    2. As I just wrote to Pam I thought I should let everyone know. I have a 1971 listing of all Lutheran Church in the year, 1971, with their addresses, the county in which located and the zip code at that time. If anyone would like a lookup, please let me know and I would be happy to help. It also includes English Speaking Lutheran Church of Argentina, Australia, The Bahamas, Bolivia, Brazil, Ceylon, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Denmark, Eduador, El Salvador, England, Ethiopia, Finland, France, Germany, Ghana, Guam, Guatemala, Goyana, Honduras, Hong Kong, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Korea, Lebanon, Liberia, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Norway, Okinawa, Pakistan East, Panama Canal Zone, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Scotland, Singapore, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwon (Formosa), Tanzania, Thailand, Uruguay, Venezuela, Virgin Islands, Wake Island, Wales & West Indies. (and, of course, every state in good old USofA) This was published by the Aid Association For Lutheran Insurance Company of my home town of Appleton, Wisconsin, just recently merged with The Lutheran Brotherhood Insurance Co. of Minneapolis, Minnesota. It was sent to all of us who were in the ministry in 1971, but was the only one I ever received so don't know if it was printed prior to that year or after. I was in the active ministry from 1957 until 1986 and never received another updated copy. Bob of Brookfield

ZIPFEL at 1315 Cherry St. <see: http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/inddbs/4749.htm>. But I now think I subsequently neglected to mention that, about a month ago, when I was reviewing some early Milwaukee directories at the main Milwaukee Public Library, I noticed that Kasimir Zipfel also began to be listed in these directories beginning about 1868-- and at the same 1315 Cherry St. address. In the late 1860s Kasimir was apparently the only ZIPFEL listed in these directories. Cherry Street addresses may not have changed much since the Civil War. But 1315 Cherry in the old 9th Ward, densely populated (mostly German?) even in the 1850s, might now be 1315 West Cherry St.-- in the very unlikely event that this Zipfel home still exists. 3. I have hired a German researcher who is very reliable and her fees are reasonable. She has helped find my family and while most searches, she tells me, don't take so long, my surname was quite common at the time; therefore, she is still doing research for me. It's still cheaper than making a trip over there, hire someone to help locate the records and get interpretation. She has access to records more freely because she is an experienced researcher and is known at the Archives. While some of what she has found has also been found in the films of LDS, in many cases, the copies were better and she could interpret the information, besides being able to verify our records were that of our family. If you would like additional information, please contact me off list. Linda McGoey tlmcgoey@athenet.net ----- Original Message ----- From: Pamela J. 3. Due to the address changes in the past, I have a question regarding verifying the name of the church at the NW Corner of Concordia and 2nd St. in 1915, 1 block east of Concordia(208 or 308 Concordia?). I've reached 3 different Lutheran synods and they really weren't sure. . .they did however give me an address of an "Epiphany" church, now called "All People's Church", at 2600 N. 2nd St., which I'm wondering if is similar to the name of "Euphrata" church that was given to me earlier on in my searching. ..I was told that the Concordia location would be nearer to 3200 block of N. 2nd; would this be correct information, is this a close location?? Or should I try to pursue other avenues?? I was also given the name of an archivist for the Evangelical Lutheran group, which had the Epiphany Church, a Bob Wierderanders, of Wortburg Seminary. I have not yet connected with him; does anyone know him?? Thanks for any direction you can give.. . ! Pam ______________________________________________________ > >

    3. Indirectly(not really) Milwaukee question: Since there are so many German families in the Milwaukee area, I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with using/hiring professional/private researchers in Germany to get information(e.g. birth records and such); I realize that the quality probably varies from person to person and area to area; but how does one know if ones that are advertised are reputable?? Is there a professional organization that provides guidance and/or information regarding quality? And has anyone had problems getting information from Germany from another researcher due to their privacy laws?? Thanks for any info you might have!! 2. Hello list. I recently ordered the Milwaukee County probate index through my local family history center. The Graesing family that I am looking up was noted several times. Caroline Graesing filed a Certificate of survivorship 6/16/1919. Her husband Ferdinand is listed on file as of 5/13/1919. I assume that one file must have opened at Ferdinand date of death and the second when Caroline submitted her paper work? How do I go about getting copies of these files and what is the cost involved? Thank you in advance for the expertise of many on this list. Bob Grasing

Marquette University will publish documents and images on the web at:http://134.48.55.172:8000/cuap/index.shtml They are requesting information and memoirs from people who grew up in Milwaukee. As this site gets developed it should be a rich source of information for family historians to use to give background to the names and dates that we collect. Hope someone will find this helpful. 2. Good Anne, We have a Robert B. Lindsay buried at Forest Home Cemetery. He was born on July 11, 1896 and died on December 15, 1986. Believe this matches yours. He is buried in a section of the cemetery with many, many other Lindsay's. Here are those he is buried with: GEORGE I. AMELIA S. RUTH M. HENRY D. RICHARD M. JONES DORIS LINDSAY JONES RICHARD OWEN JONES EDNA ROWLEY WILLIAM D. RUSSELL G. RUSSELL G., JR MILDRED B. GEORGE W. KATHARINE CLEMENT LINDSAY JACKSON C. RUTH KATHARINE LIPPITT FRANK L. POLLOCK MARGARET B. LINDSAY POLLOCK GEORGE W. POLLOCK FRANK H. JANET POLLOCK GEORGE WILLIAM POLLOCK MARY K. The above, of course, are all Lindsay's unless a different surname is given. Should you want any additional information that I might be able to find about Robert and/or any of the others, please let me know. A cemetery, though, really does not have that much information although we at Forest Home has more than a lot of others here in Milwaukee. We have most life-time dates, location (Lot, Block, Section), city or country of birth, last residence, funeral home and with older burials many causes of deeath plus purchaser of lot, date purchased, present lot representative if family appointed one by notarized affidavit, and date of burial. Hope this has helped you. Bob of Brookfield (Volunteer Friend of Forest Home Cemetery of Milwaukee, Wis.)

