Thank you Sharon and Alice. Looks that that was an easy one for you. Checking my 2002 roadmap of Wisconsin I see that Merrill is not far from Wausau. This makes me suspect I have "the other" William Averill who keeps popping up. I have seen him listed repeatedly on land records filed in Wausau during that era as a "junior," which rules him out. My Wm. A. was not a jr. and was probably in Weyauwega, Waupaca County at that time, 1864 -- though I can't prove it, he was thereat age 13 living with his parents in the 1860 census.
