    3. Phyllis, I'm not a descendant of that line, although there may well be a connection. My line is through Betsy Walker, said to be full-blooded Cherokee. Her daughter Elizabeth married Edward "Ned" Leatherwood, and they had a daughter who married my 4gr-grandfather Benjamin Hyde. His son John Aaron Hyde was born in what was then Burke County (probably now McDowell) and settled in Swain County where he farmed and raised his second family which included my gr-gr-grandfather Samuel Hyde. A member of the Leatherwood list is presently (I think) in Swain County researching Betsy Walker, attempting to prove her Cherokee descent and find out more about her family. I have a volume The Heritage of Swain County NC, published in 1987 that contains several articles concerning the Leatherwoods. I'm not directly connected to them but they are interesting. There are also articles about the Hydes and their descendants, writtten mostly by my sister. It sounds like there is a connection somewhere, surely.
