Staege Former Assistant Chief of Wausau Fire Department Expired Saturday Evening John L. Staege, who was retired from the Wausau fire department last March on pension after serving for nearly twenty one years, passed away at 6:30 o'clock Saturday evening at his home, 712 Jackson Street. He had been failing in health for more than three years and for the last ten months suffered very much. Funeral services will be conducted at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the St. Stephen's church by the Rev. William Spiegel. Interment will follow in Pine Grove cemetery. The deceased was born June 17, 1864 in Woodland, Wisconsin and had lived in Marathon County for more than fifty years. He was united in marriage with Miss Minnie Haasch in Wausau about thirty one years ago. In October 1898, the deceased entered the Wausau fire department, serving for many years in Engine House No. 1. About ten years ago, he was appointed fourth assistant fire chief with headquarters at Engine House No. 4, where he remained until 1918, when he was transferred to Station No. 3. Surviving are his widow and three children; Miss Vesta Staege of Wausau, John Staege of Rothschild and Leslie Staege of Babcock; two brothers, Albert Staege of Wausau and Gottlieb Staege of Merrill and four sisters; Mrs. Bertha Leise of St. Cloud, MN, Mrs. Johanna Kretlow of Wausau, Mrs. Amelia Montgomery and Mrs. Carrie Jossey of Merrill and And his mother, Mrs. Fredericka Staege of Wausau. Wausau Daily Record Herald Feb 24,1920 Staege Funeral: Funeral services for the late John L. Staege, 712 Jackson Street, were conducted at two o'clock this afternoon at St Stephen's church by the Rev. William Spiegel. Interment was in Pine Grove Cemetery. The pall bearers were William O. Ziebell, Harry Haverson, August Hoertsch, Rudolph Roloff, Robert Schochow and Otto Barthels, members of the Wausau Fire Department, in which the deceased served nearly twenty two years.
