I recently sent for the Civil War Record of my Great-Grandfather Frederick Kufahl. In a sworn statement given by Frederick at the time of appling for a Civil War Pension he states that all birth certificates and other Possesions for the Kufahl family were lost in a fire on the train in Buffalo, New York as they came cross country from New York City to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1852. Carol from Long Island, New York
Colleen, etc., from John (in Chicago)-- I haven't studied this recently, but I feel fairly sure there were no railroads in Wisconsin nor northern Illinois until about 1849-1850. The 1855 completion of what became the NorthWestern line between Chicago, Waukegan, Kenosha, Racine, and Milwaukee did, however, open up a continuous railroad link between New York City (via Albany, NY) and Milwaukee, WI. I just took a quick look at Darci's migration website that Bob Fay kindly pointed out today in a GenWisconsin-L@rootsweb.com posting. Looks like there's some good stuff here at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~darci/index2.htm#three One migration example of the 1840s relates to my own ancestor Jonathan Magie (1823-1901), who arrived in Milwaukee from Elizabeth, NJ, in early 1848, via the seemingly very circuitous route summarized below. Had he not planned an intermediate stop in Cincinnati, my guess is that he might have traveled more directly between Buffalo and Milwaukee by Great Lakes ship. But possibly the cold weather at the north end of Lake Michigan in early 1848 may also have discouraged him from following this particular route. Instead, a 1901 letter of his (I have this) indicates that he traveled from NJ to Albany (NY) by Hudson River boat, from Albany to Buffalo via a series of different railroads, from Buffalo to Toledo via Lake Erie ship, and then from Toledo to Cincinnati via the Miami & Erie Canal (opened in 1845). After visiting relatives in Cincinnati, he then traveled by steamboat via the Ohio, Mississippi, and Illinois rivers to La Salle, IL. But note that prior to 1845 a traveler could also take an older Ohio canal that linked Lake Erie and the Ohio River-- the 1832 Ohio & Erie Canal that headed south from Cleveland. The Illinois & Michigan Canal, linking La Salle and Chicago, was opened in late April of 1848. This was a very primitive canal, portions of which still exist. But its 1848 completion also led directly to Chicago's emergence as a major world transportation hub. In any case, Jonathan appears to have been one of the very first people to arrive in Chicago via the new I & M Canal. A few days later, on May 1, 1848, he finally reached Milwaukee, probably arriving from Chicago by Lake Michigan ship. "When I left Cincinnati, peach trees were in bloom," Jonathan wrote from his Milwaukee home a few months before his death there on 30 Aug 1901. "When I struck this town I thought I had reached the Polar regions. When I got to the Hotel [probably Milwaukee's old US Hotel, destroyed by fire in 1855] there was a big box stove that had about a quarter of a cord of wood it, and the heat felt GOOD..... Uncle John [John Ogden, 1801-1891] came here in 1836 and he made the whole trip from New Jersey on horseback....." _______________________________________________________ << Subj: Re:1860 Migration Route Date: 12/8/01 10:46:07 AM Central Standard Time From: JQMagie To: GenWisconsin-L@rootsweb.com In 1860 New York City and Beloit and Janesville in Rock Co., WI, were completely linked by railroads. So my guess is that your ancestor just hopped on a train. .........John (in Chicago) >> ____________________ << << Subj: 1860 Migration Route Date: 12/8/01 10:21:45 AM Central Standard Time From: corrine@ez-net.com (Corrine Brown) To: GenWisconsin-L@rootsweb.com My ancestor was found in NY in the 1860 Census and by 1865 was found in Rock Co, WI. Hi Susan, Here are names you and I have in common so far: Viola Susan Gengler married Nicholas Thelen of Theimsville 1917, they had six children, Nick was the son of Peter and Maria [Mueller]Thelen. I have Clenentina Langer who married Paul Schmit, April 1871 at St. Catherine's Church, Granville, WI, Fr. August Durst officiating. Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Gengler would have been Adam and Maria [Kolbach] Gengler who lived in Granville, WI. Adam was the son of Adam and Katherine [Kaber] Gengler who immigrated in 1846 and I am directly descended from another son of theirs, Johann Gengler. Their Catholic Parish was St. Catherine's of Alexandria, Granville, WI. Here is a brief history of some rural Milwaukee Co. pioneer Catholic Churches that may be of help to those researching Catholic families: Part of St. Catherine's early records were lost in a fire. I have recreated some of the early records of marriages, births and deaths of my ancestors and their children in that parish. In St. Catherine's Church history it states that St. Anthony the Hermit Church was a small log church built in 1846 at the direction of Father Maria Anton Meyer to serve the need of widely scattered families. In August 1847 he left and Father Anton Urbanek succeeded him. Fr. Urbanek stayed until Jan 1850 when he moved to a place about three miles