I am trying to recall what I was told: The Cemetery is currently on 13th and Juneau, but it is not used as a cemetery. Development stopped in this area recently when bodies were unearthed. The cemetery closed in the mid or late 1860s with directives that people move the graves of family. This did not get done completely. Records no longer exist. Hi, Last eve someone made a post of a website person had gotten up with multiple links for Milwaukee info on it. I thought I had saved it but I now find I did not. It is unlisted in the archives-if some kind person still has the site would they please send it to be? Thank you so much, Kathy
Perhaps I was a bit premature in my observations. It appears that going to "some" of the individual newspapers you must also purchase the obituary through the news archives. The difference being though through the newspaper is a bit cheaper. $2.95 per article rather than $3.50 There are also more pricings available through the newspapers such as a one week pass 3 articles for $6.95. I apologize for not digging a little deeper before making my last observation regarding obitsarchive.com. There are so many scams out there regarding genealogy, always use caution before signing up and paying for any service. I have collected a few of the known scams over the years and put it on my website if you want to review it. http://linkstothepast.com/milwaukee/genscams.html Ellen- *********** REPLY SEPARATOR *********** On 1/25/2005 at 8:20 PM Ellen- (Waukesha) wrote: >Obitsarchive.com looks like a scam to me. Hi everyone, Quick question. I recently got a copy of my gr gr gr grandfathers (John Thinnes and Mary Weber) marriage 'certificate' from 1849. It was signed by Michael Heiss who I have now learned was the pastor at Old St. Mary's Church at the time. My ggg grandfather died not too long after he was married but I'm not sure exactly where or when. Does anyone know if Old St. Mary's has any records that are available? Also, is there a cemetery at the church or one near by? Any leads would be appreciated. Thanks, Dave Pease

Obitsarchive.com looks like a scam to me. Just my opinion anyway. You can get the obits for the Peoria Journal right from their website: http://www.pjstar.com/system/search.html The Journal Star posts most, but not all, stories published in the newspaper on PJStar.com for free for seven days. Every article, including obituaries, written by Journal Star staff since 1991 should be available through our online archives about three days after publication. And the Springfield Journal Register here: http://www.sj-r.com/search/mediastream.asp You will find most local articles published in The State Journal-Register since July 1, 1985. This includes Obituaries, Police Beat and Letters to the Editor. If the article ran on the website in the last seven days, it can be found in our free 7 day archives. I realized when looking at the Wisconsin listings that all the newspapers there are available online for free. Just looking at the archdiocese website, Dave, I think there is a good chance he is in Trinity. If you want to remind me in spring, I do not mind going to various sections to see whether there is a stone. How close can you get to the year of death? Dianne
St. Mary's records are filmed. I recall looking at them at a Family History Center in Hales Corners--outside of Milwaukee. Calvary and Trinity are the oldest Catholic Cemeteries in the area. Neither are particularly close, although I was told Trinity moved. If he is not at these cemeteries, then other possibilities are Forest Home, Union, and an old German cemetery on Juneau and 13th Streets--if that ethnic group applies. All records from that cemetery have been destroyed, I learned. Hellow Ashley, I don't have a subscription to Obitsarchive.com but I have access to newspaperarchive.com at home using my library card. If you want anything looked up there, I'd be happy to email the scanned newspapers. There are many Illinois newspapers listed, just not the ones you listed. As far as I know, the vital records would have to be requested from the courthouse or from a lookup volunteer or a paid researcher. The website is: http://www.milwaukeecounty.org/service/serviceDetail.asp?id=1094 You can only get film for the birth, death and marriages before 1907 (and the indexes are on Ancestry.com). But since your people came later, you would need to go directly to the courthouse and look through the hard copy books and transcribe the materials. If you want them to send you copies, it's expensive, as you'll note at the website above. Sometimes people on this list make trips to the courthouse and have a bit of extra time to help out, but I don't know if anyone has a trip scheduled anytime soon. Hello listers I am new to this list, although I am on a few in England. I am hoping someone can help me. I am trying to trace the ancestors of my grandmother's GRIMES family. The main family made up of my grandmother's parents, John Grimes, born in Llangwm, Pembrokeshire, Wales, mother Sarah and sons Harry and Cyril and daughter Nellie, emigrated to Milwaukee in 1915 from Gillingham in Kent, although I believe two of the sons, George and Thomas may have arrived earlier in 1913. Nellie married in Wisconsin and had twin daughters, (I have a photo of Nellie and the girls); Cyril was drowned at the " New Lido" in 1916 at the age of 16. I have found Harry in the 1920 census "28street" and George in "29 Street". Does any of this ring a bell with anyone and how can I get access to the "births, marriages and deaths" of Milwaukee? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Best wishes, Harold Spurgeon, Auckland, New Zealand.
Ashley, Thanks for sending that to the list. That is great. Ancestry has an interesting page, new to me, where you search your family names based on the 1920 census. It then gives you a distribution by state. The GEIST surname occurs in nearly every state by 1920 but is concentrated in PA. It's fun to play with. Does anyone on this list have a subscription to the ObitsArchive.com which would include lookups for the two papers below? I found a reference on the web to this apparent clearing house for obituaries but it costs rather a lot. I've been told by cousins that many family obits are in one or both of these two papers, which since I don't live nearby I never get to see. The Peoria Journal - Star obits for 1991 to 2004 and The Springfield Journal Register 1985 - 2004 I probably have hundreds of cousins in the area covered by these papers but if someone would be willing to do lookups I'd confine the request to two or three names. Thanks for your time, Ashley
I don't have a subscription either but I am in Springfield and the Lincoln Library keeps hard copies. I am currently waiting for an inter library loan of mirofilm census there to transcribe for the internet. Maybe I could check then. Who? When? ashley tiwara <[email protected]> wrote:Does anyone on this list have a subscription to the ObitsArchive.com which would include lookups for the two papers below?
