Good morning all, Over the past year and a half quite a few people have queried me through my volunteering on www.headstonehunter.com/ and my work as volunteer family history information researcher at historic Forest Home Cemetery regarding Evergreen Cemetery on the north side of Milwaukee. The cemetery was just sold but there is controversy. The new name of the cemetery is now Glen Oaks Cemetery. If you would like to read the entire article please go to: http://www.jsonline.com/news/wauk/jan02/11980.asp It is on the Waukesha page in this morningings newspaper, I believe, because the new owner is the gentleman who got into some trouble at Prairie Home Cemetery of Waukesha last year. The article explains it somewhat and his response. For those of you who have loved ones buried there I am sure this article would be well worth your reading. Bob of Brookfield
Yes, w/o is wife of and h/o is husband of--b/o is not body odor (GRIN) but brother of; s/o would be son of, and d/o would be daughter of. Sorry, I forget to change the "short-hand" when I post. Hi Vikki, I thought that was you. I just returned to Washington State. If I didn't answer your e-mail, please forgive me. It may have gotten lost in the transfer from my dad's computer to here. h/o stands for husband of. Heinrich Jonen, h/o (husband of) Elizabeth Michels w/o stands for wife of. Fischer (Dorothy, w/o (wife of) Nicholas Jonen) I made some photo copies of the names I was interested in out of Mimi bird's book. I had a chance to "glance through" all three of her books while at the Milwaukee Library. Currently, all those photocopies are packed in one of a hundred boxes or so. My JONEN connection comes through a marriage to a MICHELS family. George Michels and Anna Marie Thelen had three daughters and 1 son. I descend from Eva MICHELS who married Dr. Christian LINGER. Eva had a sister named Elizabetha Michels who married Heinrich Jonen. They had 12 children that I know of. This is my connection. it is a collateral line to mine. Susan (Petta) Nokes >mother Coreen Louise (Hoppe) Petta >mother, Lorraine Isabelle (Linger) Hoppe >father, Dr. Joseph M. Linger > mother, Eva (Michels) Linger >father, George Michels/mother Anna Marie (Thelen) Michels daughter, Elizabeth married Heinrich Jonen Was your Michael Jonen married to Gertrude Fuss? If so, I can extaend your line back for you. My ggg-grandmother, Anna Marie, is also buried at the St. Martin's Cemetery off Appleton Ave, near Timmerman Field. She is buried in a plot with her daughter Elizabeth and Henry Jonen. The stone is down, but I uncovered the grass over it and took a picture of it last spring. > My connection is: > Vikki (Braun) Graf > mother -- Eleanor (Behling) Braun > grandfather -- Raymond Behling > ggrandmother -- Elizabeth (Hartzheim) Behling > gggrandmother -- Sophia (Jonen) Hartzheim > ggggrandfather -- Michael Jonen -- He lived and farmed in Granville and is > buried in St. Martin's Cemetery. His children and grandchildren are married to some of the Surnames that you have listed. Please e-mail me at: snokes@tscnet.com Looking forward to hearing from you. Perhaps we can work together on this/these lines. Susan
Hi fellow Appletonian, Did you know that Emil E. Hartmann is buried at historic Forest Home Cemetery in Milwaukee - at least an Emil E. is. Buried in the lot with the one we have are: IDA C., IDA I., A CHILD OF MARIE HARTMANN, CLARA, ANNIE, CHARLES MALISCHKE AND AGNES H. MALISCHKE. Emil bought these 8 adult graves and 4 child/cremation graves partially on Feb. 23, 1894 and the 2nd portion on May 6, 1895. After his death Mrs. Agnes H. Malischke became the lot representative and following her death, Carl Malischke was appointed as Sole Heir. Buried in lots very near are Kathryn M. Malischke and Carl Malischke in the East 1/2 of Lot 21, Block 13, Section 45. Emil's are lots 19 & 20 in Block 9, of the same Section, 45. And then there is another Charles Malischke, Paul Malischke and Elsie Stemmler and Paul Stemmler buried in Lot 11, Block 13, Section 45. If you have intererest in this I can also look up all birth dates if Funeral Director provided them to the cemetery (I have all in the Emil Lot already if you want them). In most cases I can also look up where they were born, where they died, what the cause of death was if they died before about 1930 as that is when Funeral Directors pretty much stopped providing that information to cemetery and instead just putting on the burial permit that they died of a "non-communical disease." Most often their last residence address was also given but unless you have access, that is usually not too important as Milwaukee completely changed their numbering system and even the names of some streets in the early 30's. In the Emil lot there is a monument on the lot with all but the child, Clara and Annie having footstones also. Carl & Kathryn M. have a companion stone with both names on it and all four in the other hae headstone, no monument. Carl M. bought his two graves on Frv. 2, 1980, and Pauline M. bought her 4 adult and 2 smaller graves on June 10, 1898. I am sorry, though, that I cannot provide ykou the information regarding a Caroline nor Linger. No Caroline buried with this Emil E. nor with the other Malischke burials lots and we do not get maiden name information. Emil here was born Sept. 30, 1835 and the only one close to that would be Ida C. Could that be here, going by her middle name? Let me know if there is any information more that you would like to have that I might be able to help you with. As I have posted often on this message board, I am a one-day-a-week volunteer at historic Forest Home to relieve the office staff to do the work that they were hired to do, not family history/genealogical research. Bob (now of Brookfield, born and raised in Appleton)
