Dear Lucy and fellow listers, We are interested in Marinette saloons and boarding houses, since Tom's great-grandparents had one in the 1880's, probably also 1890's. Later it was owned by a son-in-law, Alphonse O. HEBERT. Starting with the 1885 Marinette City Directory, we found Israel BOYER listed as proprietor of the Central House, southeast corner of John Street and Vine Street. There were 20 other hotels listed in Marinette that year, and 29 hotels listed in Menominee that same year. Several other BOYERs resided at the Central House, but worked elsewhere: George, Israel Jr., Jeddie. The one that currently interests us is Maguire/Maquise BOYER, who though he resided at the Central House, worked as a bartender at A. O. HEBERT. Although we know this Alphonse O. HEBERT later married one of Israel Sr's daughters, Alvina/Vinna BOYER, (her 1st husband was Alfred DULUDE/DELUDE and her 3rd husband was Frank PELKEY), we never looked up his name when we were going thru the city directories. When you wrote about a saloon on Main Street, we realized we had never even looked up Alphonse in any of the city directories... Maybe his saloon was on Main Street--we really don't know! So, does any of this coincide with your research? We know there have to be other descendants around somewhere. Thanks for the reminder: we have a lot more research to do! We'd be happy to exchange info. Also, I decided to post a query about Marinette's city directories, which may stir up some help. Good luck, Tom and Barb Glassel
Since the last 8 years Terje Østro have been working on the farm and family books for Nes and Flå in Hallingdal. This is a great work and the work seems to be never finished. Well, he hope to be soon. There is still a lot of details that is needed to be sure of the information given in the books are correct. Since my time here on the list have been the last year or so there is many families I have come over, many of you have written to me asking for help and I have done the best I could. I will be doing that also in the future. I have now more and more background in what I am doing and the time I need to help most of you is limited because the books are written down and most of the information I already have. Details about farms and names in different periods can vary and this is the job I need time on. I want to ask each and everyone of you to write me back and help me to find family members from Nes and Flå parish in Hallingdal that immigrated into USA and Canada. All this information will be handled over to the writer of the "farm and family" books for these two parishes. Many of the families I have got via direct contact and E-mail exchange. But it is just a small part compare to all the ones that went over. Please write me about ANY names and families you know of. Written informations from books are also important. Or send me your information about YOUR family to me and you can be sure it will be made available to Terje Østro and will be in the books that are coming out. The books will contain your information about your family and where they came from here in Nes parish. This need to be soon. The fast we get the information the more will be into the books. Hope to hear from you soon Best regards Steinar Homepage: http://home.sol.no/~steinv Nes parish churchbooks: http://home.sol.no/~steinv/kirke.htm
Hello All, Sorry for the trouble, but some kook sabotaged my e-mail subscriptions to the Rootsweb.com mailing lists. I can still receive postings to my USER683614@AOL.COM box, or here. I also have about a dozen screen names with two other Internet providers, so if those of you who I am helping will e-mail me privately, I'll give them to you. I hope this problem will resolve itself. Hello to the Great State of Wisconsin, I am searching for any information anyone can provide me with regard to the surname TARRANT and FEDEREN. Both families lived in various parts of the state, but spent quite a bit of time in the Minneapolis area. I am searching for PHILIP FEDEREN (1883) and his wife EDITH FEDEREN (1884) and their two children FABIOLA TARRANT (1897) and CECILE TARRANT (1893). They were last known to be in the Twin Cities area in 1944, but their descendants could be anywhere by now. They were relatives of GEORGE A. SHANNON AND ISABELLA (McDonald) SHANNON of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, and their son ROBERT D. SHANNON, who was last known around 1942-44 to be living in Spencer, Iowa. Robert's wife was named JESSE and his children were ANNABELLE and GEORGE, also of Chippewa Falls, WI. Sometime around 1940-45, the family and the germane cousins and step-relatives scattered about the state for an unknown reason, so I'm asking for help from anyone in ANY Wisconsin County. Any information regarding these families or their descendants would be greatly appreciated. Yes, this was posted to every board in Wisconsin because the families scattered and I'm at the point of desperation. It conforms to the guidelines established by RootsWeb, USGenWeb and that awesome upstart ALHN, so it IS NOT considered spam. Take care all. I wish you the best of luck with your own searches. I am a look-up volunteer for obituaries for Marinette. I need the exact date of death. The cost is 25 cents per copy, which is what the library charges, plus postage. The only thing right now is, because of Christmas I'm not doing any until after the first of the year. I have a full time job so don't have time for researching for dates-sorry. A note to Barbara Glassel-My GGGrandparents also came to the Marinette/Menominee area from Malone NY. I had very good luck writing to 2 catholic churches there for a marriage and baptisimal records. They came to Malone from Quebec. Linda L. Loser Peshtigo, WI

