I think that every one of us has cursed out the census enumerators as we have tried to decipher the names they wrote. I am reading a book (which by the way is most interesting) and came on this paragraph, which to me is the best example of why this happened! >From pages 34 and 35, from "A Firestorm at Peshtigo" by Denise Gess and William Lutz "His last name was Lemke, Lem, Lempke, or Lamp, depending on the census takers who spelled by sound, or scribbled out names sloppily, often misinterpreting what the German Immigrants with only a sprinkling of English at their disposal tried to tell them. Sometimes the immigrants deliberately provided misinformation. A mutual mistrust existed between the census takers, and the "foreigners", mostly the result of the immigrant farmers fear that the men who were taking count of the household were also looking to increase the taxes on their land." And by the way, I have been working on indexing some cemeteries in Lincoln County - I have one more to put on line - but the ones I have done can be found on the Miscellaneous section of the Lincoln County web page. Lincoln County Wisconsin WiGenWeb I will be gone for a few days, so if you write and I don't answer, that is why!
