I just discovered that I not only have a Mitchell family that used to live in the area but a Diamond family too. Daniel Diamond and his wife Frances H. (Cotter). One of their sons was James William Diamond, born 1870. I don't have any idea how long the Mitchell's were in Indian Sands/Lands but they immigrated in 1848 and show up on the Marquette County 1850 census. From your description the area sounds beautiful!