Thanks also to the related on-list contributions of Mary Popovich and others last week-- plus some important off-list info I've recently received from another Mary---> at tepalmer@execpc.com And, in an off-list 8/23/01 note to me, Maxine Capezza kindly pointed out the very helpful article on the Milwaukee Orphan Asylum that appears on page 990 of A. T. Andreas' 1881 HISTORY OF MILWAUKEE (Western Historical Publishing Co.). I just noticed this note of Maxine, and I'll soon thank her for this privately. But FIRST I want to point out to Bob that Maxine's note included an attached JPG image of the first page of this 1881 Western Historical article on the Milwaukee Orphan Asylum-- and this text is identical to the article that you quoted earlier today-- apparently in its entirety. So it looks like we now know the source of your quote-- to which historians Bruce and Gregory may also have referred. I also especially want to point out this now: the likely reason that the St. Aemilian (or "St. Aemilianus") Orphan Asylum, a Catholic organization founded ca. 1854, does not appear in the 1889 and 1890 Milwaukee directories (below) is that it was NOT then in Milwaukee. Apparently it was still located (to the south) in the Milwaukee suburb of St. Francis-- and apparently close to the old Franciscan Seminary there. Mary <at tepalmer@execpc.com> kindly told me about this. It appears to me that St. Aemilian's is a spin-off what became its female counterpart: St. Rose (founded ca. 1852?). Apparently St. Aemilian's absorbed the Milwaukee Orphan Asylum several decades ago. And I'm intrigued that apparently two of the three oldest Milwaukee-area orphanages still seem to survive in some form: St. Aemilian's and St. Rose's. I haven't yet contacted either of these organizations-- but Switchboard.com says that St. Aemilian-Lakeside Inc. is at 8901 W. Capitol Dr., Milwaukee, WI 53222 (phone: 414-463-1880) -- and St. Rose appears to be nearby on the same campus. Page 990 in the 1881 Milwaukee history is significant to me and my family because it confirms that my g-g-grandmother Mrs. Elisha Eldred (1802-1879) and one of her in-laws, Mrs. Eliza LaDue, were among the founders of the Milwaukee Orphan Asylum in 1849-1850. But what's much more important is that all the above may lead us to archived records of many early Milwaukee orphans. Perhaps some nice lister-residents of metro Milwaukee could check out some of the above. Probably most of this could be done via local phone calls. ........John (in Chicago) ============================================================ << Subj: Re: [WIMilwau] St. Aemilians + Milwaukee Orphan Asylum Date: 8/23/01 2:28:10 AM Central Daylight Time From: busia@mindspring.com (Mary Popovich) Reply-to: WIMILWAU-L@rootsweb.com To: WIMILWAU-L@rootsweb.com .......Both St. Rose's and St. Aemillians's were likely staffed by Catholic nuns. Most Catholic religious orders have a member who serves as an archivist/historian for the order, and might be able to answer general questions about the founding and history of an orphanage. St. Joseph's orphanage in Milwaukee was staffed by Felician Sisters and St. Vincent's by the Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul (the ones who used to have the huge white headdresses). However, I don't know which order(s) staffed St. Rose and/or St. Aemillian. Anyone out there have further information? Perhaps someone located in Milwaukee could contact the Chancery Office, which could provide information on who ran the orphanages and the address(es) of the appropriate Motherhouse. If the Protestant Orphan Asylum was affiliated with the Episcopal Church in Milwaukee (or St. Paul's Parish [founded 1838] as someone noted), perhaps the Episcopal Chancery Office would have information in its records. 3. I'm looking for more information on a great-uncle, Robert Lindsay, who lived on Bradley Road, Milwaukee Town, Milwaukee County, WI in 1920. He was born in Scotland about 1896 and came to the US in 1913. He was a gardener on a private estate. At the time of the census he was living with his wife Margaret, also born in Scotland about 1894, no children. This may be the Robert Lindsay who died December 1986 in Milwaukee, as found in the Social Security Death Index. I'm especially interested in contacting any descendants, finding an obituary, etc. Somehow there's never been any information handed down in the family on this person...! Anne

    2. The following two detailed map URLs show Milwaukee's Pilgrims Rest Cemetery on the left-- plus the larger Forest Home Cemetery to the right-- along with the much smaller Greenwood Cemetery just south of Forest Home: topozone.com/map.asp?z=16&n=4760763&e=423098&s=25 terraserver.homeadvisor.msn.com/image.asp?s=11&t=2&x=1057&y=11902&z=16&w=2 [more detail] The U.S. Geological Survey map info at these two sites appears to date entirely to 1971, giving it some historic interest. And the old main (north) entrance to Forest Home was recently blocked off-- and moved westward to about midway on Forest Home Ave. between Lincoln and 27th. Pilgrims Rest is bounded by Forest Home Ave. on the south, 31st & 33rd on the east and west, and Hayes Ave. on the north. The zoomed-up TerraServer map more clearly shows the especially dramatic topography of Forest Home-- which makes it, I feel, one of the most beautiful Midwest cemeteries. This landscape, including several tiny probable kettle lakes, was apparently formed over ten thousand years ago at the end of the last Ice Age. Bob tells me that there have been minimal subsequent human adjustments to the Forest Home topography. Ashley has already pointed out the TopoZone and TerraServer websites below.
