    1. Locating Posen Place names
    2. Daryl Weishaar
    3. Joanie Ingraham's posting is correct. If you wish to locate places directly a good site is www.jewishgen.org/shtetlseeker/ . It is especially good for locating small villages not on the available maps. You need an approximate idea where a village might be. A first step is to obtain the coordinates of a nearby larger village or city. Using GPS the site also provides you with a map. German place names have been changed to Polish, but many north Posen locations still retained their Polish name at the time our ancestors left. For example, Kolmar County was still Kr. Chodziesen until the railroad came through. Most Posen ancestors were gone by then. Chrustowo, an ancestry location found on the LDS microfilms, was Chrustowo in the 1830s. You have to pick the right one out of 7 possibilities, obviously the one in the Usch/Chodziesen kirchenkreis.

    2. Norm & Joan C. Ingraham
    3. Sending inquiries on place names in Prussia to the Posen List is a very good way to find answers. James Birkholz, the list administrator and many other active researchers throughout the world often offer much clarity on place names as they existed and as they have been changed as well as insight into the area and / or town or village. Questions can be directed to Posen-L@rootsweb.com or visit the web site at: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Crete/1311/PosenLEntryPg.html Joanie Ingraham P.S. The people on this list are familiar with East and West Prussian place names, but the majority of immigrants to the Marquette, Adams, Green Lake and Waushara area came out of the Posen Province of Prussia. Another good resource is Brian Podoll's book, "Prussian Netzelanders and Other German Immigrants in Green Lake, Marquette & Waushara Counties, Wisconsin."

    3. I had a request for help from a researcher recently and thought the following might also be of interest to those on this mailing list: The University of Wisconsin has on their website a fully scanned copy of Atlas des Deutschen Reichs [Atlas of the German Empire] by Ludwig Ravenstein (Leipzig: Bibliographisches Institut, 1883) <http://www.library.wisc.edu/etext/ravenstein/#Overview>. It is a good resource, but be forewarned, the pages seem to load very slowly. Another site that may be of value to you, in your searches for Prussian and German place names, is Kartenmeister (www.kartenmeister.com) a database of Prussian place names (including both German and Polish place names). There is also a resource on the Marquette County pages for those who are somewhat new to Prussian genealogy, written by Daryl Weishaar and myself: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wimarque/prusinfo.html We do not claim to know everything there is to know about German genealogy but have tried to produce a brief "Prussia 101" overview to help you in your search. At the end of the article a number of helpful resources are listed to assist you in learning more about Prussian history and geography. Joan Coordinator Adams Co. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: ACHILLES CROWELL BOWDEN SMART SOULE Classification: Death Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/3EC.2ACE/578 Message Board Post: Gone to the Great Beyond A. C. Achilles, one of the most respected and honored residents of the town of Almond, passed away at his home Saturday, Jan. 12, 1902. His illness commenced about two weeks before his death with cold and pleurisy, which later developed into pneumonia. Born in Potton, Canada, May 30, 1824, he became the husband of Drusilla Traver in 1849, and removed to Wisconsin in 1852, settling on the farm in Almond, where he has continually resided since, and where his death occurred. His wife passed away May 5, 1894. The children born to Mr. and Mrs. Achilles numbered eight, three dying in infancy. Two daughters, Miss Ella and Mrs. Hannah L. Bowden, and a son, Ezra Achilles, also preceded their father. The children remaining are Mrs. Emma J. Soule, of the town of Almond, and Mrs. Almina E. Smart, of this place [Princeton]. Mrs. Soule, who lives on the old homestead, and Mrs. Smart gave him loving care during his last illness. He was conscious to the last and ready and willing to enter! the Great Beyond. When a young man he united with the Methodist church and in that faith lived and died. He became a member of the Masonic fraternity at Plover, Wisconsin, and afterward transferred his membership to Plainfield Lodge. Mr. Achilles possessed great kindliness of heart and was conscientious to a degree, being one of the few who never made an enemy, and will be greatly missed, especially among the residents on the Portage road. The funeral occurred Sunday, many of the friends and the Masons of Plainfield going to the house at one o'clock and escorting the remains to the Almond M. E. Church, where Rev. Coffeen preached an excellent sermon, and the Masons conducted the beautiful ritualistic ceremony at the grave. ---------------------------- Alvaro C. Achilles died Saturday January 11, 1902 in the 78th year of his age. Mr. Achilles was born in Canada East, in May, 1924, his parents being citizens of the United States, his grandfather having been a soldier under our flag in the Revolutionary war. The years of his childhood and early manhood were spent in Canada where he married. In 1851 he went to California, going around Cape Horn. After a year or two spent in the mines he returned home via the isthmus, and in 1855 moved to Wisconsin and settled upon the farm upon which he continued to live until death called him. He was the father of eight children, three of whom died in childhood. His wife and son, Ezra C. and daughters, Ella L. and Mrs. Geo. G. Crowell, died in recent years so that he is survived by only two daughters, Mrs. H.A. Soule of Almond and Mrs. J.M. Smart of Plainfield. Mr. Achilles was a man of sterling integrity, honest, loyal and true in all the walks of life and his wise counsel and sound advic! e will be sadly missed by relatives and friends alike. He was buried Sunday afternoon from the M. E. Church by the Plainfield Masonic lodge of which he had long been a member, Rev. D. B. Coffen preaching the funeral sermon. The pallbearers were his neighbors and friends: H. G. Smith, A. D. Rogers, Joseph Springer, and C. D. Wood. ---------------------------- I DO NOT KNOW EXACTLY THE DATES OF THESE OBITS, BUT I HAVE THE ORIGINAL CLIPPINGS. THE DATES IN THE ARTICLES ARE PROBABLY GOOD ENOUGH. I AM RELATED TO THIS FAMILY THROUGH THE SMARTs. CONTACT ME IF YOU ARE RELATED TOO. THANKS! John Ribar john@ribar.org

    3. Deborah I have to say that the early plat maps - circa 1900 show the roads as they existed at that time, but I have never thought about the road builders. I know there was a distinction from early on between state roads and local roads. And funding, even way back then was provided by the state (or split between state and county) for the state roads and county and local municipalities and townships were responsible for their roads. If you find an answer, please publish it on the list. I would be interested and I'm sure others would be too.
