He was brought to Augusta County as a child and grew up in the area known as Rockbridge, Augusta County. He was known as quite a scholar in Latin and Greek, but the book doesn't say where he was educated, neither does it mention who his parents were. He died 1834 in Pittsylvania County, VA. He pastored a church called Tinkling Spring in Augusta County from 1780-1814. On later census records he was found in Waynesboro, VA. but at some point before his death moved to Pittsylvania County, VA. The Annals of Augusta County says he was proficient in Latin and Greek. Following a severe illness he recovered and had forgotten English, but remembered Latin and Greek. He eventually remembered English. Does that help you identify him? I have the book The Annals of Augusta County, VA. (1886, Waddell) and found record of Rev. William Wilson. I've looked at what was said about him several times and wondered who their children might be. I'm assuming that you have looked on the vital statistics of ancestry.com and saw that he died in Pittsylvania County, VA, 1834. Looks like he had slaves, but not sure if he had children, or who they were. Do you happen to know? I'm thinking that in prior searches I found the name of his wife, but don't see it tonight. I believe that our Wilsons came along this same trail, then went to Greenville County, S.C. Our GG grandfather was Alvin Wilson (b. 1816) and I've searched for years to find out who his father was. Other Wilsons in the area came as Quakers from Chester County, Pennsylvania, late 1700s and were there into the early to mid 1800s. Those who left seem to have gone to Indiana. My brother has DNA matches who went up that way, some still live in Indiana. One match had ancestry in Danville, VA. prior to the Civil War. Danville is in Pittsylvania County, so there is a strong likelihood that he would have been a son or grandson of William Wilson. Would be glad to share info with you. What is your Wilson connection?
