Surnames: BURGER, BURNSTAD, BYERS, LINDSAY, SMITH, VROMAN Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/3EC.2ACE/644 Message Board Post: From the Oxford Times [Oxford, Marquette Co. WI], Thursday October 9, 1913, Page 1 Arthur Smith died last Thursday morning and the funeral was held from the Presbyterian church at 10:30 a.m. Sunday morning under the auspices of the Masonic Lodge. Rev. W. C. Krebs delivered an impressive sermon and the Masonic ritual burial service was used at the grave. Arthur Smith was born at Herkimer county, New York, Feb. 26, 1827. He moved with his family to Branford, Canada when five years of age and resided there about twenty-five years. During that time he was united in marriage in September 1852 to Mary A. Lindsay. The two oldest sons, Arthur C. and Theodore were born there. They removed from there to a farm one mile south of the village where they resided for some time and then he traded the farm for the Oxford hotel which he conducted for only a short time when at the beginning of the war he traded it for another farm four miles east of the village. They resided here until twenty-three years ago when he retired and moved with his family to the village where he has since made his home. He enlisted in the 48th Wisconsin regiment in 1864 and served eleven months until the end of the war. Mrs. Smith died May 3, 1911. Eleven children were born to them, five of whom survive and were present at the funeral as follows: Arthur C. of Burnstad, North Dakota, Theodore and Mrs. T. Byers of Oxford, Mrs. Cora Burger of Mather, Wisconsin, and Mrs. Maud Vroman who lives a short distance west of the village. Mr. Smith joined the Masonic lodge Oct. 31, 1857 and has been a faithful and honored member ever since. He was at the time of his death the oldest surviving member of the Oxford lodge. He leaves to mourn their loss besides his children a sister living in Pennsylvania, thirty-two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Nellie Smith of this place. Mr. Smith was a man of high moral character and ideals. He was kind to his family, a good neighbor and a friend to everybody. His principle was always to help a worthy cause and not to condemn a fellow man until he had proven to his own satisfaction that he deserved it. Taken altogether we can conscientiously say that Mr. Smith was a model man and one of our most highly respected citizens whose presence will be greatly missed. We join with the whole community in sympathizing with the relatives in their bereavement.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/3EC.2ACE/642 Message Board Post: Looking for information on Hannah Garrison Tompkins Spore (not certain of spelling). She is said to have been b. abt 1797 and died in 1850 in Berlin, Wisconsin. She was first married to Nathaniel Tompkins before 1817 in NY (possibly Westchester or Otsego County) and bore him several children: Samuel Merritt Tompkins b. abt 1821 in Otsego County, NY; William B. Tompkins abt 1817; and Abram Tompkins b. abt 1823. Nathaniel is said to have died in 1827, after which Hannah is said to have married a Henry Spore, who she bore two children, Wesley and Anna Spore. I don't know when she is supposed to have moved west, I presume it was with her second husband. I haven't had any luck in finding the family in the census. Her son, Samuel Tompkins, is said to have lived with his aunt and uncle after his father's death. I don't know if all of her sons by Nathaniel stayed in NY or not. William Tompkins is said to have died in NY. Abram Tompkins may have ended up in Washington State. Any information on Hannah or Henry Spore or their children would be welcome as it might provide a further lead. My line descends from Hannah's son, Samuel, by her first husband. Thanks, Karen Dutton