Hi: I'm searching for SCHMIDT family members of Milwaukee and Taylor Counties who might have belonged to the following family: Charles SCHMIDT born 17 Dec 1851 in Pommern s/o Henry and Henriette. He married Wilhelmina Caroline Sophia BENDLIN d/o Carl and Caroline (VANZELOW) BENDLIN. Charles and Wilhelmina were married 21 Jun 1874 in St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Milwaukee and moved to Taylor County before 1885. Their children were: Martha (VIRCKS), Paul, Clara, Robert and Theodore (BRUNNER) SCHMIDT. Does anyone have any information on this family they'd like to share? Thank you, Judy
Hello again Susan, Thank you for answering so promptly. Your info concerning Joseph Linger certainly could be a connection. I will research that further via census, city directories, etc. The Hartmann's you mention do not ring a bell with my records but one never can be sure without further research. Coincedental info is that St. Sebastian's Church in Milwaukee is the Church I attended. I went to grade school and was married there. The Weiand Funeral Home is also familiar. In the funeral book is there anyone named MALISCHKE who signed? That would be a good connection for me, especially in 1941. Thanks also for your RENNER info. I do not think that my line fits any of your info. Hi again, I joined and haven't heard anything from them. I paid the 12.00 dollars and received a card saying I joined. I didn't get a newsletter or anything else from them. I have gone to there website and tried to get the free lookups that they offer their members and I didn't get anywhere with that either. They said that I would be listed in their next newsletter and yadda, yadda, yadda, but I haven't seen anything from them. Maybe I haven't pursued the right venues -- but I think that was $12.00 that I would like back. Vikki

Does anyone have access to yearbooks for Central High School in West Allis for the years 1939 / 1943? My cousin Harry "Buddy" Schumacher attended Central during this time, he enlisted in the Marines right after graduation and was subsequently killed in 1944. No one has a picture of him and I was hoping a yearbook would have his picture. If anyone does have access I would gladly pay for copying and postage. Diane, I have a Margaret LENGER who arrived with her parents in New York in September 1847. They traveled to SE Wisconsin and seem to have settled first in the Town of Greenfield, Milwaukee county, WI. Margaret was born Abt. 1836. I do not know when or where she was married, so I have no way of knowing who her husband's parents were of if he had any siblings... Records from St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Fussvile (Menomonee Falls), Wisconsin indicate that Margaret LENGER may have married a Nicolas Deitrich. Do you know anythin about him? Thank you in advance, Susan snokes@tscnet.com

Thank you in advance, Susan
Susan - I have a great grandmother who, according to the family bible was Ida Caroline LINGE and married Emil Edward HARTMANN in the 1860s. They raised their family in Milwaukee. I cannot find any record of her before marriage or any record of their marriage. My mother passed away in June 2001. When I checked on my e-mails from while I was gone--9 months--there were 3900 of them..I went to my server and asked them if they could download them on a zip or CD--they said they couldn't. I explained my fear that if I downloaded all of them, it might "crash" my computer--so they told me how to read them while still on their server. My husband, Gregg, saw this advertisement about an on-line pharmacy--but didn't have enough memory to download the info--so he insisted on using my computer, insisting that I download the 3900 messages to give him enough space for this company to send the info. By downloading the 3900 messages, my system contracted a virus and wiped out my whole computer. During "clean-up" of the virus, I lost all of my 3900 messages, all my email addresses and all my bookmarks...and an unknown amount of family history. I have the new version of McAfee and am using it before opening my mail.
Susan - I have Diederichs (Nicholas Michael) from Collis, MN in my family tree. Which names are you researching? My family came to Canada. Pam., Where did you see this book listed?? Could it have been printed by the Milwaukee County Genealogical Society?? I have a soft bound book title, Town of Milwaukee, published by Milwaukee County Genealogical Society, copyright 1989, by Miriam Y. Bird. If this is the book you are referring to, would you like me to look up something for you?? I would be glad to. I should think the Milwaukee Public Library would have a copy, but it may not circulate. I work in a library and we do a lot of inter-library loan. Often times, genealogical materials do not circulate. Of course, you could try, now that you have the author. Best of luck, Maxine At 12:15 AM 1/10/2002 -0800, you wrote: >Hello, would like to get a catalog code, or author, or publisher or whatever >I need to identify the book by this title above, to see if I can get this on >inter-library loan??
