William Thomas Mountford was born in Burzlam, England, Dec.18, 1841. He emigrated to America with his parents, sisters, and brothers when he was six years of age. The family lived at old Fort Winnebago in Columbia county for two years following their arrival in Wisconsin. They moved to the Mountford farm in the town of Moundville, Marquette County now owned by George Mountford, son of the deceased. He was married to Sarah Ethelyn Cross, Aug. 27, 1870. This union was blessed with eight children-three sons and five daughters-all of whom are living to mourn the loss of a loving father, with the exception of Joseph, who died at the age of 25 years. After a lingering and painful illness, Mr. Mountford calmly fell asleep in Jesus, Nov. 18, 1930. Besides his widow, he leaves a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Martin, who is nearly 94 years old. The funeral services for this highly respected pioneer, held at the old home and at Moundville church, conducted by Rev. J.W. Harris of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Reedsburg, was largely attended. Now haven retaineth husband and father; Earth the broken empty casket keeps, But the sunbeams will love to linger Where our sainted dear one sleeps. Marianne175@aol.com
