They paid bonds in Louisiana too. I guess it was custom of the day. I saw three hundred and to me that was expensive for my parents who were born in the late 1800's. I am a little too lazy to find the records and see the exact price but people had to sign stating they would go the bond.

Yes, how much would $300, or even $150, translate to today? People would be squealing in outrage.
