Surnames: DENVER, MCLANE, QUERNS Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/3EC.2ACE/708 Message Board Post: From the Montello Express, 06 February 1925 Mary Ann Denver was born in Massachusetts on December 23, 1831, and died at her home in Buffalo, on January 25, 1925. She spent her youth in the Eastern States and there was married to James McLane. A few years after their marriage they moved to Marquette County, Wisconsin, where they spent the remainder of their lives. To this union were born six children, two dying in infancy, and Nellie who died at the age of twenty-five, and the three surviving children; Mrs. Sam Querns, and James and John, all living in Marquette County. Mr. McLane died in 1873, leaving his wife in the care of four little children. Her life has been swept by the winds of sorrow, suffering and adversity, but her Christian faith has provided her with strength to meet them, and she had looked forward wth joy to the final release from earthly tribulation. Mother, we cannot wish you back again; We know you are happier there, In the land of God's anointed, Free from earthly pain and care. But we have such pleasant memories, Reaching back to childhood days, When we followed where you led us, 'Til we reached life's highway. Then we knew what you had suffered, In those sufferings of your own, And we're glad that you will reap reward, At the foot of the Great White Throne.

    1. Pehlke / help finding asylum
    2. My great-grandfather, Henry Pehlke, born Sept. 1858 had an older sister named Augusta Pehlke. Augusta was born in 1856. According to the 1870 census, the family was living in Shields Twp. in Marquette Co. (Augusta was 14 years old at that time.) Family tales have it that Augusta died in an asylum, but no one knows what year. The family is still residing in Shields Twp. according to the 1880 census, minus Augusta. So, somewhere between 1870 & 1880, she was supposedly admitted to the asylum, and very well could have died within any of those years. How do I go about finding out what asylums were in existence at the time? How do I find out when she was admitted? She's not buried with the rest of the family in Eau Claire Co., so I would also like to find out where she could possibly be buried. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Angela

    3. Hello Everyone, Hope you had a wonderful holiday season. Are you ready for some relaxing and productive days in front of the computer, hunting for those ancestors? November and December brought many additions to our site, so stop on by with a mug of hot cider and stay awhile. Here's what's new: Cemeteries: Added Paulina Schachenwald Schwanke's obit to the Newton Township cemetery file and tombstone photos. Census: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wimarque/cenplacesm.html The 1860 Springfield township census is now available, my big project for the site for the past couple of months. County History Biographies: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wimarque/cohist.html CONTRIBUTOR Suzanne Folk sent three more county history biographies: Alexander Paterick, Ansel Shaler and Chandler Wheelock. I typed two more of the biographies, for Henry Hubbard Eaton and Chase Sargent. I would welcome more help (yours!) with this typing project, if you can contribute your ancestor's biography from the 1890 Green Lake, Marquette and Waushara County History or would be willing to type a few pages snail-mailed to you, please contact Joan. Historical Markers: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wimarque/histmkrs.html NEW CONTRIBUTOR Roberta Johnson sent a photo and text of the Russell Flats historical marker. Newspaper Articles: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wimarque/marqnews.html CONTRIBUTOR Phylis has been creating quite a gift for all of us, combing through multiple years of the Montello Express newspapers and typing the local news items. You'll find everything from township election results, house fires and jury lists to births, deaths and marriages. CONTRIBUTOR Lois H. sent some local news items gleaned from a 1906 Montello Express. I typed and added these three newspaper articles: a jury list from 1922, the 35 persons received into membership at the Westfield Presbyterian Church in 1922 and the 1923 Westfield High School Honor Roll. Photo Album: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wimarque/phoalbumm.html Added a photo of the Christof Schrank family to the phtoo album, sent by NEW CONTRIBUTOR Fredrick Schrank. Thank you to our contributors and volunteers, and Happy New Year to all, Joan Coordinator Adams Co. WIGenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~wiadams/adams.htm and Marquette Co. Surnames: GOETZKE, KRUGER, MILBREIT, WAGNER Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/3EC.2ACE/703 Message Board Post: From the Central Union [Westfield, Marquette County, Wisconsin], March 31, 1922, Page 1 John Wagner was born in Germany January 18, 1835, and died in Westfield, Wisconsin, at the home of his son, Gustave, March 24, 1922, at the ripe age of 87 years, 2 months and 5 days. About a year ago he suffered a slight stroke of apoplexy of which he never wholly recovered and last Friday morning he succumbed to general disability. In 1865 he was united in the bonds of holy matrimony with Julia Goetzke. To this happy union three sons and three daughters were born, of which one daughter and his life companion preceded him in death. In 1868 he came to America with his family, and first located at Milwaukee, after a five year stay in the metropolis he came to Marquette county, Wisconsin, locating on a farm near Lawrence where he endured the hardships of a pioneer life. About 25 years ago his wife changed the temporal and mortal things with the eternal and immortal and since then he has made his home with his son Gustave, who with his wife, Mrs. Gus Wagner, have rendered a most! valiant service to Father Wagner. He was of a quiet, unassuming nature and disposition, he had many friends, for in his life he always tried to apply the Golden Rule. He was a lover of God's Word and His service, and as long as his physical strength permitted, he was a regular attendant at the services of St. John's Church. He leaves to mourn his departure, 3 sons: Emil, Gustave and John, all of Westfield, 2 daughters: Mrs. Jul. Kruger of Loyal, Wisconsin, and Mrs. Aug. Milbreit of Neillsville, Wis., and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from the home thence to St. John's Evangelical church where a large concourse had gathered to show their last respect to the departed. Rev. Geo. H. Scheible officiating in both the German and English language. The remains were laid to rest in the Lawrence cemetery.

