I believe that site is www.cemeteries.org it is the Milwaukee Archdiocese site. I have found all my family at Holy Cross & Calvary Cemeteries. You can even do a search around any specific person's grave. Be careful of spellings etc... My gg-grandfather was listed as a ? Seelman, however, based on dates & locations (i have the plat), I know it is him. LS
Ellen, Thank you for the referenceto the page with the cemeteries! I hope someone is working on Holy Sepulcher Cemetery in Cudahay!!! I have quite a few ancestors buried there! Susan snokes@tscnet.com
I just want to make sure you all know there is a good book called Milwaukee Streets : The Stories Behind Their Names by Carl Baehr and Ellen Baehr. I don't have my copy yet (though the book has been out for years!), but I plan to buy one soon. It gives a lot of neat history about the names of our streets and the people they were named after. I'll check around for you when I get a minute. Right now Wisconsin Avenue is the "main street" that runs east and west in downtown Milwaukee. The numbered streets intersect it, running north and south. The intersection is about about the 600 block N. point, but since the 980 address didn't have a N. or S., I will have to find out. I did just buy a 1904 map from Ebay, but haven't received it yet, and probably won't for a few weeks as I'm bidding on other maps from the same person. I'll see what I can find out on my lunch break and get back to you. >>> rpmrazik@msn.com 02/12/02 08:39PM >>> Can anyone possibly tell me in 1930 what was at this address? I'm trying to determine if it was an individual's address, address of a hospital or something else. ???? Are there 1930 City Directories? Did you have a specific request for research at Holy Sepulcher? I live like 5 minutes away from there and can take digital photos. The only difficulty is that the only time I'd be able to go to the office would be on Saturday mornings and I'm busy the next two Saturdays. Hello all, Today's additions to the my Milwaukee Genealogy Site are as follows: I added to Cemetery X. Cemetery X is the place I put people who were buried in other counties, but lived in Milwaukee. Sometimes I will also add people here if I don't know the cemetery. These were from Grace Episcopal Church in Waukesha. Primarily residents of Milwaukee who were buried in Hartland. years abt 1907-1929 Names added are: WELLS, GIBSON, PEABODY, WEIFENBACH, MOUNT I added a Library and Lookup page. I have had one offer to do lookups thus far, I hope to get more volunteers in the near future. The Library List contains a link to most of the Milwaukee Area Libraries. When available I have also included the address and phone number. Many of these libraries have online catalogs. Sometimes you can get materials through interlibrary loan through your local library. Stop and check them out. I also added a list of area hospitals. These could be helpful in tracking down birth and death information. All these links can be found at http://www.linkstothepast.com/milwaukee Ellen- Milwaukee County Waukesha County
Dear Jenny, I am not sure exactly which cemetery online you were referring to. I do know of several Milwaukee cemeteries online. I have 3-5 links on the cemetery page of my Milwaukee County Site. http://linkstothepast.com/milwaukee/cems.html If I recall the Archdiocese page has a dark background. Bob, I figured out that the McCalvey would be Catholic...they seem to have attended St. Martin's Church which was located in Granville--until it was dissolved. It was a mission church of either St. Catherine's in Granville or St. Anthony's in Fussville...so if they aren't buried in the old run down cemetery of St. Martins on Appleton Ave--not far from Timmerman field...I've been there--most of the stnes are broken and grown over by grass... Anyway, I may find a few at St. Anthony's...appearently McCalvey's were related to BRAHM's, ETZEL's and BERTLIEN's All Catholic..so they wouldn't be at Foret Home. Hi all, I seem to remember visiting a web site for Milwaukee that had gravemarker inscriptions. You could do a surname search and matching names would show up along with the cemetery name and the inscription. Does anyone have this URL? Does this exist or was I dreaming? Hello Again Listers, After the flurry of activity from the new Milwaukee Genea Site, I wasn't able to put anything new on yesterday. There have been numberous inquiries and people offering to help and contribute. On behalf of the researchers I would like to that everyone who is helping make this a success. Hi, Which year would you like me to look the names up...were they in any particular clubs? Sports? Band? Choir? Would they be a Frosh? Soph? Junior? Senior? There are no indexes to these yearbooks--so it would help if you could give me an idea--at least which year in school they were...I only have years 1937, 1938 and 1939 (Cardinal Pennant-Wauwatosa High) Thanks, Susan ----- Original Message ----- From: <DunnDawn@aol.com> To: <WIMILWAU-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, February 11, 2002 5:46 AM Subject: [WiMilwau] Re: WIMILWAU-D Digest V02 #12 > HI Susan, > Thank you for your offer! HI Susan, Thank you for your offer! Would you please look up LEISTIKOW and REIMER in the Wauwatosa year book? When I graduated from Tosa West in '73, I never would have thought that I'd be researching family in Tosa these many years later! Thank you, Dawn
Hi everybody! I am new to this list, and only in the beginning of my searching. When I was a kid my grandmother did a lot of searching and I have information all the way back to 1669. When I looked in all these papers I got very interested in one specific family. Of the ten children in this family, seven of them emigrated to the US! The one of these I know most of is Fred Nelson (Fredrik Hjalmar Nilsson in Sweden) who emigrated in 1891. His younger brother left from Sweden eleven years later and in his passenger record it says he was on his way "To my brother Fred Nelson 1222 Galena St Milwaukee". I have also found a grave at the Wood National Cemetary: "Nelson, Fred H, d. 04/20/1936, PVT CO D 7 ENG 3RD DIV, Plot: 28 62, bur. 04/23/1936, *" I don't know if that is my Fred, but maybe it could be? I would like some help from you with what I should do next? As I wrote I am totally new on this. Fred Nelson was born in Karlsborg, NederKalix (Sweden) 26 Apr 1873. So, if you have any suggestions - please tell me! /Linda I am sorry for my bad English... but I hope you got the point! :)
