N.K. NIELSEN, FORMER R-H EDITOR, DIES N. K. Nielsen, 68, 1013 S. Seventh Ave., who was state editor of the Record - Herald Co. for 25 years before his retirement in 1964, died Sunday at 6:45 p.m. He had been in ill health for several months. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Ritter & Deutsch Funeral Home. The Rev. David Buzza, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, will officiate, and burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Tuesday. An Elks Lodge memorial service will be held there at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Mr. Nielsen was born Oct. 7, 1899, in Manitowoc, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Morris Nielsen. On Oct. 12, 1944, in Manitowoc, he married Evelyn Hall, who survives. Mr. Nielsen was a graduate of Lawrence University, Appleton, majoring in economics. He had worked for a Manitowoc newspaper and the Associated Press before coming to Wausau in 1939. As state editor of the Record - Herald he covered all of Marathon County and directed 30 area correspondents. For six years he was editor of the farm section of the paper and covered meetings of the Marathon County Board of Supervisors for nearly 20 years. Mr. Nielsen was active in community, agricultural and political affairs. He served as director, treasurer and vice president of the Marathon County Agricultural Society; secretary and vice president of the Marathon County Fair Board. He was director and secretary when the United Fund was organized; he was twice Red Cross county drive chairman and was county chairman of St. Mary's Hospital fund drive in 1948. A World War I veteran, he was past commander of the Manitowoc American Legion Post. He was a member of Elks Lodge No. 248. Mr. Nielsen was well-known locally as a gardener. He became interested in gardening when he served as information director of the victory garden program during World War II, and continued to enjoy his hobby after retirement. Survivors, besides his wife, include two sisters, Mrs. Reg Worel, Manitowoc, and Mrs. Louis Zwiebel, Greendale. A picture was included in the original obit.
