Greetings to all. I am searching for obituaries of family members previously living in Milwaukee as they disappeared from the Milwaukee directories. I have found that (in the case of the people for whom I am searching) the directories between 1894-1937 frequently give the death date and age at death for persons now deceased who had previously been listed there. I have 2 questions: Does anyone know about what month of the year the Milwaukee directory was published. I am guessing, based on the previously referred to published death notices, that it would have been around August or September. As I have about 20 "missing persons" who disappear from the directories in the years between 1925-1959, this information would be very helpful, as none of them are in the social security death index and, my current only recourse is to read the year following someones last listing day by day---and I can't begin to say how time consuming that is, not to mention the eye and back fatigue. If I knew when the directory went to press, at least I could begin with a more likely month following the last listing of a person. The other question I have is this: is there any group who has indexed or is currently indexing obituaries in the Milwaukee journal or other Milwaukee papers, in the manner that the wonderful Stevens Point and Outgamie genealogy groups have done? Thanks for any helpful suggestions. Anne Gwaltney
JOHN AND MARIA, MARIE OR MARY HAD A SON BY THE NAME OF AMOS AND ADAM. ONE OR THE OTHER KILLED HIS WIFE AND POSSIBLY 2 CHILDREN AND WAS SUPPOSEDLY IN WAUPUN PRISON BUT HAVEN'T ANY DATES AND HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO VERIFY IT. J AND M CAME INTO NEW YORK AND HAVE A MIGRATION PATTERN I THINK FIGURED OUT. BOUGHT PROPERTY IN FOND DU LAC IN MAY OF 1857 AND I LOOKED FOREVER AND FINALLY CAME ACROSS SOME PHOTO'S THAT WERE TAKEN BY A PHOTOGRAPHER IN MILWAUKEE SO JUST BY CHANCE I WENT THERE AND FOUND THAT THEY HAD LIVED THERE AND THAT IS WHERE MARIE DIED IN 1909. BUT MOST OF THE FAMILIES BURIALS WERE AT THE ESTABROOK CEMETERY IN FOND DU LAC. SO HAVE PICTURES AND SOME DATES FROM THAT AND HAVE PIECED TOGETHER SOME DATES OF BIRTH. HAS TAKEN ME FOREVER THO. BUT OTHER THAN THE ADAM NAME WHO MAY HAVE HAD A SON BY THE NAME OF AMOS, I HAVE NO CONNECTION. IF UR INTERESTED I CAN SEND YOU NAMES AND DATES. Thanks Sandy for explaining why you use all caps. Yes, I quite understand. Did you know that if you are using Word you can go to the top and press the "A" button and enlarge the print you see on screen? It really helps old eyes since I am 72 and appreciate larger print as well. Please let me know if you come across any connection in our CHRIST lines. I have a feeling mine migrated to Milwaukee about 1925 or thereabouts but have not pursued it since this was a younger sister of my grandmother. I have a lot on Gertrude (Mrs. Amos)CHRIST and copied info on his brothers just because I've found that sometimes colleral lines get me around brick walls. Good luck in your search. http://www.geocities.com/scarletgen/walworth/history/index.html This site might explain why people emigrated from England to Walworth County. I haven't had time to read it thoroughly. My great-grandparents, Robert & Rebecca Mitchell Riley, emigrated from Keighley, Yorkshire in 1883 to Milwaukee and then Ozaukee County to work in the woolen mills. Gail in Appleton
Hi Sandy: May I suggest you take off the caps lock...in e-mail that is considered Shouting. Not to be picky but just trying to help. I have the CHRIST family in Wausaukee, WI (near Marinette) with Henry who was father of Amos, H.P., and Peter James but do not see any John Peter in the listings I have of their children. Amos was married to my great aunt (my grandmother's sister) but I know very little about her. I do have a photo of the country store that Amos ran in Wausaukee. Do your CHRISTs go back to any of these? I see from some of your earlier posts that you are looking in an 1875-80 timeframe. That was when my CHRISTs were in Wausaukee area. One English adopted relative of mine came to Bay View to work in the mills from St. Clair County, Michigan. He was a blacksmith. John Bishop was his name. Also, the famous (in Bay View) Beulah Brinton came from St. Clair County, Michigan with her husband who worked in the mill. I believe he ran the mill. There is a strong connection between St. Clair County, Michigan and the Bay View neighborhood in Milwaukee.
Cindy, What do you think was the draw for Englishmen to go to Walworth county? What was there? One of my family names is Hargreaves which is English. And I frequently run into unrelated Hargreaves in Walworth county. Maxine

