Staege Former Assistant Chief of Wausau Fire Department Expired Saturday Evening John L. Staege, who was retired from the Wausau fire department last March on pension after serving for nearly twenty one years, passed away at 6:30 o'clock Saturday evening at his home, 712 Jackson Street. He had been failing in health for more than three years and for the last ten months suffered very much. Funeral services will be conducted at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the St. Stephen's church by the Rev. William Spiegel. Interment will follow in Pine Grove cemetery. The deceased was born June 17, 1864 in Woodland, Wisconsin and had lived in Marathon County for more than fifty years. He was united in marriage with Miss Minnie Haasch in Wausau about thirty one years ago. In October 1898, the deceased entered the Wausau fire department, serving for many years in Engine House No. 1. About ten years ago, he was appointed fourth assistant fire chief with headquarters at Engine House No. 4, where he remained until 1918, when he was transferred to Station No. 3. Surviving are his widow and three children; Miss Vesta Staege of Wausau, John Staege of Rothschild and Leslie Staege of Babcock; two brothers, Albert Staege of Wausau and Gottlieb Staege of Merrill and four sisters; Mrs. Bertha Leise of St. Cloud, MN, Mrs. Johanna Kretlow of Wausau, Mrs. Amelia Montgomery and Mrs. Carrie Jossey of Merrill and And his mother, Mrs. Fredericka Staege of Wausau. Staege, 712 Jackson Street, were conducted at two o'clock this afternoon at St Stephen's church by the Rev. William Spiegel. Interment was in Pine Grove Cemetery. The pall bearers were William O. Ziebell, Harry Haverson, August Hoertsch, Rudolph Roloff, Robert Schochow and Otto Barthels, members of the Wausau Fire Department, in which the deceased served nearly twenty two years. He passed away last evening at 10:20 o’clock after an illness of four weeks, suffering from typhoid pneumonia. He was born in Wausau and was 20 years old, one month and two days. He leaves besides his parents, two brothers, John Jr. and Leslie, and one sister, Vesta. The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon. The service at the house will begin at 1:30 o’clock and at the Presbyterian Church at 2 o’clock. The Rev Frederick Werhahn will conduct both services. The cause of the young man’s illness is thought to have been a rain in which he got caught and drenched. It chilled him and the effects brought on a cold, which later developed into the sickness that claimed him in death.

She had lived here for 65 years and was a member of St Stephen’s Lutheran Church and the church’s ladies’ aid society, the Eagles auxiliary and the Milwaukee Railroad Women’s Club. Surviving her are two sons; John Staege of Rothschild, and Leslie Staege, Nekoosa; a daughter, Mrs. Cash Talarak, Antigo, and nine grandchildren. She also enjoyed spending time outdoors in nature and loved cheering on the Green Bay Packers. He spent many weekends fishing in Phillips by his in-laws, While farming, he had his own construction company for many years. In 1981,he and his wife purchased the Bohman?s Bar in Stratford-now known as Knoll?s Bar-which they operated until the present time. He was a member of St Joseph?s Catholic Church in Stratford, an Honorary Life member of the Knights of Columbus John Eisen Council 1799, the Elks Lodge 665 of Marshfield and the Stratford Lions Club. He later resided in Loyal, WI for 10 years, returning to the Marshfield area in 1988. He lived in Marshfield until entering the nursing center in February 1994. He was a member of St John's Catholic Church and its Holy Name Society. MARTHA BRUS FUNERAL HELD TUESDAY May 2, 1974 Funeral services for Mrs. Ralph (Martha) Brus, 74,who died at the Care Center in New Hampton,IA Thursday May 2, were held in St. Bernard Catholic Church here Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock. Father L. Paul Ouderkirk was celebrant of the con- celebrated mass and assisted by Father Herbert Tegeler of the Immaculate Conception Church, of Elma. Diane Brus was lector. Conway Funeral Service had charge of arrangements. Interment was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Six grandsons, LeRoy, Lyle and Dale Ries, David, Randy and Norman Brus served as casket bearers. VICTIM OF STROKE; Mrs. Brus, a long time resident of the community, never fully recovered from a stroke she suffered in February of 1957. She was a patient at the Care Center since November 1967. A daughter of the late Lambert and Margaret May Brost,Martha was born near Stacyville, IA February 5, 1900. At age 11,she moved to this community with her parents and resided on a farm south of town. On November 16, 1921, she was married to Ralph Brus at North Washington, IA. He preceded her in death December 30, 1958. The three children born in this marital union survive. They are Mrs. Raymond (Ardell) Ries of Elma, Dr. Roger Brus of Libby, Montana, and Quentin Brus of this place. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren; three brothers; Ernest, Leo and Lawrence Brost , all of Marshfield,WI; four sisters; Mrs. Aloysius (Loretta) Griesbach of Rozellville,WI;Mrs. Joe (Isabelle) Folz of Stratford, WI; Mrs. Henry (Dorothy) Linzmeier of Auburndale, WI; and Mrs. Gus ( Delphina) Bleichrot of Muskego, WI. Besides her husband and parents , she was preceded in death by one brother Delphin Brost and two sisters; Mrs. Mike (Christine) Nosbisch and Mrs. William (Stella) Schmidt. Gliniecki on Sept. 15, 1945, at St. Adalbert's Catholic Church. After his marriage to Evelyn, Ben played for and managed the Little Rose baseball team. Following that he began farming on the homestead farm in the town of Eau Pleine in Marathon County. Ben later left farming and began working at Stratford Homes in Stratford and finally retired from there in 1980. Ben loved spending time with his family and his grandchildren. He enjoyed watching or listening to the Brewers and the Cubs baseball teams or to any sporting event that his grandchildren were involved in. Ben loved to play cards with his family and friends. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Surviving Mr. Zaleski are his wife, Evelyn Zaleski of Stratford; two daughters and four sons, Christine (Dennis) Bredemann of Stratford, Kenneth (Charlotte) Zaleski of Marshfield, Allan (Susan) Zaleski of Stratford, Daniel (Nancy) Zaleski of Boyington Beach, Fla., Cheryl (Gil) Kattre of Abbotsford and Ben Jr. (Carmen) Zaleski of Stratford; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; his sister, Monica Fedak of Gary, Ind., and his brother, Harry Zaleski of Granton. He was predeceased by a daughter, Nancy Ann Zaleski on Aug. 21, 1974; by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.

I did not have the birthdates and was missing Anna and Peter. I have lots of info on John Werner. He was my grandfather. My mother, Mary Werner(daughter of John) is still living in Medford, WI. I also had Peter born in Altersdorf, Germany but cannot find such a place on the map. His wife was Anna Dahlen born in Moersdorf, Luxembourg which I cannot find either. Thanks again, Mary Ann

Fr. E. P. O'Toole officiating. The bride wore an attractive gown of white canton crepe and a veil in bandeau effect and her shower bouquet was of Sunburst roses and sweet peas. Attendants were Miss Dorothy Albrent and Miss Helen M. Wex, and Michael Gerum and Walter Koppa. The bride and groom left after the ceremony for a wedding trip. They will be at home to their friends after July 5th.