east called Engelsburg [West Granville], Milwaukee Co., WI, where he built a new church and school dedicated to St. Martin, Bishop and Confessor. On September 10, 1851, St. Martin's became a mission church of St. Anthony's, also at that time the new pastor, Father OberMueller, was also placed over St. James Catholic Church, Mequon, WI. Fr. OberMueller remained there until August 18, 1852. Father Bartoz then became priest and remained until July 30, 1854. He was succeeded by Father Weis. Fr. Weis was the founder of St. Catherine's, Granville, WI, he relinquished leadership of St. James but remained over St. Martin's. The corner stone for St. Catherine's Church was laid May 1859. St. Catherine's church was organized to serve the needs of immigrants from Luxembourg, Bavaria, and Rhineland who had settled in the area of the northern part of Milwaukee Co. and the southern part of Washington Co. Today the area is known as the Town of Granville, Milwaukee Co. and the Town of Mequon, Ozaukee Co. Before the founding of the parish the settlers had attended St. Martin's Church, Englesburg [West Granville] and St. Anthony's Menonomee [Fussville], but distance made it difficult for them to perform religious duties. Founding families of St. Catherine's Church, Granville were: George Batzler, Jacob Batzler, John Bausch, Nicholas Biever, Adam Deltgen, Peter Deltgen, John Diderrich, Jacob Ewen, Nicholas Froehlich, John Gengler, Nicholas Gengler, Paul Gengler, Elizabeth Gruenwald, Nicholas Guidinger, John Hinsaeuher, Ulrich Holzbuetel, John Jung, Peter Jung, John Karner, Peter Klehr, Peter Kohner, Anton Kueffner, Joseph Post, Nicholas Redlinger, Joseph Roskopf, Henry Schmit, Nicholas Schmit, John Schweitzer [Spelled Schwister on some census information], Peter Spartz, Nicholas Steinmetz, Nicholas Tohl, and Francis Uerlings. About half of those surnames appear at least 1-200 times in my database, I will do a look up on surnames if you provide full name and approximate date relating to the person. I also have a list of St. Catherine's priests 1853-1945 if you have an ancestor who was born, married or died as a member of St. Catherine's and you would like to know who the priest was at the time of your ancestors event. Cindy
Thanks so much for the offer. I am researching the DORFNER surname. Thanks again, Cheryl in CA
Cindy, I am related to a Detrich (?sp) line by way of a marriage of a Margaret LINGER/LENGER/LANGER. I am also related to a MICHEL(S), MICHAEL(S) line. George Michels (abt. 1809-1868) first purchased land in the Town of Belgium, which is about 8 miles north of Port Washington. He got the land through a land patent from the United States Bureau of Land Division. He and his wife Anna Maria (maiden name THELEN or THIELEN) later sold the land and purchased land in the Thiensville area. This was where EVA/AVAH was born September 09, 1847. George's daughter, Eva/Avah, married Dr. Christian LINGER. Dr. LINGER had a sister named Margaret ( who married a Dedarich/Detrich. She and her husband are baptismal sponsors for a child baptized at St. Anthony's in what was Fussville. Eva was born September 09, 1847 in Thiensville, Ozaukee Co., Wisconsin. Christian LINGER's father was Christian LENGER (January 10, 1810-February 25, 1896). Elizabeth Glesius/Klesius was the maiden name of Christian LENGER, Sr.'s wife October 28, 1814-February 07, 1891. I am searching for the death/marriage of Margaret LINGER/LENGER/LANGER--the daughter of Christian and Elizabeth--the sister of Christian LINGER, Jr. Below give the dates/land description... Copy of Deed to George Michels: Grantor: United States of America to Grantee: George Michels for $100.00 Dated July 15, 1846 Volume 6 page 133 The W 1/2 of the NE 1/4 of Section 7-12-22E--cont 80 + or hundredths acres at $1.25 per acre Receipt No 23,440 ============= Grantor: George Michels and Anna Marie his wife to Peter Becker on July 15,1846 The W 1/2 of the NE 1/4 of Section 7-12-22E cont 80 acres be the same more or less In my ggrandfather's funeral book there is a signature for : Mr. and Mrs. A. Hello, I am researching the Gengler line, as well as the Diderrich and Schmit lines. I am a direct descendent of Adam Gengler who immigrated here form Everlange, Luxembourg to the Granville/Brown Deer area in 1846. Which Gengler/Diderrich/Schmit doe you descend from? Cindy

old Grand Avenue, Milwaukee-- originally known as Spring Street-- renamed Grand Avenue in the 1870s and West Wisconsin Avenue in 1927. To Bob of Brookfield, etc.