    1. Genealogy Scam Alert

    3. Hi Everyone: The old genealogy scam is back. www.genseekers.com Behind the password protection are links to the free genealogy on-line. There is no content of their own. In order to get the "5-day free trial" you have to surrender a credit card or bank account number. You have to cancel within 5 days or you get dinged. Guess what? The cancellation e-mail bounces. Does this surprise you? One person who recently fell for the come-on had his/her account dinged not once, but twice. It is time to remind folks on your state and county mailing lists about these scoundrels. It has been a couple of years since we have mentioned this. Permission is granted to pass this on.

There is both a Lutheran and a Catholic church there. There is also a St. John's Lutheran Church and cemetery located in Crystal Lake Township of Marquette County. So, you are on the right track.

But now I am very confused. I assumed the church I was looking for was St. John's Lutheran Church in Montello, but now I am not so sure. I saw cemetery records on rootsweb for my gg and ggg grandparents whom are said to be buried in St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery in the Crystal Lake township. I was assuming this cemetery was affiliated with St. John's Lutheran Church in Montello, am I correct in my assumption? The church records I am looking for would be from the later 1800's, does anyone know then what church I would be looking at finding them in? By the way Dave thank you for the pastor's email I appreciate it. Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

We communicated off list. There is also a St. John's Lutheran Church located in Princeton, which have records going back to abt. 1865 for births (I have access to those records), as well as confirmations, marriages and deaths. With St. John the Baptist Church in Princeton, which is Catholic, I do not know if you can obtain information from the church or if you have to go through the Arch Diocese. I am under the impression that it is the latter. The Lutheran Church is open to have their old records viewed, but due to the age of some of the books, some churches are putting records on computer. I hope that the day doesn't come when they close the records. They hold a huge amount of information about our ancestors that cannot be obtained anywhere else. I mainly wanted to clarify the fact that the two churches mentioned are in Princeton, not Montello.

St. John's Lutheran was formally organized in 1878; prior to that year, Montello area families had been served by Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Town of Mecan...until 1881 the St. John's records were co-mingled with the records of St. John's at Princeton. (p104) Missionaries served the Catholic population until the first church building was built in 1856 in Montello (p144), so records probably begin after that, though it would be typical if the earliest records are either lost or record-keeping was sparse, since the first Catholic families were served by itinerant missionaries who visited the area. You might try writing to the churches with a SASE and ask whether records are available and if they would check them for you, for a donation to their church. It is also possible the records have been transferred to a church archives, and they could provide the contact information needed. The Historical Stroll through churches book is still available for purchase through the Marquette County UW-Extension Office, as of late summer 2002. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/3EC.2ACE/639.2 Message Board Post: As Joe Chase's reply points out, I do not know if Stephanie is asking about St. John's Lutheran or St. John the Baptist Cartholic Church, both of which are in Montello. On the assumption that it might be St. John the Baptist Catholic, I'll reply with what little I know about its records. I'm sure there are others who have more, and more up-to-date, information, and I encourage them to reply too. There are probably others who would be interested in knowing about this too. First, I have a copy of a history of this congregation, published in 1926, which was the parish's 75th anniversary year. It says nothing about the church's records of births, deaths, marriages, or first communions. It does say the parish's first resident priest came in 1862, so it is unlikely there are records earlier than that. Prior to that, Catholic settlors were served by priests who visited Montello from nearby parishes. The book says the first Catholic settlers in Montello were Antonius Quantius and his wife and two children. Second, I visited the church and used its records for family history research in about 1974. I cannot easily find my notes from the records, but I remember for sure that they went back at least as far as 1870 for deaths. The records were then kept in a metal cabinet in a building located behind the church. They were in one or more large register books of the type used by most churches to record births, marriages, etc. It is possible that these records have since been transferred to a diocesan archives office. I'm sure the best first step is to call the church and ask. I hope that others who have more knowledge than I do will reply.

The Umberger's, providing they were not adopted or something, we related. That's why I was interested in the name 'Samuel'. I was hoping one of your Samuel's sons was named Samuel or related to my Umbarger line. Since you say his wife was born 1844 (I think you said that, hee hee), they would be of the age of my Samuel's parents. He was born March of 1863/1864. I see you listed their children and none of the names are Samuel. There's always the possibility of a connection, could be your Samuel was an uncle or cousin, who knows, but at this point I still can't make a connection. Do you know where your Samuel Umbarger came from, even a hint of the area, even though you don't know his parents names? Birthdate, Birthplace, etc. DNA has proved my Samuel to be an Umbarger/Umberger (He spelled his name Umberger, but his son spelled it Umberger). So according to the DNA Y-Chromesome Male t! est, he is of the Male Umberger line, not by his mother. In otherwords, his father 'was' an Umbarger. I have kept you in my info, and will keep you in mind.

