    1. [WIMARATH-L] Hello Marathon List
    2. Liz Boulais
    3. Being new to this list I thought I would post some information about my family. My mother was born Anna Lenore Buttke in Boaz, Wisconsin (my mother and father are both still living, age 82, and celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary this year.) Her father was Carl F. Buttke (b. 28 OCT 1875) also in Boaz. Carl was married to Martha Angeline Sutton (b. 3 SEP 1885) in Boscobel, Wisconsin. Carl and Martha are buried at the Boaz Cemetery in Boaz, Wisconsin. Carl's father was Frederick Buttke. He was born in Germany and died in Wisconsin 5 MAR 1911. I would love to correspond with any Buttke's on this list to exchange information. Although I was born in Boaz, Wisconsin myself, I haven't had much chance to get to that part of the country. I was raised in the Washington, D.C. area, but now live in New Hampshire. So, if there are any "cousins" out there, please write. Thanks, Liz

    3. Thanks to all who responded to my query about Cemeteries. When we arrive in the Colby area, we will have a good idea of where to go to find the Brotherton grave sites. I have found a land record for purchase of land in Marathon co in 1881 by Miner Brotherton. If I am reading it correctly the 80 acres was near cty. N and Rosendale Ave. I have the full description if anyone could help off list. It is the only record we have that he was ever in WI. He was father of Richard W. Brotherton, and a lumberman per the 1860 census. Has anyone any knowledge of where the Brothertons lived? Thanks again for all the help! Kathy Parkinson

    3. Kathy, "Marathon County, Wisconsin, Cemetery Inscriptions: An Every Name Index" was compiled in 1986. Our library has a copy. I am not aware that the index or any accompanying inscriptions are online. Under the surname BROTHERTON are entries for Alvin, Ella, Lulu, Marion, R.W., Regina, Richard, Robert, Sofia, and Sophia. According to the index, they are all buried in cemetery 104, Colby Memorial cemetery in section 13 of Colby township, Clark County. I presume you're aware that there's a jurisdictional complication here because Colby is literally part in Marathon County, part in Clark County. This complication would certainly influence the search for any official records. Fortunately, this cemetery index also included some inscriptions from adjacent counties. The inscriptions are in bound volumes at Marathon County Public Library in Wausau, WI. I do not know of any other locations where they can be reviewed. 3. Hello list, I have 3 sisters who are descendants of Richard W. Brotherton who resided in Colby most of his married life. These gals are coming to WI from California to see the old home grounds, and their ancestors graves. They will be arriving June 21. My records show that Richard W. Brotherton and his wife Sophia Haseltine died in Colby, or Hull. The 1920 census lists them in Hull, Marathon Co. WI. dates I have: Richard W. Brotherton (son of Miner C. Brotherton and Jane Roberts) b. 25 Nov 1843, Catherine, Schulyer Co., NY or 24 Nov 1844, Geneva, Ontario Co., NY d. 3 Apr 1925, Hull, Marathon Co., WI or or Apr 5, 1925 , Colby, Marathon Co., WI Sophia Brotherton (dau. Rev. William B. Haseltine and Sarah Porter Woodruff) b. 29 Dec 1850, Crown Point, Essex Co., NY d. 24 Mar 1925, Colby, Marathon Co., WI It appears that some of their children were born around Black River Falls, Jackson co, WI and others around Baraboo, Sauk Co, WI. (Rev. Haseltine married this couple in 1880 at Black River Falls. The Haseltine homestead is in Baraboo township.) Is there an index for cemeteries in the Colby area, or does anyone happen to know where this couple is buried? I am assuming that they were Methodists. A couple of the children were married in Hull 1899 and 1900. Any help would be greatly appreaciated. Kathy Parkinson
