    1. [WIMARATH-L] Re: When was Brighton Township formed?

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/2EC.2ACE/2731.1 Message Board Post: Brighton has taken many different shapes, and I am not sure if I can make myself clear! In 1870 Marathon County was made up of 11 townships. each township was fairly big, and over the years were made smaller. If you think of squares in the county each a mile square, at the bottom of the county on the west side, was the town of Bergen, consisting of 5 and a little bit more squares. Dicrectly above it was the town of Mosinee, with the same area - 5 + squares. The little extra was because of the Wisconsin River, and the area went to the river. OK - got that? >From 1873 to 1874, the township of Brighton was formed from the western most squares of both of those townships, leaving Bergen and Mosinee with 4 + squares, and Brighton with 2 - one the most southwestern sq. and the sq. right above it. So then, in 1875, Brighton gave the lower half of its acreage to a new township of Spencer, and took the eastern sq. of Mosinee - so now it had two sq. again, but in a horizontal shape, and one square above the southern border of Marathon County. Then on 11-14-84, Brighton was split in town - with the eastern half of the township forming Eau Pleine township and leaving it in the shape it is today. So if you take the county, and divide it into squares, Brighton is on the very western side of the county, and one square up from the bottom. In 1870 I would look in both Bergen, and Mosinee.