Here is a little something I have on Nancy Mrs. Mary (Rowley) Umbarger, even before the death of her soldier husband was called upon to provide for her children. What she accomplished proves her to be a woman of remarkable perseverance and force of character. She was born in 1844 of sturdy Pennsylvania stock. While her husband was in the army she purchased on credit a yoke of oxen, placed her children in the wagon, (Harlton being two years old) and wielding the whip herself started for Fort Dodge, Iowa. Under her rights as a soldier's wife she filed on one hundred and sixty acres in Pocahontas county, Iowa, which became hers in her own name on the death of her husband. On this western homestead this remarkable woman was able to care for her children, manage a farm and go to school in order to prepare herself to teach, which she did for thirty Y ears in Iowa and Washington. In 1883 she heard that a brother whom she had not seen for thirty years was at La Conner, Washington, and there she went, leaving her boys,! then grown, in charge of the Ioas farm. She found her brother and remained in Washington, teaching first near La Conner, then opening the first school at Avon. She was quite successful in land speculation. In 1888 she married James McCain, an ex-soldier, who died in 1891. She lived with his stepchildren until the estate was settled and then moved back to Avon and stayed there until failing health forced her to return to her son Harlton's home, remained there until her death. NOTE: I believe the brother that is referred to here is John Rowley, as he is listed also in the Skagit County, Washington Article as a gold miner

    3. Hello Everyone, The past three weeks have been busy ones for the Marquette County site, with the following new additions: CONTRIBUTOR Daryl Weishaar transcribed the 1880 census of Newton Township. Thank you Daryl, from all of us! Transcription has also been completed of the 1895 Wisconsin State Census of Town of Harris and Harrisville Township, and the Town of Montello. We've done our best but if you spot an error on a census page, please let Joan know so it can be corrected. Added the biographies of Lewis J. Roberts, Nelson Seely, Horace Goodell, Horace Moulton and Loftus Forbes to the 1890 County History Biographies collection at http://www.rootsweb.com/~wimarque/cohist.html. If you would like to add your ancestor's biography, or volunteer to help type a few pages of biographies, contact Joan who will be elated to put you to work typing. Added three old settler articles from the Oxford Times in 1915, written by Mrs. John Bennett (nee Russell), Mrs. Frank Abbott (nee Kling) and Ed Myers. Look for these in the 1915 newspaper articles section: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wimarque/manewsart1915.html If anyone wants a photocopy of a newspaper article found on the Marquette Co site in the newspaper articles section, contact Joan, who has paper copies on file. 1. James GRANT, Sr., 1840 - 1915
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: GRANT, HARVEY, McLEOD, PIKE Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/3EC.2ACE/638 Message Board Post: From the Oxford Times, Thursday July 8, 1915, Page 1 James GRANT, Sr., died suddenly of heart failure last Thursday afternoon at about 2:30 o'clock on his farm north of this village. At noon he ate his dinner as usual after which he mowed hay a short distance form the house. At 2:30 someone of the family missed Mr. Grant from the seat of the mower and after an investigation he was found a short distance away apparently dead. Dr. Riley was summoned and after an examination stated that the cause of his death was due to heart trouble. James Grant, Sr., was born at Fort Edwards, N. Y., May 3, 1840. He was united in marriage to Julia A. McLeod at South Granville, N. Y., March 11, 1860. After living at Fort Edwards seven years they moved to the farm north of Oxford where they have continuously made their home. To this union were born seven children, all of whom, with their mother, are left to mourn the loss of their father and husband. He is also survived by a brother, Zack Grant, and a sister, Mrs. Luther Pike, both residents of Oxford. Mr. Grant was a loving husband and father, a man of good character and was respected by all his friends and acquaintances. He was a great church worker and with his wife united in Christian fellowship with the M. E. Church and was always seen at church when his health and weather conditions permitted. The funeral was held from his home Saturday afternoon, Rev. Foss of Menominee Falls officiating. Interment was made in the village cemetery. The pallbearers, Halsey Pike, Lewis Grant, Ransom Pike, Fred, Harvey and Ed Grant are nephews of the deceased.