I am only through my former marriage. He still has great-grandsons, Ronnie and Paul who live there (Paul is still on the original Wade farm) and nurmerous great-great grandchildren. Two great-grandsons, Stuart and Neale live in California. And there is a great-granddaughter, Ethel, in another state. Both Ronnie and Paul have done some genealogy on the Wade family. Sylvester lived in Portage for awhile when he was older and William took over the farm as I understand it. Mabel's notes say that eventually their health was bad enough they had to give up their Portage home and move in with children Just noticed that some of the information I have was written by you. I go back to Moundville each spring to be with an aunt. She and the Wades are friends, live on the same road, all go to the same church etc. etc. I can get addresses and telephone #s If you are interested. The Wades are basically all buried in the church cemetery and I have pictures of some of the tombstones. A great aunt of mine, Mabel Jones kept small notebooks of family histories of the area that might have some additional facts if you haven't seen them. Let me know if I can help. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Block, Reynders, Vandrey / Fandrey, Grulke / Gruhlke, Lohrcke Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/3EC.2ACE/501.3.1 Message Board Post: I went back to my grandmother's original handwritten notes on the Block family. Some of it was mistranscribed from her notes. I find that Charlie Block (Minnie's brother) had children by the name of Earl, Mary Rose and Kathryn. Charlie married Katherine. Minnie was listed as having married Dr. George Reynders (no mention of a second husband); her children were listed as Alfred, Minnie, Edward and Patty. I don't know why the name Patty was included; maybe they had a fourth child who didn't survive long? Maybe Patty was a child of Alfred, Minnie or Edward. Or perhaps my grandmother was given incorrect information. The notes are clearly not meant to be the finish copy of the information she was gathering, so more research is needed to verify it. I can scan her handwritten notes and email them to you if you would like. Also I've done some research on Minnie's mother (Rose Fandrey) and father (Frederick William Block) and found the following in LDS records: Friedrich Wilhelm Block was christened Dec. 26, 1828. The gravestone in Marquette County gives his birth year as 1828. Friedrich's parents were listed as Christoph Block and Catharina Lohrcke. [Evangelisch, Battrow, Westpreussen record] LDS record shows Friedrich Wilhelm Block married Rosina Vandrey on Jan. 22, 1854 in Lobsens record [from LDS Patron Sheets in batch #8327623 - Lobsens, Posen, Prussia Evan. Church Record] -- the marriage record says Friedrich was age 25 and his wife 19 My grandmother had one handwritten note that said a maternal grandmother had the last name of Gruhlke. I found a record that may be Rosina's parents: An LDS record (SN#3890-8, p. 725 in Lobsens, Posen, Prussia MF #C99919-1 re: 1840-1874, p.725) shows Paul Vandrey and Justine Grulke had a son named Johann Friedrich Vandrey (b. Feb. 1, 1841). [I understand that the letter "V" and "F" are often interchangeable in the translation between early Prussia and English.] Paul Vandrey (age 32) married Justine Grulke (age 26) on Feb. 9, 1834 [LDS Lobsens, Posen, Prussia marriage record - LDS Patron Sheets Batch #8327623] -- I haven't found Rosina' Vandrey's birth record yet Wilhelmine Block, b. July 31, 1859, christened Aug. 10, 1859, daughter of Friedrich Wilhelm and Rosine Vandrey [NOTE: this record spells Rosine with "e" while other records show her name spelled Rosina with "a" at end] [LDS record from Lobsens, Posen, Prussia Microfilm batch #C999190-1, record #-07004-8, p. 97] Johann August Block, b. Aug. 16, 1857, christened Aug. 30, 1857, son of Friedrich Block and Rosine Fandry [this time record spells Fandry with "F" instead of "V" -- MF batch #C999190-1, record #06224-6, p. 97] Ottilie Emilie Block, b. Oct. 22, 1861, christened Oct. 1861, daughter of Friedrich Wilhelm Block and Rosine Vandrey [LDS MF #C999190-1, record #0789707, pg. 97) [I believe this is Minnie's sister "Delia" since Ottilie is the name they used on their immigration paperwork too] My grandmother's handwritten note said Friedrich and Rosine came to America with their children at Castle Garden, NY, July 28, 1870. In "Germans to America, Vol. 24", I found Friedrich Ploch (age 41), Rosine (age 35), Wilhelm (age 15), August (age 12), Wilhelmine (age 10), Ottilie (age 8), Eduard (age 6), Theodor (age 4), August (age 2) and Caroline (age .03 infant). They came to America through Bremen on the "Marco Polo" ship on July 28, 1870 (which matches my grandmother's note). Apparently immigration clerks misspelled Block. The records I found in Prussia clearly spell the name BLOCK.
