (this is across the street from Holy Cross Cemetery). Also, there is a Jewish cemetery behind Calvary (right next to freeway and Calvary - across the freeway is Woods). I went past there recently but I can't recall the names but all the stones were in hebrew. Also, Wisconsin Memorial is on the border between Milw and Waukesha County. Many folks from Wauwatosa are buried there. Didn't know if you wanted to consider that one also. Dear Cheryl, Creating a list of Milwaukee cemeteries is a great idea, thank you for thinking of it. May I add the cemetery located on Greenfield ave. east of Moorland Rd. I cant remember the name of it, but there are Milwaukee people buried there. If I may make a correction, Union cemetery should be located on north Teutonia ave. Greetings I am doing research on St. Joseph's Catholic church It was located on West Cherry and North 11th streets. This church also had an orphanage and school. It was built in 1885. Question what month and date for 1885 was the church built? It was torn down for the freeway that now goes through Milwaukee. The year was 1964, question what month and date in 1964 was it torn down? Was there a 50 (1935) and 75 (1960) year anniversary event? Any help you can give me would be most appreciated. Many thanks John
Hi William who ever stated it is not safe there, should check again-granted at nighttime it is probably more dangerous to walk through the cemetary, but during the day time it is not as dangerous as any other part of the city.I was a Milw Police Officer for 29 yrs worked in the district that union cemetay is and as far as I was concerned it was ok during the day gordon William Haines wrote: > Dear Bob from Brookfield, > I am sorry to hear that it is not safe to visit Union Cemetery, because I have ancestors buried there. Thanks for your thoughts. Didn't get to go today though because the office at Graceland, where the records are kept, did not get the locations and maps ready as they more or less promised. So, it will have to be next week instead as I am really tied up the rest of this week. Decided to just sit back and take a day off instead. Thanks again for the note and the concern. Personally, I think you deserve a little rest on this holiday! You give so much to others-it might be nice to 'recharge' your batteries, so to say. I hope you and everyone enjoy our '4th of July'! Thanks so much Bob!! I hope you've had a restful day. Yes, I would like to take you up on your offer to look up names at Forest Lawn, whenever you have time, no hurry!! I called all cemetaries you gave me the numbers for with no luck in finding my g-grandparents. The only place I do not know about yet is Union Cemetary, the gal on the phone did not have time to look for the records. The people I am looking for are as follows: Wilhelm or Emma Streese, born in Wisconsin and Germany respectively, but gave birth to Edna in Wisconsin in 1894. Their names are not listed on the marriage certificate(of Edna and Rudolf Leffmann) in 1915, and family rememberance is that she was orphaned, (early age??). The address she was living at in 1915 was the Deaconess House, on 290-23rd St. Mary has kindly suggested to me that this may have been an orphanage which would also make sense since they attended the Lutheran church. I am going to try to contact Mt Sinai hospital to search for records and the Probate court. Do you have any other suggestions as to who to contact?? Anyway, you don;t need all that, all I'm saying is that I don't have any record of when the parents died, but I imagine early on. . . I have not come across any death records yet that I can verify. The name could also have been spelled Strese or Stresse, but Streese is the correct spelling. Since I think you said you were going to Graceland next week, if you happen to ask about a lookup for the Union records there, that would be great!! Otherwise she said I could send a letter. . !! I hope I'm not asking too much. . .??!! Thanks again. Pam in CA at 106 degrees!! ______________________________________________________ "Changing the World, One Book at a Time. . . .