His name was spelled John Yonkie on this census. The head of the household was Gotlip H. Zarbrook (age 53), and John was listed as Gotlip's father-in-law. Others living in that household were Augusta J. (Gotlip's wife of 32 years as of 1910, age 50), son Alfred (age 17) and daughter Manda (age 13). John's age is given as 74, which fits his birth year of 1825; the 1900 census said he was age 69 and born in 1831 -- so we have a discrepancy here. Jean B.

He was my ancestor, and I didn't know who his wife was or where he was born. I recently found John on the 1900 Federal Census in Packwaukee, Marquette Co. His name was spelled John Yankee on this census. He was listed as being Gotlieb Zarbock's father-in-law (age 69 at the time, born Nov. 1856 in Germany). John was living with his daughter (Gusta - age 41) at the time plus Gusta and Gotlieb's children Gust (age 19), Bertha (age 17), Gusta (age 16), Minnie (age 10), Alfred [I think - this name is hard to read] (age 7), Manda (age 3). Also living in this household was George Street (in-law, age 22) and George's wife and Gotlieb's daughter Emma (age 20 or 21 -- says 20 on form with the number 1 above the 0). This census shows that Gusta (John Jahnke's daughter) immigrated in 1872 from Germany. Gusta and Gotlieb were married 22 years at the time this census was taken. Jean B.

She settled down in the town of Newton and was married to Mr. Schwanke October 18, 1871. Nine children were born to them, six of whom are living. Mrs. Schwanke was a faithful member of the German Lutheran church of the Town of Newton for more than 50 years. Many were the hardships she had to bear in her life, she was a sufferer for many years being sick and the last 14 months of her life she had been confined to her bed, where she needed care day and night, and her children took wonderful care of her, her daughter, ida, who was with her during her last sickness and with loving hands cared for her mother through many nights of suffering. Her death came on Monday morning March 20, 1922 at the age of 68 years, 4 months and 4 days. On October 18, 1922[sic] and namely just five months before Mrs. Schwanke passed away, was the Golden Wedding anniversary day, of her and Mr. Schwanke's marriage, and their children, and relatives from Chicago gathered and came to honor them on this occasion. The funeral was held on March 23 from the Newton church and her body laid to rest in the cemetery of that church. The services were conducted by the Rev. Meyer and preaced as his text from Revelations Chapter 7 verses 9 - 17. The church was crowded, many friends and relatives being present, and their were many beautiful floral offerings. She will be greatly missed, she was a good true Christian, and a loving wife and mother, and always willing to do for and help everybody. Left to mourn her death are her husband and daughter Ida at home, her son Ludwig in North Fond du Lac, sons Arthur and Ewald residing in Newton, two daughters, Mrs. L. Polinske of Westfield, and Mrs. Paul Gilgan of Crystal Lake and a host of sorrowing relatives and friends. Those present at the funeral from out of town were her brother-in-law, Conrad Schwanke and wife of Chicago, and sister-in-law, Mrs. Hulda Schwachenwald of Cleveland, Ohio. One more farewell has been spoken One more throbbing heart at rest One more cherished link is broken Dear mother dwells among the blest But we know she's waiting for us And so patiently will wait, Till the day when we shall greet her And enter too, the pearly gate There in the land of pure delight, On that sweet celestial shore, Clothed in robes of purest white We shall meet to part no more.
