    3. Seeking contact with anyone who may be researching: LINGER/LENGER ENGLELS/ANGLES lines which may have settled in the "Engelsberg/West Granville" area in the 1840's=1850's. (This is now around the Appleton Avenue area--where a mission Church, St. Martin's used to be--about 2 blocks from the present site of Timmerman Field). I found a child: Arthur Christian George LINGER, born in Milwaukee on January 2, 1895 to Dr. Joseph LINGER and the mother registered as Anna ANGELS. 2. Dr. Andrew Petta
    3. Does anyone know what Elm Street name was changed to in Milwaukee? I had ancestors who lived at 2442 Elm Street...it is my understanding that this home was located where one of the current freeways is now. This was a Lutheran Family--what would have been the closest Lutheran Church to this area in1900-1919 time frame? Thank you in advance, Susan apetta@netwurx.net

    3. Hi Maxine, The basic virus that is causing a problem right now is called Badtrans B. However, someone on this list said they got Hybris yesterday and I got one this morning. Hybris could be coming from anywhere, and its been around a long time. It used to be called Loveletter or something. When you say that the attachment opened right up, that is caused by a defect in the Outlook Express email program that comes with many new computers. People using OE are supposed to get a patch to fix that but lots haven't. You use Eudora and I use Pegasus and it wouldn't pop right open on us. I have posted a couple of times today and yesterday and haven't received a virus in reply. If there is an infected computer on this list, then when they turn it on, you and I will be getting a virus. Then we can write them......but for now it looks like everyone is ok. Bob On 1 Dec 2001, at 18:21 Joseph J & Maxine M. 2. Robert W Fay
    3. Hi Maxine, Yes, there is. And to try to make it convenient for everyone I have posted the archives url on the page with the subsciption info, which is now printed on the bottom of every list post. (Yes, I noticed there was an error on the url and corrected it this morning) This is the url at the bottom of the page and you'll find the archives url toward the bottom http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sewis/wimilwau.htm Or you can go to the archives directly at http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=WIMILWAU A note on the archives. Rootsweb has had the so called I Search archives for a long time and they work correctly. More recently, Rootsweb developed the Threaded Archive search. It is presently off line and has been for several months due to a bad server. There seems to be no firm date for getting it back online. Getting back to the virus problem, if anyone ever is concerned that their computer is infected, there is an online virus scanner that is pretty well regarded at http://housecall.antivirus.com/ There are message boards for virus questions at http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&group=alt.comp.anti-virus http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&group=alt.comp.virus http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&group=comp.virus Those are hooked in with USENET so it is often unmoderated. There is also a free firewall program at http://www.zonelabs.com/index.html Bob Fay On 2 Dec 2001, at 9:54 Joseph J & Maxine M. 1. [WiMilwau] ATTENTION: @home customers
    2. Robert W Fay
    3. Hi folks, For those of you that have @home for an isp, please note that a lot of the @home services are shutting down/denying service and the reports are that it is state by state. Supposedly some will stay online, others will deny service till the current problems are resolved. I have no inside information on this situation, but it is getting to be a pretty massive problem. If your isp shuts down, then email to your email address will start to bounce (It gets returned to me) Rootswebs computers automatically monitor the number of times that each email address bounces and for this list, when it bounces 16 times, the address will be automatically unsubscribed. There's nothing I can do to stop that. If that happens to you, please resubscribe to this list at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sewis/wimilwau.htm Thanks, Bob Fay

BadTrans can infect if you read e-mail with Outlook and the message is simply previewed. You don't have to open it (in its own window) or open the attachment. This is an old exploit; many people have not upgraded or patched their Outlook to prevent it. - John

    3. Hi folks, As everyone must know by now there is a virus problem going around called Badtrans B. You can look at the viruseye page and learn that it is already the third worst computer virus ever and a few other interesting things. http://www.messagelabs.com/viruseye/ On the one hand, I can and will encourage everyone to take appropriate precautions. But on the other hand, remember we went through Badtrans A last spring and the only list mail that I remember about it was a warning I posted. We really had few problems and I think I only temporarily unsubbed one or two people. So its not the end of the world by any means. The other day I encouraged folks that wanted more info on viruses and precautions to subscribe to the virus list at http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Internet_Help/ and still believe that is the most appropriate forum. However, it is so busy right now (300-600 posts a day) and there are a few on that list posting misleading info that it really is not a good forum right now. So since viruses are usually off topic for genealogy list but given the situation on the virus list and the fact that the members of this list have always shown good judgement on postings, I'm not going to complain about virus posts being off topic if the list members feel it is important. There is a bit of a false rumor that this virus inspires and that is that subscribers receive the virus from the list at Rootsweb. Rootsweb does not have the ability to email attachments or html (fancy) email. That prevents Rootsweb from emailing a virus or any type of attachment. However, a computer that is infected with the Badtrans virus will automatically and without the knowledge of the computer owner, reply to any email it receives by sending back an email with a virus. So if you post to the list with a subject line [WiMilwau]"Joe Smith", and someone else has an infected computer, it will respond with a message subject line "Re:[WiMilwau] Joe Smith" It will be about 40k in size. It is very deceiving and very effective in that regard. That is why I feel with this virus only, it is necessary to unsub infected computers. A note on that as well: It appears that I can change infected computers over to the digest form of this list temporarily rather than unsubbing. The address is a bit different and the virus will respond by replying to the list address which will bounce to me. I have mountains of antivirus protection it is a trivial concern then. The folks most vulnerable to this virus use MS Outlook, and Outlook Express Email, Windows operating systems, Internet Explorer browsers, lack or haven't updated their antivirus within the last week, lack a firewall, and lack a virus filtered ISP. Hopefully I covered most of the points and we can go on, but ask questions if there are any. Everytime there is a significant virus it is kind of a learning process. 3. Bob: FYI - this is a short version of what is going around on the other mailing lists: 1: A new email virus called _BadTrans_ is spreading quickly through the net. People should visit the following links: http://vil.nai.com/vil/virusSummary.asp?virus_k=99069 ... for complete details of the virus. And http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/ bulletin/MS01-020.asp ... where you will find a patch from Microsoft that will help prevent some forms of infection by this and other verii like it. 2. Dealing with the effects of this virus. Although your own computer may not be infected with this virus, someone you know might be. One of the behaviors of this virus is to automatically send out numerous copies of itself to people in the victims address book. This has the unfortunate effect of filling up ones mailbox and when this occurs, the users ISP server starts "bouncing" messages back to Rootsweb. After five bounces, the Rootsweb software automatically unsubscribes you from the Mailing List and you have to re-subscribe (after you've emptied your message box at your ISP server). -----Original Message----- From: Gartzr@aol.com <Gartzr@aol.com> To: WIMILWAU-L@rootsweb.com <WIMILWAU-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Saturday, December 01, 2001 7:12 PM Subject: Re: [WiMilwau] VIRUS >From what I read, probably not but it sounds like it will go out to all the people you have received e-mails from but have not read as of yet.