Hi, My Great Uncle Franz/Frank Heinrich Louis Fuhrmann married Wilhelmina Johanna Dorothea Frey on Nov 27, 1879 in Milwaukee. She is the D/O; Otto Frey & Friedericke Gustmann Frey . He was around 20 at marriage. I had been unable to locate them together in any census so decided to check out her parents. Lo & behold Mina shows up in 1880 census 5th Ward Milwaukee living with her parents as a 22 yr old Widow working in her fathers Tailor shop. Can anyone who has access to Milwaukee City directories look in Directories from 1877 up to the mid 1890's to try & answer these questions? Did Mina work in her fathers Tailor shop prior to marriage? Did she have to work in the shop in 1880/81 to support a possible child on the way? Is she listed in 1880 as a Frey or a Fuhrmann? Does a Franz or Frank Fuhrmann show up in any Directories from 1877 up to 1882 as possibly a carpenter or a cabinet maker or a shoemaker? He resided at 620 Hubbard St 6th Ward prior to marriage. I'm hoping that the directories can tell when Mina started & stopped working for her father & if a baby shows up in late 1880-early 1881 & trying to determine approx time frame Franz/Frank may have died. No marriage shows for her from 1880 to 1910 in Milwaukee Co. No death shows for Franz or Frank in Milwauke Co nor in state from 1879 up to 1900. I checked out a few cemeteries & find Frank unlisted. I have a relative currently writing to Union cem in Milwauke to see if Frank is listed. Open to any & all suggestions-ideas-anything. Thank you for any possible help on this mystery, Kathy

That's a great story! My grandfather was one of those "train engineers." And, it is Charlevoix...a lovely town in Michigan!
Anne, I saw your little message, on the Milwaukee boards. I have a very strong "English side", from my Mother's father. They seemed to marry German, Luxembourg women, but the first couple to the Milwaukee area, were true English. My G-G- Grandfather came from Yorkshire, his wife, came from a town very close to where he was from, in Yorkshire. I am finding clues, that they married in New York state. Her family seemed then to move to Walworth County, WI. The HASLAM's stayed in Buffalo, N.Y., I surmise for Naturalization, although I have g-g-grandfather James' 1st papers from New Hampton, Chickasaw, Iowa. He was an engineer, or must have worked to that position. So, the Iowa thing makes some sense, there was a line from Chicago, to New Hampton, put in about the time of the signing. Also, in the family we have photos of the HASLAMs visiting Lancaster, WI. I surmise some of the mother's side(WOGAN), may have gone to that area, possibly as miners in the early days. The courthouse in New Hampton, would have been the closest, for the beginning, of the process. After New York, James and family went to Charlevioux,?, MI., they are found living next to a family name of WOGAN, in the census. Then they show up in Milwaukee, on some census, 2 more children born, including my g-grandfather Alfred "Wesley". The train connection still stays in the family. I have found more WOGANs listed in the Milwaukee census, but not sure of the connection to the "older" family. So my "ideas" on the English in Milwaukee, would have been family related, also English, Welsh, and Irish, were the working class, laborers, miners, "train engineers", They all had a part of building early Milwaukee. My relation seemed "partial" to the Germans, they seem to be the only ones my Englishmen married!

The historian and geographer, John Gurda, talks and writes about Riverwest at the time it was first built. It was an area with a grocery or tavern on almost any corner. He says that the neighborhood started off as German, and by the turn of the 19th century, was about 50 % Polish, and the other 50 % German. The Germans were there because the East side English and Scots wouldn't let them buy in. The late Victorian mansions were built especially along Prospect avenue , on the East side going north from downtown, and along Grand Avenue, now Wisconsin, going west from downtown. Few survive, the Pabst Mansion, the former home of the Archbishop, being one of the best. Interestingly, many of the Riverwest homes were built in stages. After the main floor, a few years later when there was more money and maybe more kids, the second floor would be built, then sometimes even a third or dormer floor above, a few years after that. One of the largest Riverwest homes, a corner brick house on a larger than usual lot, actually went thru 6 raisings, as I recall the story. By the way, a large part of Milwaukee is still of German or Polish descent. It's been said that many of the public grade schools had the first several years of classes only in German in the pre - WW1 years. Sometimes still today on the near South side and down towards the Basilica ( the gold dome came up on a flatbed train car from Chicago ) you can still hear three non - English languages spoken in three blocks. This is an area that my family living in around the turn of the century. Both of my great-grandmothers were widowed early in life. On my grandfather's side, Maria Haissig lived at the top of the bank of the river. She was a midwife for many years. On my grandmother's side, Anna Bus(c)h ran Bush's Boathouse opposite the swimming schools. Obviously, she lived on the bank of the river, renting boats and selling bait. My mother was sent to help her grandmother in the summer, and among her duties was to fish the dead minnows out of the bucket. She never care for fish. She also nearly drowned when she fell in the river and on the way down for the third time was pulled out by her hair. Grandma Bush did not speak English. This is the family lore. When my mother and aunt were alive, I tried to get more recollections from them to no avail. Some time in the fifties the Journal did an article about the swimming schools and Bush's. It was in the Green Sheet, if anyone cares to hunt. When I was a child I used to visit my great aunt and uncle (Bush side), Fred and Lou Eichstedt, who lived on Humboldt Ave. in lower flat they rented. I can't think of the address, but it was in that area where there are two houses, one behind the other. It was something like to blocks south of Gordon Park. My aunt and I walked up there many a summer afternoon (before AC). I can remember the ragman coming up the alley with a horse and wagon, calling out for rags and tin and such. Also there was a small drug store (I think)called Chet's about a block or so to the south on the northeast corner. This has been a memory test.
