Many thanks for all the kind offers of help with the 1910 Census. I have a subscription to ancestry.com for the Census images, but am finding it difficult to navigate the Census with a modern map because many of the streets have changed names. Is there an online map of this period with the contemporary street names? It would be an enormous help if someone could suggest which ED Highland Avenue might be in. The Census people have done a fine job of hiding it from me. Thanks again Terry Haslam-Jones Lancashire England

The problem may be that there was no Highland Avenue in 1910. There was a Highland Boulevard in the area around Washington Park and a Highland Place on the East Side that only ran for three blocks. The present Highland Avenue was called Tamarack west of the Milwaukee River. Good evening John & Lynda, I would agree with what John wrote except for one thing. Union Cemetery is not under or with Forest Home Cemetery. They are with Graceland Cemetery on N. 43rd St.; in fact, all records for Union Cemetery are there. Good luck. Bob of Brookfield
Lynda, I found these people listed in the Milwaukee Township Cemetery also known in Union Cemetery. It is located in the 5900 block of North Port Washington Road in Glendale. The cemetery is hardly visible and is bordered by two shopping malls. ADLER F. Carl b. 1834 d. 1912 buried with Friedericka ADLER Fredericka (Schramm) b. 25 Sep 1842 d. 15 Jul 1909 buried with F. Hi Lynda, Before you go to the cemetery, look at the microfilms of the cemetery records. The FHC has films of all the records. You'll learn a more than you would reading just tombstones. The records have Name, Time and place of birth, Time and place of death, Date of burial, and Cause of death. It also has the location of the grave but you need a map to figure it out. After you've read the films, you can still write the cemetery if you still want to go. Union Cemetery is now under the supervision of Forest Home Cemetery. I visited Union Cem. a couple years ago. I would suggest that you will feel much safer if you go with a few other people. (I was alone and was a bit nervous.) You should indeed write for the grave locations before you go- there are too many to systematically search. - John Faludi At 7:02 PM -0400 5/3/02, LD4847@aol.com wrote: >I have several family members at union Cemertey. how is it now and is it safe >to go there. Ellen, I would agree with Bill. It is a well traveled street during the day time, especially 27th St. I can't fathom any problem taking pictures at that time. One of the problems of the area is that there is quite a few rooming houses just south of there and a lot of alcoholics are there so you might get hassled even during the daytime for some money but even that isn't too likely. I had somewhat the same problem a few years back in Rochester, New York when I made my first trip there to meet new-found family. I stopped to take a picture of the house my grandfather lived in. It wasn't in the "nicest" of neighborhoods. I got a good picture without getting out of the car, just rolling the window down. If all else fails, you could call me and I would be more than happy to accompany you to the area and more or less be your body guard if you are coming alone. I honestly don't even think you would be hassled for money if there were two of you. It would be best, of course, on a Friday afternoon (the day that I donate for this kind of thing at historic Forest Home Cemetery (lookups, tours and yes, even tours away from he cemetery as long as they are not half-day tours. I am also available to help people find places, as long as you give me some advance notice. I live in the Riverwest/Harambee portion of Milwaukee (just west of the Milwaukee River, several miles north of Downtown). I have no qualms about navigating around the various Milwaukee "hoods" during daylight hours. Mary Frank >>> Gartzr@aol.com 05/03/02 03:46PM >>> Ellen, I would agree with Bill. Just wondered if anyone on this list knew more about the subject firm Or had any photos of their place. I know it included a very large Lumberyard as well as carriage-building operation. It was where my Mother grew up since her father was the watchman and was in charge Of the horses that pulled their delivery wagons. I would welcome any additional information about this business or Referral to sources. I will be at the NGS Conference in Milwaukee Next week so could look up if I knew where. Ellen Barr, CLU -- Adm. My house in Milwaukee was built in 1874.... I would be interested in seeing more pictures from around that year..... Does anyone have any to share? I am really interested in finding homes like mine so I can renovate mine to look more authentic on the outside and see what peoples yards looked like too.....
Thank you for sharing these pics.....they were great....
