    3. When my mother and aunt were in their 90's they still talked about the fun they had at the Rohn Swimming School and how the Milwaukee River was a center of activities. There was also a very active canoe club, of which they were members. That canoe was over 50 years old when I "lived in it" on Lake Keesus in the 1940's. I found reference to the swimming school at http://mptv.org/iremem32.htm -- a 2000 Milwaukee Public Television program. Perhaps someone might do a look-up on this. 3. This is the part of Milwaukee known as Riverwest. My house is actually in the area known as Harambee, which is directly west of Riverwest. Riverwest, as its name implies, is just west of the Milwaukee River, in the area north of where the river kind of turns west (just south of North Ave., which is actually an east-west running street). Look at this site I just found when I was looking for a map for you: http://www.uwm.edu/Library/digilib/Milwaukee/records/maps.html You need the MrSid viewer to enlarge and pan on the maps, but it gives you the link for downloading that under the description of the map. If you go to the 1898: Wright's map of Milwaukee and enlarge it, and look for sections 6, 13 and 21 (the larger numbers superimposed over the neighborhoods), you will see Riverwest (east part of those sections) and Harambee (west part of those sections). Riverwest goes from the river west to Holton St. It goes south along Reservoir Av. and north to Capitol Dr.--which I think is what they call Lake in this old map. Harambee goes from Holton St. to I-94, but since I-94 didn't exist back then, the rough boundary for what is now Harambee neighborhood would be 8th-9th St. I live just south of the intersection of George and Richards, to the northeast of the big section #21. George is now Townsend. This is a very useful map, as you can see the old street names real clearly when you enlarge it and pan around it using the MrSid viewer (which is a viewer used by Ancestry.com, so those with a subscription to Ancestry probably have this on their computers already--but it's a free download if you don't have it already). If you enlarge and look for the "R" in Milwaukee River, where it curves through Riverwest, you'll see where Bolton and Wright came together where Karen Duffy's uncle John Orzechowski drowned. I think Bolton St. has another name, but I can't remember it off the top of my head. I rarely go into that neighborhood, as the first major north-south street west of the river is Humboldt. >In a message dated 3/3/05 1:11:55 PM Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] >writes: > > > > >>This is the area of Milwaukee in which I live. >> >> > >what part of Milwaukee is this? >Ann from MI > > >==== WIMILWAU Mailing List ==== >For subscribe/unsubscribe and other general list information, please see >http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sewis/wimilwau.htm > >============================== >Search the US Census Collection. 2. May I suggest that someone who lives in Milwaukee and is willing to do lookups check the Milwaukee County Courthouse. You can make up to a 4 hour appointment for genealogy research. Someone could look up this boy's name in the index for that year and see what his death date is. From there, someone can then check the old Milwaukee Journals on Microfiche for any article or an obituary. I do not live in Milwaukee and cannot do the lookup for you until July (when I will return). But if someone can find a death date, I can pull the Microfiche of the Milwaukee Journals. I have some access to that. Good luck, Diane

    3. This is the area of Milwaukee in which I live. I'm sorry to say that children (and others) still drown in the river all to often. Just last year we lost two young sisters who drowned when the river was swollen. The younger one fell in and the older one jumped in to save her, even though neither could swim and the water was higher and rougher than usual. It was weeks and weeks before both bodies were found. mrf Tom & Karen Duffy wrote: >Perhaps check old newspapers like the Milwaukee Journal. Here's part of my >family's Milwaukee River story. Should have also added that if you find it hard to get to the Milwaukee County Historical Society building but can get to the Milwaukee Public Library, they have a few volumes of history in their Humanities Room on the 2nd floor that have these pictures in them also. If you are interested in which volumes, give me a note and I will look them up for you. Bob of Brookfield (spelled right this time)

    3. Perhaps check old newspapers like the Milwaukee Journal. Here's part of my family's Milwaukee River story. John was my grandmother's oldest brother. July 27, 1914: "Mother Sees Her Boy Drown While swimming in the river at the foot of Wright Street Sunday, John Orzechowski, 11, 915 Bolton St., was seized with cramps and drowned. The boy's mother and five smaller brothers and sisters stood upon the bank, unable to assist. The mother, with her six children, walked to the river to spend Sunday afternoon and John begged permission to go in swimming. When this was granted he joined other boys and dived off a springboard. His body did not come to the surface. Police began dragging the river Monday. Several of the youth's swimming companions risked their own lives in efforts to recover the body." "The body of John Orzechowski, 11, 915 Bolton St., who drowned while swimming in the Milwaukee river at the foot of Wright St, was recovered Tuesday. The police dragged the river throughout Monday, but were unable to find the body. The body, discovered floating down the river by John Padjewski, 916 Dousman St., was taken to the home of the parents." 3. Pam, This is an outstanding thing for you to do. I've been trying to trace the family of my grandmother's sister in law, Wica BUTKOVIC. I suspect she had a brother or cousin living near her in the Canton, Illinois area as with the help of several people I've found another Butkovic cluster there and she, Wica, married a GRUBISIC, my great - uncle. However, I'd really like to know what happened to the woman I think is her sister, Filipina BUTKOVIC who married George BUBANJ or BUBANY and lived in Gallup, New Mexico. There's a Blaz Bubany also in Gallup who may be a cousin. There ought to be a Carlo BUTKOVIC somewhere and I haven't found him. I'd be interested in any BUTKOVIC or BUTKOVICH you could find anywhere, any GRUBISIC or GRUBISICH the same. The families are from northern Croatia origionally. I would particularly like to find any of the names I mentioned above however. Or to be more accurate, if your wonderful subscription turns up any of those names, I would be delighted. Thanks so much for offering, in any case, Ashley P.S. Time frame is about 1890 Croatia to 1955 New Mexico for Filipina Butkovic Bubanj.
