Christy, Thanks. He's my aunt-in-law's brother and they never reimburse me for anything. I don't want to spend money on him, just was hoping to know what had happened to his children and grandchildren. The family had lost touch, actually, totally. Perhaps the public library. A phone call would be cheaper than the Journal. Why don't newspapers share? The good will would generate more traffic at least. Some newspapers I've tried to access only allow readers to obtain obits for a week after publication. After that, it has to be paid for. Very annoying to me, at least. Thanks for writing, Ashley Robert W Cole wrote: > Ashley: > > The only way you will be able to find your obit for Matt Schaeffer is to > contact the Journal Sentinel via email. Hi Ashley: The libraries in Milwaukee County were totally useless for me but you may have better luck. My ancestor settled in Milwaukee County in 1842 and not even the historical/genealogical societies have anything on him! I searched everywhere and the only source that had anything on my Henry Lieber was the Sentinel. They sent me 2 obits on him and one other article. I was at least able to find out that he was survived by his wife and nine children and where he actually died. I agree with you - only I think that if you can prove your direct relationship, you shouldn't have to pay for the death cert. Good Luck to you! I can look up the obituary for you if you can wait a couple weeks. Milwaukee Central Library has the Journal/Sentinel on microfilm and I'll try to get down there by August 1. Contact me privately if you'd like me to mail you a printout, otherwise I'll transcribe and post to the list. To everyone that has responded about the Town of Lake. Thank you for all the information. I'll pass this on to the Register of Deeds. You people are wonderful. There's an 1895 map of Milwaukee County online that shows Lake as west of St. Francis and Cudahy. http://www.livgenmi.com/milwaukeeWI.htm In any event, Town of Lake was definitely in Milwaukee County and that's where the records should be found. --- PJMARSOLEK@aol.com wrote: > Hi, > > The Town of Lake is now St. Francis and part of the > City of Milwaukee known > as Bay View, all in Milwaukee County. Is ANYONE researching the above surnames? If so, please contact me. I am especially interested in the LEIBER name of Greenfield, Hales Corner and Franklin in Milwaukee County. Thank you!
I can't access the Journal-Sentinel obituary for Matt SCHAEFFER, 11 September 1907 to 12 November 1997, Milwaukee, SSDI number 384-18-4791. Can anyone help with an obit lookup? Thanks for your help. Ashley
Ashley: The only way you will be able to find your obit for Matt Schaeffer is to contact the Journal Sentinel via email. They have their own archives dept. and do the lookups themselves - for a fee. I found the Sentinel on the web and called them but they also have a form that you can fill out on their site. I believe the cost is $5.00 per article/obit. Lon: Try Gartzr@aol.com. I posted a query re my Lieber family at Forest Home and Bob was absolutely the best contact I have had yet! He sent me pictures, dates, etc, of the family plot. If it were not for Bob, I would never have found my Lieber family. Good Luck!! He is the BEST. Will check it out on Friday on my day of volunteering at Forest Home Cemetery Bob of Brookfield
Hi! I recently joined this listserv and was hoping to locate any descendents of my great-great grandparents who settled in Milwaukee County. Casper (b. 1821, d. 1891) and Magdalena (b. 1829, d. 1907) lived in Oak Creek and Lake (now Cudahy), Wisconsin. They were married in Milwaukee County in 1846 and had 11 children: Joseph, Louis, Mary, Frank, Barney (my great-grandfather), Margaret, Rosa, Lina (or Lena), William and twins, John and Jane. Casper was a farmer. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who might be related to these Fischer's. Thanks! Just to add to your post, there was a small school that was a town of lake school on the corner of 13th & Layton Avenue. I believe they have built a Muslim temple there now. My husband showed me a cute cartoon in the comic section of the Milwaukee Journal. It is called "Pickles" and is a "genealogy" cartoon. Lenora from Wisconsin
Hi, The Town of Lake is now St. Francis and part of the City of Milwaukee known as Bay View, all in Milwaukee County. Cudahy was never part of the Town of Lake. On the corner of 6th St. and Howard Ave is a large water tower and I believe that above the door is engraved, Town of Lake. That means that the Town of Lake went from Lake Michigan, through St. Francis and to at least 6th St. I don't believe it went any farther west. There are still some sidewalks in St. Francis with the Town of Lake stamp on them. And I'm not positive on this but I believe that the City of St. Francis was incorporated in the early 1950s, thus erasing the Town of Lake. By the way, that water tower is across the street from St. Adalbert's Cemetery. I believe some members of this list are looking for or have ancestors buried there. Hope this helps, Paula In a message dated 7/15/01 3:03:31 PM Central Daylight Time, WIMILWAU-D-request@rootsweb.com writes: << << I'm not sure if Town of Lake became Cudahy or became part of Cudahy or what happened, but it was definitely part of Milwaukee County and parts of it were in Cudahy in the early 1900's. >> Thanks, Cheryl. Wondering if anyone could look up either (or both) phone directory listings for the names Judell or Streese, for current listings or also in the 1915 time era. .. . or the Streese name from 1894, if there is such a listing available,. .. thanks so much!! Two questions: 1. Looking for others who are willing to do 1880 census lookups; and wondering if I can pass on your name to a couple of people in England searching for names here in US. .. . My lookup request would be: National Index list for the surname Leffmann(or without 2 F's) and for and individual name of Adolph Judell, listed on National Index as 1840, GERM MO 2. Now what is the scoop on the 1890 census, I understand it is not indexed the same way, so do I need to pursue state by state records/library search or are there lookups and what information is needed??
