    3. Ashely, This photo/image site is great. Put in MILWAUKEE and get over 15,000 images. You can narrow it down within that subject...genealogy, photos, etc. It's great. Thanks a lot. Also, it shows where the photo/image came from so you can go to that site and search more. There are maps there also. Pray for Peace, Maxine Capezza

    3. A friend sent me this address for the Graphic Information Systems day to be held at UWM on November 14. GIS is the sort of map Hamtrack uses when it maps the geographic distribution of surnames on the census. The kind of thing that when you type in "Kauzlaric", more of them ( in a theoretical example ) live in Illinois than any other state and the next screen brings up the USA map with states shaded by how many of the Kauzlaric surname live there. I find geopolitical genealogy interesting and also appreciate the price on this workshop. 1. [WiMilwau] Majic family and Ljubojevic
    2. Ashley Tiwara
    3. While looking up my aunt's family, SAFER/ SEFER/ SCHEFA/ SCHAEFFER, at Ellis Island, I ran across some names in the manifest I recall vaguely someone on this list looking for. Anyone interested in Joseph MAJIC, possibly MAGIC or MAYIC in the USA? Joseph arrived on April 13, 1907, via the SS. Potsdam, from Zakovac, maybe Zvehovac, Croatia, headed for his cousin Petar Ljubojevic in Stambough, Michigan. A few lines further down, another LJUBOJEVIC was headed fro Brazil, Iowa, to visit his brother Pete. One cannot not wonder if these Ljubojevic names are connected, also. Hoping the Majic family sees this and recognizes the names, Ashley

    1. [WiMilwau] Spehar, Schefa, Schaeffer, Naleish, Raith in Milwaukee
    2. Ashley Tiwara
    3. I'm hoping for some help from anyone recognizing these names: SPEHAR, SCHEFA, SCHAEFFER, NALEISH, RAITH, all from 1907 in Milwaukee. Does anyone reading this have a city directory for the approximate year, maybe even 1910 in the city of Milwaukee? Could you do a lookup? I've been trying to find information on my aunt's parents, not that she'd ever thank me. When I do turn up a tidbit, she always seems very interested, but never remembers what I've shown her, and her kids, my cousins, mostly only want to know about the blond side of the family. Croatia is so far away and everyone there has dark hair and swarthy skin, almost as though they're gypsies. Could anything be worse? Ah, well, some of aunt's cousins ARE interested and have been quite helpful. In the interests of pure research then, I've tried to find my aunt's father at Ellis Island. The index has been touchy sometimes when I do searches, and previously I had > not turned him up. Tonight I found him as Mato SCHEFA of Novaki, Croatia ( > near Virovitica ), possibly > traveling with Franjo and Rosalia NALEISH, NALEUH of Novaki, both the couple > and he going to Milwaukee. This may be a name connected with Michael SCHAEFER of the former bakery on 35th Street, originating in the same part of Croatia, but if so the two families have lost the connection. Can you help put the links together? > > > Half excitedly, > Ashley

    2. Ashley Tiwara
    3. Sorry to be belatedly putting in 2 cents but I have not dealt well with the mail this week and am just now working on Monday. One of the things which has always amused me, given the unionized teamsters' reputation in the 60's especially, is that the name changed, sometime in the early 1800's to mid century. At one time, team drivers were called teamers. Lots and lots of women worked in the field. They were at first called teamsters, and later called teamstresses. The men working in the field thus became the teamsters, one of the few occupations today that is largely male but has a feminine form on the occupational title. Shortly to be caught up with mail, Ashley Laurel Campbell wrote: ( edited ) Does anyone on the list > know of any clubs/organizations that teamsters belonged to? 2. I was having the same problem, too. I like using my Microsoft Streets & Trips 2001 software for searching cities, etc, but it is impossible using current maps with old street information. I understand that the City of Milwaukee changed their street numbering system and names during the 1930's. Here is a web site that may help you: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wimilwau/1870Ward.htm.

    3. Contact the Milwaukee Historical Society. Their website is: http://www.milwaukeecountyhistsoc.org/ They have a conversion book, as does the Public Library (Downtown), come to think of it. They may not be able to help you right away, but will get back to you, and are always so helpful. Good luck! My great great grandfather owned a tavern at 1575 Teutonia. With the current street numbering, there is no such address. Teutonia is currently numbered as a North-South Street. I'm guessing that it was once numbered as an East West street, and 1575 would be somewhere roughly between where 15th and 16th hit Teutonia. But I'd like to see if the building is still standing and for that, I need an exact address. 2. I don't know if this is applicable, but my hometown, Peoria, IL, underwent a re-numbering back in 1956. FORTUNATELY, the City Engineer put together a book which can be found in the main library in Peoria which gives the old address and then the new address for houses/buildings in existence at the time.. Perhaps you can inquire in the library and see if someone has put together such a book for the city of interest to you. Bill in Denver

    3. The 1910 City Directory had a street listing with an outline of numbering. I photocopied this and use it for address conversions. This directory lists the address 1539 Teutonia Avenue at the corner of Keefe Avenue, so your 1575 address would have been just beyond Keefe. The directory doesn't list any other cross streets for Teutonia beyond Keefe. Mary Popovich
