2. I am looking for information regarding naturalization papers on my maternal great-grandfather Scepan Burzynski (Stephen Buzinski) who according to the 1900 federal census immigrated to U.S. in 1884. My question is where are records from that period archived? Thank you, Anita Dour Poitras

All I know is he immigrated with Charley J REINKE b 1863 Marienberg, Western Germany and wife Wilhelmina b 1864 Pomerania, Germany - and were on the 1900 census in Wausau, MarathonCoWI. In Charley's obit, it stated he lived in Milwaukee, WI for 15 years prior to moving to Cloquet, CarltonCoMN. This contradicts the 1900 census which says, he, Wilhelmina, and Emil immigrated in 1891. R/S MAK http://www.rootsweb.com/~wiwood/MAK-roots ++++++++++++++++++++++++ Do you still have the book/journal from which the photo came? I'd like to know if accompanying copy refers in more detail to what group is shown, beyond "City of Colby Government". If a copy of the "Colby Centennial: Then & Now 1873-1973" is not available, can you do a higher resolution scan of the photo? If either of you are related to August Kuehl of Colby, Wisconsin, then we are relatives. (If not, please advise any other information you may have about his involvement in Colby City government. Perhaps a Village Board member, etc.) August Kuehl is my great, great grandfather. My name is Jeffrey Erwin Kuehl, age 52, residing in Wilmette, Illinois. I am the second son/child of Melvin Kenneth Kuehl (1922-1993) Kenosha, WI, who was the only child of William August Kuehl (1883-1958) Waukegan, IL, who was one of two (or 3, I'll find out) children of August Wilhelm Kuehl, Colby, WI who emigrated from "Prussia" (as stated on his immigragtion papers) in 1867. My family understood that he was a tailor by profession. However, what I've just given you is off the top of my head, since I found your photo while at work. My detailed files are at home & I'll check them out further & forward any information you want. My family tree is still only in preliminary stages. Thanks to a great job by a cousin in Chicago, I have much information about the Schwantes family but very little about the Mellenthin family. I am also interested in the Carlson families, but because I grew up in Brighton Township and attended Romeo, Unity and Colby schools, I know quite a bit more about that family. 1. [WIMARATH-L] observations about census takers
    2. I think that every one of us has cursed out the census enumerators as we have tried to decipher the names they wrote. I am reading a book (which by the way is most interesting) and came on this paragraph, which to me is the best example of why this happened! >From pages 34 and 35, from "A Firestorm at Peshtigo" by Denise Gess and William Lutz "His last name was Lemke, Lem, Lempke, or Lamp, depending on the census takers who spelled by sound, or scribbled out names sloppily, often misinterpreting what the German Immigrants with only a sprinkling of English at their disposal tried to tell them. Sometimes the immigrants deliberately provided misinformation. A mutual mistrust existed between the census takers, and the "foreigners", mostly the result of the immigrant farmers fear that the men who were taking count of the household were also looking to increase the taxes on their land." And by the way, I have been working on indexing some cemeteries in Lincoln County - I have one more to put on line - but the ones I have done can be found on the Miscellaneous section of the Lincoln County web page. Lincoln County Wisconsin WiGenWeb I will be gone for a few days, so if you write and I don't answer, that is why! 3. Wedding The Stratford Journal Friday, June 13, 1919 Obernberger - Miller MARRIED Tuesday morning June 10, 1919 at St. Josephs church was solemnized the marriage of Mr. Anton Miller of Racine, and Miss Barbara Obernberger, daughter of Mrs. John Obernberger of this village, Rev. J. L. Schumacher performing the ceremony. The bridesmaids were Mrs. Jake Becker, sister of the bride, and Miss Lillian Papkala of Wausau and the best men were Mr. John Obernberger, brother of the bride and Mr. Joe Kaiser of Athens. The bride was attired in white Satin under Georgette crepe and wore a wreath and veil and carried a bouquet of sweet peas, tea roses and daffodils. The bridesmaids wore white hats and their dresses were of corn color organdy under white net. The groom wore a dark blue suit. A wedding dinner was served to the immediate relatives and friends of the contracting parties. The young couple will make their home at Racine, where the groom is connected in business with his four brothers in the Miller printing office. The out-of-town guests, who attended the wedding were Mr. and Mrs. Joe Kundinger of Auburndale, Mr and Mrs. John Kaiser of Athens, Dr. and Mrs. H. Wahl of Wausau and Anthony Kaiser of Athens. ----------- I am searching for a connection between the Athens Kaiser family and that of the Webertown Settlement in Marathon County. Family lore has it that my great great grandfather, Andreas Kaiser walked to Athens to visit with his relatives.. but I don't know how they were related. Anyone know of a connection, please write me at [email protected] Patti Laessig