-- I got intrigued by your Kneeland family questions-- and (fortunately or unfortunately) the following has evolved into another one of my long-winded memos. I typed up the following to e-mail you off-list-- but I've concluded it had enough general interest to send to WiMilwau list as a whole. Hopefully I'm GIVING something for a change, rather than just RECEIVING (the former is reportedly more blessed). Hopefully also my present memo doesn't arrive with any horrible diseases, such as anthrax, small pox, badtrans B, leprosy, melissa, bubonic plague, hybris, etc. Yesterday, thanks be to God, Housecall.antivirus.com (surprisingly) certified me to be AS CLEAN AS A WHISTLE. Many thanks again, Bob, for all your wonderful lookups at Milwaukee's Forest Home Cemetery. And hopefully someone will find a few helpful odds & ends below. I've now looked at what online evidence I could quickly find, and I feel fairly certain that Moses Kneeland (b. 2 Apr 1809? in CT) and James Kneeland (b. 12 Feb 1816 in NY), both buried at Forest Home, are HALF BROTHERS, both children of David Kneeland Jr. (b. 23 Aug 1772 in CT)-- but by different mothers (see below). The 1840 Census seems to show both James and Moses living in rural Genesee County in western NY state-- only about 15 miles apart. And the 1850 Census locates James in Milwaukee's 3rd Ward (where my ancestor Elisha Eldred was then living at the NE corner of Jackson and Michigan), while Moses was located west of the Milwaukee River-- in Milwaukee's 4th Ward (where Elisha moved in 1859). Also, Moses' full brother Joel seems to have then been living close to Moses in 1850, while their older full brother Sylvester Kneeland remained in upstate NY. My copies of Henry F. Walling's valuable 1858 Milwaukee County landownership map (I printed these out from Library of Congress microfiche several years ago) shows much of the 4th Ward land to the southwest of St. James Episcopal Church, SW corner of 9th & Spring (now W. Wisconsin Ave.), was then owned by James Kneeland. The present St. James Church (stone) was begun in 1867, but I've read that the older adjoining frame church continued to be used as a parish house until the 1920s. My recollection is that a 1870s map also shows a large open area labeled "Kneeland's Park" on this James Kneeland property. My 1858 map copies also shows that a six city block area bounded by modern State & Wisconsin on the north & south, and 14th & 16th on the east & west, was then owned by Elisha (now mostly Marquette University land), and Elisha built his big new house at the south end of this rugged and heavily forested property in 1858-1859-- about halfway between modern Wisconsin & Wells. This home (I have an old antebellum photo of it) was occupied by the Levi J. Kellogg family beginning in 1867 and unfortunately demolished about 1900. Maybe you'll recognize some of the other KNEELANDs listed below, especially in Ancestry.com's online 1860 WI census. ........John (in Chicago) =================================================== http://familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp [IGI parent searches:] KNEELAND Father: David Kneeland [Jr.], Mother: Statira Williams Exact Spelling: Off Film Number: 456238 Results: International Genealogical Index/North America (7 matches) 1. I believe at least one of these CUDAHYs is buried in Wauwatosa. Are all three above buried there too-- and at what cemetery?? Also, where are Fred and Ernst MILLER buried? Was Fred the founder of Miller Brewing?? Also, I suspect Holy Trinity (adjoining St. Adalberts) is now Milwaukee's oldest Catholic cemetery. Is that correct? ** In 1867 Levi KELLOGG (1817-1873?, bur. Forest Home) + his wife Helen and growing family (at 493 Milwaukee) and JQM's widowed ancestor Mrs. Elisha ELDRED (at 1416 Spring [Grand Ave.] traded houses. Are the Kelloggs related to Louise Phelps Kellogg, 1861-1942 [FH 12-5-15], who is honored in Forest Home's Halls of History? *** Burdette J. JOHNSON, founder of what became the Palmolive Co., which (along with Armour & Co, meat packers) had early ties to Wadhams-Magie Oil Co., founded 1883, and later Magie Bros. Oil Co. (now a Franklin Park, IL, division of Conoco)-- founded 1888 and originally located in a building erected in 1888 and still standing at 56 Fifth St. (now 422 N. Fifth St.), Milwaukee. Also in 1888, Edward A. Wadhams (1846-1916--buried FH 106-0-35) founded Wadhams Oil (later absorbed by Mobil Oil), which later built some of the distinctive Chinese pagoda service stations that still survive in the Milwaukee area. **** Joseph Oscar OGDEN was a first cousin of brothers G W & H M Ogden (listed above) and also a first cousin of JQM's great-grandfather Jonathan Magie (a Ward 7 resident in 1891) and also Malvina Belle Ogden (wife of P D Armour, meat packer). The P D Armour family moved from Milwaukee to Chicago in 1877, probably taking several hundred meat packing jobs with them. You sent me a biography of J. Oscar, who was briefly a Milwaukee dry goods partner of Jonathan Magie about 1849-1850-- but he otherwise seems to have had "little visible means of support," other than his wealthy Cincinnati father, James Kilborn Ogden (1793-1869). ***** the 1890 Milwaukee Directory lists Jacob BEST (father-in-law of Capt. Fred Pabst?) as Treasurer of the <<Wisconsin Anti-Prohibition Publishing Co.>> at 457 E. Water St.
To: apetta@netwurx.net from John (in Chicago)-- even though you didn't respond to my Dietrich info and query of 11/28/01, I thought I'd try a second response to your many recent postings. By process of elimination, my guess is that Elm Street may now be West Garfield Street-- parallel to and one street south of North Ave. Try this: http://maps.yahoo.com/py?addr=2442+garfield&csz=milwaukee+wi
Mary, Thank you--was wondering if anyone knew what the name of the street changed to?? Didn't it change before the 1920 census? and if so, what did Elm streeet become?
