Hi Valerie As I mentioned in my original post "I have no other information on James and Matilda Wilson, living possibly in NY abt. 1840. Other than their names and the one known child born unto them Charles Henry Wilson." I only know of the one child, for I have never found the parents and Charles Henry listed in 1850 or 1860 census and if I could, then I could see if there were any other siblings or even grandparents. The reason I put 1840, is because Charles was born 18 Feb 1843, and in NY if you believe the census...His death certificate www.computer-firstaid.com/begnal_enterprises/genealogy/wilson/chwdeath.jpg states Place New York Town New York State of Country and for parents their names as above and New York City. This leads me to believe they were in the USA in 1843. But you cannot believe death certificates either. When Charles H. Wilson died, 12 Aug 1894, New Haven, CT, he was 51 and very possible his parents still alive. I do not know if Charles came to America on his own or with his parents. Just because the death cert. states New York City, I have a grandmother born in Hungary and every US census has she was born in New York. I go by census first to locate the family and then to city directories to locate each year if possible. This helps me to know when they left NY and moved to CT. Your Wilsons being from Orang Co. is quite possible my Wilsons come from there. Buy New York City (Manhattan) is not in Orange Co. I subtract 20 years from a birth date to come up with an approximate year born of the parents. So I place James and Matilda being born about 1823. Sometimes the men are older, so your John could possibly be a brother or cousin to my James. However, I have not one piece of evidence to point to your John, Orange Co. or NJ. Just the death certificate of Charles. The birth info I have on one of his sons my great grandfather Charles Garfield Wilson, is 18 Nov 1868, Spring (which is a street), mother, Mary H. Coan, born Ireland and father Charles H. Wilson, New York. And Charles G. is listed as Charles A. However, per the 1st Congregational Church, New Haven...he is Charles Garfield and the obits. Who are John Wilson's children, wife? How far back have you found him by documents? I have you ever used RAOGK? I belong to Ancestry, HQ and FHC, and you would think I could find a James, Matilda and Chas/Charles age 12 (1860) or 17 (1870) in the census and without using a state. I have come very close, only if his wife's name was not Matilda. I have seen Matilda with an H in it. Maybe she is called Mattie. I have a great Aunt born Adelaide Katherine Begnal, but she always went as Kate A., which is not hard to find. Another a great grandmother possibly named Mary Elizabeth O'Shaughnessy, and always known just Elizabeth, so I do not know if she has a middle name or Elizabeth is her middle name. I cannot find her with a birth year of about 1888 with parents in the 1900 census. I do not even know who her parents were. And I have found my Wilson's in the census as Wolson and Willson. But I have used every variation, with/without soundex, with wildcards and I even put together an Excel file with every variation I can think of, with columns & blocks for the census years I can check off, how many by a match of the given and surname there are for that particular census year. And if I find another possibility, I add to the file. Best wishes, I am sure you have tried everything and probably been researching longer than me......sorry if I was redundant and boring, Doc [email protected] wrote: > >In a message dated 1/30/2005 8:01:43 AM Eastern Standard Time, >[email protected] writes: > >My GGGGF is James and Matilda Wilson, living possibly in NY abt. 1840. > >This may come to naught, but my Wilsons are from Orange Co, NY which is >across the Hudson from that part of CT.