Dear Julie, I wish I could help you with your specific question, but unfortunately I don't live close enough to Marinette. I do have a question for you however. Do you know what nationality your LaBOMASCUS might be? I'm curious, because my grandmother, Marinette VIAU GLASSEL, had a nephew, George Patrick WILLIAMS, who married Eva DEBASCUS, (a surname which to me has a similar ending). They may have met in Marinette. My mother told me that George and Eva lived in northern Indiana, "in a Lithuanian settlement," but I don't know when. The only date I have for that branch of the VIAU family, is the birthdate of George Patrick's mother, Margaret VIAU WILLIAMS, which was 23 Dec 1874 in Malone, Franklin Co, NY. Would any particular group still live in a "settlement" in the early 1900's? Your query made me realize that I haven't even figured out where Geo & Eva married, or if they had children, etc., and so I thank you for the reminder. Good luck with your search. I hope somebody can look up your LaBOMASCUS and GRONKE names in the Marinette City Directories-- Regards, Tom Glassel
I am looking for information on the family of Friedrich GRONKE. He and his family apparently came from Charlevoix, MI (I think it's Michigan, the handwriting is very poor); and settled in Marinette in the late 1870s - early 1880s. His daughter Johanna married my gggrandfather, August LABOMASCUS in 1881. I need vital records info on him, his wife, and children. Any help greatly appreciated. Dear Joyce, In the St. Joseph Congregation's burial records (buried in various Marinette area cemeteries), 1 woman is listed which might help you: "VEINES, Agnes b........ d. 6 Jun 1900 / Age 25 / of Fond du Lac / after confinement / buried City Cemetery (could be registered as Agnes Rondeau Loc #83, Woodlawn Cath Cemetery)" [I interpret this to mean that her maiden name was VEINES. Either they are not sure which cemetery she is in, or that the St. Joseph records say City Cem. but the person transcribing the records thinks she is buried under another name in lot 83, Woodlawn Cem.] No other Venne, Vanne, or anything close. There are 4 other Rondeau burials listed, in case that turns out to be a connection, let me know. As to SAUVE, there are 4 males & 2 females: "SAUVE, Chester b........ d. 20 Jun 1889 / Age 4 mos / Son of Francis SAUVE and Marie LEPINE SAUVE, Joseph b........ d. 16 Jan 1901 / Age 22 yrs / Son of Magloire SAUVE / killed in woods accident / buried in Old Cemetery SAUVE, Maglorie b........ d. 15 Feb 1902 / Age ? / Louisville, Canada / husband of M. MATTE / pneumonia / buried in Old Cemetery SAUVE, Maglorie b........ d. 23 Sept 1907 / Age 55 yrs / Louisville, Canada / dropsy / buried in Old Cemetery SAUVE, Maria Elda b........ d. 28 Sept 1891 / Age 2 mos / Dtr of Magloire SAUVE SAUVE, velina (See BOILEAU)>>> BOILEAU, Velina b........ d. 26 Aug 1891 / Age 37 yrs / Wife of Magloire SAUVE" [No cemetery listed for the first one and the last two.] Apparently many of these records were transcribed from the Latin they were written in, by Kris Race of Marinette. They were published by the White Pines Genealogical Society of Marinette-Menominee in 1991. Hope this helps, Barb Glassel
I am working on the surname MERCHANT. My gggrandfather is Calix Merchant who was raised and lived most of his life in Marinette. Jill M. Cordone
I've just subscribed and am working on the surname Vanne as I know it but it could be under Venne or Veine. I'm also trying to find out where Edmond Venne, married to Anna Sauve (Sauvie)? on April 26, 1886, died and is buried. When I was in Coleman, Wisconsin a few years ago, I found an Edmond Venne in the St. Johns Cemetary but it had a birth date of 1875 and that doesn't sound right for a man married in 1886!! Any help would be appreciated. Regards, Joyce Dewey Soares

Hi, I'm new to the list and am searching for SAWYER, PAYANT, and CAYO family from Marinette & Wausaukee area. Specifically, I'm looking for Clofield CAYO..born Clofield PAYANT, daughter of Joseph Alphonse PAYANT & Constance SAWYER, born 1866 in Little River Township. Clofield marries Louis CAYO in 1884 and dies in Wausaukee in 1953. Also, does anyone frequent the Marinette Courthouse to do lookups? Thanks so much, Anne Taylor-Czaplewski Tolland, Connecticut
Looking for info on A.B. IVES who served as an alderman on the Marinette City Council from April 1887 to April 1889. According to the Marinette City Directories for 1885-1889, he resided on Ogden St. He was a superintendant for the Sawyer Goodman Co. Martha
It probably means the St. Joseph Cemetery (the French Catholic Church in early times). This cemetery has no gravestones-a few wooden crosses with no names-and 1 cross with a name that can't be read. There is one other possibility, Woodlawn Cemetery has a catholic section in which there are gravestones of others who belonged to the "French" Church. Records for this cemetery are held at Forest Home Cemetery,Mary St.,Marinette,WI 54143 715-732-5173. They are very helpful there and have a good index Linda.
