Good morning Jean, I don't have any problems reaching the site. Went to it last night and again this morning typing the URL that Ellen put on line. Try it again. Go to it myself quite often, even have my screen-name on it. Click on Forest Home Cemetery and there I am. Been awhile! Hope and pray all is well with you and yours. Bob of Brookfield
I think you might have used the comma from the sentence as part of the url. You will have better luck without the comma. http://linkstothepast.com/milwaukee/cems.html Ellen- *********** REPLY SEPARATOR *********** On 3/15/02 at 2:27 AM Jazinski@aol.com wrote: >In a message dated 3/14/02 6:18:00 PM Mountain Standard Time, >waukesha@linkstothepast.com writes: > > >> http://linkstothepast.com/milwaukee/cems.html, > >This link is not available. First of all, it was very nice of you to help! Unless I read this wrong, Vikki was not looking for the location of the street. There is a book that tells the origin of the street names, and this book can be useful if the street was named after a family you're researching. I don't have a copy of the book, but I think other list members do. Could anyone who has the Milwaukee Streets book please look up a Jonen Street. I know that there is a Jonen Street in the now defunct town of Granville. I would like to know if there is any information on the Jonen's in the book. Thanks for any help. Vikki
There was a Deutsch Briesen just SE of Konitz (current Polish names Brzezno and Chojnice). There may be other places called Briesen. If you can get to a genealogy library, check Meyers Gazetteer. It was published in 1912 and so contains all place names that were part of Germany prior to WWI. The link that Rich listed is a database for the Catholic Cemeteries in Milwaukee County. If you go to my website: http://linkstothepast.com/milwaukee/cems.html, you will find a few more cemeteries online. I am in the process of locating more information, if anyone is interested in anything specific, let me know. I will keep an eye out for it. Consider this option: Preussen, meaning Prussia. But, at my age, I am never certain of anything any more. Many people seemed to report that they were from Prussia/Preussen back in the 1800s. So take a look at other opinions rendered. Bill in Denver
I have recently come across the namd Brisen Germany in the 1870 census and Breusen on a birth cert. from Ill. Does anyone know where this place is?

Hi: This may help to finding the Enumeration Districts for larger citizens including Milwaukee. Doug Minocqua, WI > Stephen P. Morse, PhD has a new finding aid ready for the 1930 Federal > Census. Does the 1930 Census come out in April 2002? I thought this is what I heard but wasn't sure. Thanks. Darlene Researching: Klein, Schroeder, Roberts, Velliquette, Deckard, Schneider, Sutton, LaFayette, LeGere, Prickett, Barnett, Bost, Ice
Only the Southern States are indexed for the 1930 census. So, unless you know exactly where your family was in 1930, you are going to have a lot of fun finding them. I feel sorry for anyone who has ancestry in New York City or Chicago or any other large city. My parents were living in a little town in California in 1930. At least I know where they were. I'm sure Ancestry or some other company will go out with a full index. Annie
April 1st (Really! I'm not fooling!) You have 17 days to collect your addresses :) Of course, just because it's being released April 1st doesn't mean it's going to be available in every library, LDS, or Internet site on April 1st. Are there any websites to search burials in Milwaukee County? Shari
Dear List. I'm so sorry about this email. I thought I was sending it to a friend. I apologize. Have to pay closer attention to the 'sender'. Sincerely, Jean
Interesting. A long time ago, I had an address so I went to this huge map that was under lock and key (at the library) and she said with my address I could find the ED. Yeah, right. I look up the Soundex and the ED # on there is exactly the same ED # you need on the Ancestry census. My Carl and Caroline were in ED 193. I knew the sheet # and the line #. Had no trouble. I will be spending a lot of time on the Soundex for a while. Don't know what we'll do with the 1930's. Is doing a Soundex so difficult that they haven't done one yet? The computers at the library are much quicker and I can look up my census right there. She said they don't make copies tho. I'll try anyway and see. She also said they hadn't downloaded Mr. SYD or whoever that plugin is. Well, duh, they did have it and I was able to work much faster on there computer. So when mine goes to the repair shop you can reach me at the library :-) Hee-hee. I'll bet Sandy knows her way around this library better than I do. I just don't know where to look. Oh, I have to look for Carl's papers of intent. Help???? He came on 3-18-1881 to Baltimore and it said PA. Trudy said I should look those up first before writing to a church. Ok, gotta go. I wonder if we can do email from the library :-) :-) Love, Jean
Is there a soundex for 1910? I was told there is no index for 1910 so you have to find an address and E.D. Cheryl --- Jazinski@aol.com wrote: > Interesting. I'm still figuring this all out, but as far as I can tell there's no special book which lists the streets and their ED's for each year of the census. How a person finds out which ED to search depends on what year you're dealing with. -------- 1900-prior -------- I have no clue. Ask again in a few years :) -------- 1910: -------- 1. You can view a Milwaukee Street map with the E.D.'s marked on it at your local Family History Center. Title Wright's map of Milwaukee Notes: Milwaukee : Wright Directory, c1922. Election districts for 1910 census have been marked on the map. FHL US/CAN Fiche 6049950 2. If you're near Milwaukee County, you can view a Milwaukee Street map with the E.D.'s marked on it at Central Library. Ask for it at the Humanities desk. 3. If you have a census subscription to Ancestry.com, they give a description of the E.D.'s for 1910.You can refer an old street map and determine what E.D. to search. Or, you can use this information to create your own E.D. map. (This is what I did- probably not as accurate as the FHL or Library map, but good enough and I can use it any time of the day or night. 4. Post your questions on the Milwaukee mailing list or on the rootsweb/ancestry Milwaukee bulletin board. -------- 1920: -------- For 1920, Wisconsin has a soundex index. Ask for the index from your local LDS FHC, use a Wisconsin ARC (Area Research Center), or request a lookup from a mailing list or bulletin board. To find in what E.D. an address was for the 1920 census, I've found two options: 1. You can view a Milwaukee Street map with the E.D.'s marked on it at your local Family History Center. Title Wright's map of Milwaukee Notes Photocopy of original published: Milwaukee : Wright Directory, c1922. Includes 1920 enumeration districts provide by the Reference Department of the Genealogical Society of Utah. FHL US/CAN Fiche 6117535 2. You can order a map from the U.S. government National Archives that has the E.D.'s marked on it. Last week I sent a letter off asking for information on how to order the map and how much it costs. Of course I have no response yet :) http://www.nara.gov/publications/microfilm/census/1920/1920pt1.txt 1920 Enumeration District Maps The Bureau of the Census produced enumeration district maps for many counties, cities, and towns. Those available for the 1920 census are listed below. To order copies of the maps, contact the Cartographic and Architectural Branch (NNSC), National Archives, 8601 Adelphi Road, College Park, MD 20740-6001. The prices vary with the size of the map. -------- 1930 -------- For 1930, I don't believe there is going to be a soundex available. If an index is going to be created, allow plenty of time for it to get done :). The easiest method I've heard is to find a street address, use Stephen Morse's site to determine the ED's to search, and then search those ED's. Hope this helps. If you get any other private responses, please ask the sender to post to the list because I'd love to learn more!
