Hi All, None of the hotels below are in existance today. The Marinette Hotel is now the site of Best Western. The old Marinette Hotel was torn town in the late 1960's and was replaced with a new Holiday Inn and then was bought out by Best Western. The same for the hotels in Menominee. All those old hotels are gone. The last one...The Menominee Hotel burned to the ground in 1976. As far as I know, there are very few if any pictures of these hotels. I have never seen any myself. Its sad that all this history is lost. I have lived in the Marinette and Menominee area for 35 years and don't remember the Old Marinette Hotel at all, but vaguely remember the Menominee Hotel. In fact, I had just got a job waitressing there about 2 weeks before it burned and my grandmother was a cook in the kitchen. When she heard the Hotel was on fire, the first thing she said was, "Oh, NO! My beautiful homemade rolls are ruined!" Kris In copies of a few Marinette [R.L.Polk & Company's] city directory pages, these hotel and boarding house names came up. Hope somebody can tell us which ones are downtown. Maybe one of the historical societies has some photos of interiors of some of these, the wicker benches sound like something people might remember? Many names on a page were followed by "bds" (boards) & a house number and street name; guess there were a high percentage of people who boarded, possibly with relatives, in private homes which may not have had formal names. 1885: Central House, Israel BOYER, prop.; southeast corner, John & Vine Streets. 1885: Commercial House; Porterfield House; Bruns' Restaurant [bdg. house?]; Dunlap House; First National Hotel; Travelers' Home; Fond du Lac House; Boomhouse; J.A. Van Cleve; Mineau House; M.R.L.Company's Boarding House; N.L. Co.'s Boarding House; J.J. Hubley. 1887: Central Hotel, John & Vine Streets; my notes say there is a list of 21 hotels in Marinette, on page 116, why didn't I copy that page? [Menominee 1887 city dir. lists 29, on pages 104-105.] 1889: Railroad Eating House. 1893-1894: Williams House, on Hosmer Street; Central Hotel (probably being run by Alphonse O. HEBERT, who m. Israel BOYER's dau Alvina BOYER DELUDE in 1893); LeRoy Hotel; Travelers' Home; Exchange Hotel; Wood's Hotel; The Arlington; The Windsor Hotel; Shallman House. 1895-1896: Lumberman's Home; Central Hotel; Exchange Hotel. 1897-1898: Central Hotel; Wood's Hotel; Hotel Marinette. 1901-1902: Central Hotel, Emil DEAN, prop.; Nazaire MOTT. Menominee MI: 1907-1908 [Polk's Dir]: Mary VIAU's Boarding House, 704 Holmes Ave.(Now 13th Ave.) Wish I had time to compile a more complete list, it's kind of fun. ==== WIMARINE Mailing List ==== Marinette County, Wisconsin WIGenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~wimarine ============================== Visit Ancestry's Library - The best collection of family history learning and how-to articles on the Internet. http://www.ancestry.com/learn/library
Posted on: Query Forum for Marinette County, WI Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Wi/Marinette/10604 Surname: Doran, Boyle, Feeney, Walsh, Missos, Veneros ------------------------- Hi Folks This is Jim Doran, formerly of Marinette, Wisconsin, my home town. I am paraphrasing some information here gleaned from the Marinette Centennial Program Booklet 1987. I believe the Hotel you are looking for is the former "Dunlap House" or its successor the "Hotel Marinette" on Dunlap Square in Marinette. This structure was torn down in the late 60's. The space is now occupied by a Best Western Hotel (Previously a Holiday Inn) at 1821 Riverside Drive, in Marinette, across the street from the Stephenson Public Library. I believe the booths in the Hotel were first lined up on the Menominee River side of the Building on the first floor, but I remember it as a lobby area. The northwest corner of Dunlap Square has been Marinett's major hotel location since 1867, when the old Dunlap House was built, named for George Dunlap, a Chicago railroad builder. It was expanded shortly after the railroad reached Marinette in 1871. It was replaced by the new "Hotel Marinette", a three-story brick building opening on August 8, 1895. They were both the most lavish hotels north of Green Bay at the time, and had many noted guests. The other hostelries in the area in the early years were mostly saloons which had rooms upstairs for guests and provided meals, or boarding houses. Here is a quote from the above mentioned Centennial Booklet that describes the dining room in the "Hotel Marinette" in its prime, circa 1900 or so. "The original dining room, later the lobby, had large windows overlooking the river. The high-ceiling room, the uniformed waitresses, fancy menu, wine list and music brought an elegance to Marinette life that impressed even the salesmen and lumber buyers who stayed over the weekends." The Hotel Marinette faltered as an entity in the late 1960's, and was demolished. After a couple of years the City of Marinette successfully negotiated a contract to build a four-story Holiday Inn on the site, since taken over by the Best Western chain. Attended my 40th High School class reunion there two years ago. I have a close connection to downtown Marinette. My family home is only a few blocks from Dunlap Square. My mom's father owned and operated the old Princess Restaurant in downtown Marinette. On my Dad's side the Dorans and Boyles have been in the Marinette/Menominee area since the early 1880's. My memory of Dunlap Square extends to the year 1945, when I was four years old, and the celebration that occurred there at the end of World War II. Just thought I'd update everybody on what's been happening at the Marinette County site. Following is some new data added in March and April: * History and transcription of Calvary Cemetery in Marinette (resulting in 28 new surnames added to the search index). [Thanks to Pat Drees for contributing this data, and to Rita Neustifter for sending her my way!] * List of newspapers serving the county, their dates of establishment and precursors (where available) *Additions to area historical societies and museums, including addresses and phone numbers * New color township map [because it just looks prettier] * I've set up pages for all the pre-1907 vital records indexes (births, deaths, marriages), but I'm going to need volunteers to help me get this data online. Please contact me directly (dhipke@chorus.net) if you have access to the index and would like to help. Thanks! Please be sure to stop by and visit. Your feedback is always welcome.
