    3. Newspapers have been charging for years to have the obits/death notices published. It wouldn't surprise me with the popularity of the internet, and people now reading information online rather than picking up a newspaper, that the newspapers are starting to charge to have the item published online. Newspapers are losing money and they have found yet another way to charge for something. Newspaper publishing is not like it was in the old days. It used to be an obit was published out of respect for the dead. their family or the community. Now Newspapers could care less who died unless the headlines will get them a better market share. If it is a story that had controversy involved, you will find it. If not, it is luck of the draw and whether it was a slow news day. 1. Re: [WiMilwau] Re: Janesville Plank Rd. cemetery
    2. I have a few maps that shows where it began.... email me if you would like some copies.... GipCWoman@aol.com I live in the area and found it when I was doing research on my property & home. Janesville Plank Rd actually started at Mitchell Street & 8th Avenue, which is now 13th Street...... This is according to an 1874 map and an 1858 map. I live off of 8th St. & Mitchell St, right now.....8th Street used to be 3rd Avenue 6th Street used to be 1st Avenue The streets were renamed in the 1930's...... I've been researching my house some...it was built in 1874.... Loomis Road also came all the way to Mitchell Street..... It is now known as Windlake Ave. GipC

    3. Excuse the following comment: "Soon they will have us paying for our obituaries BEFORE we pass on!" It follows suit with Milwaukee's wonderful idea of not computer generating and or documenting, death information. Ever see those HUMONGOUS books <yes I did say BOOKS>, they have their info in? I often find myself thinking those are the types of books that will be waiting at the pearly gates. There'll I will stand, waiting in line to enter paradise....and in the faint background hearing the sweet sound of an Angel "Next please"..... ~Cherie At 08:27 AM 4/8/02 -0700, you wrote: > >From www.jsonline.com's paid obituary page: > >About Death Notices: Death notices are paid classified >listings and only those notices contracted >specifically for online placement appear online. > >I believe that up until a few days ago, every obituary >that was printed in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel was >also automatically published online. 3. >From www.jsonline.com's paid obituary page: About Death Notices: Death notices are paid classified listings and only those notices contracted specifically for online placement appear online. I believe that up until a few days ago, every obituary that was printed in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel was also automatically published online. This made their online obituary archive a valuable genealogical tool and an enormous time-saver: If you didn't find it online, they didn't print it (since January, 1999). With this new policy, we're back to where we were a few years ago: You can search for it online, but if you don't find anything you have to search microfilm. Does anyone have any more information on why this policy was changed? Are they charging extra if you want to have the obituary published online? 3. Hi Mary -- I hope I am not too late for an obituary lookup, and do sincerely thank you for your help. I have a greatgrandfather who is giving me a lot of frustration. He was: Peter Johnson Born 16 Apr 1839 in Denmark Married in Milwaukee 14 Oct 1868 (Martha Hansen) Resident of Milwaukee Died on or about 5 Dec 1871 (lost "at sea" in the Great Lakes - probably Lake Michigan) Any information would be greatly appreciated. 1. [WiMilwau] German Municipalities
    2. Mary Frank
    3. Just found this site, which may prove useful for those researching Milwaukee-area ancestors from Germany. It lists the names of German municipalities, plus the land/state/region and county they are in. The list seems pretty extensive. http://www.faerber.muc.de/dmoz/de-gemeinden/ There is also a geoserve site for Germany, but I can't find it in my bookmarks. If anyone knows that site, please post it to our group. Thanks!

Be glad to help Ellen. To some extent lists overlap. People move, counties get broken up, Milwaukee is an immigration port, and so forth. I sub to the Kenosha, Racine, Washington and a couple of state lists. It seems to me that the folks that subscribe to this list pretty much stay on the topic of Milwaukee related genealogy and if there is an occassional errant post, I don't think its a big deal. 2. Ellen (Genealogy)
    3. Maybe someone can help me, as I am relatively new to this list. I don't mean to complain, but within the last 2 weeks or so I have read more posts of NON-Milwaukee related connections. Is there an unwritten rule here that people can post to the list even though their ancestor are not Milwaukee related? There are other lists to post to concerning other areas of the state. Maybe I am missing something. But it seems if the person is Milwaukee related, and you want Milwaukee information, you should at least, please, put that information in your post. If you offer to do lookups throughout the state fine, but ask people to mail you privately for non-Milwaukee related people. Let's try to keep the Milwaukee List, Milwaukee Related. It certainly cuts down on the number of emails and the size of the digest. Just my 2 cents Ellen-
