Pat: I noticed on another e-mail to you that someone suggested that your "L" might be an "H". You may have already thought of this, but I'd like to suggest my way of solving these "old handwriting" problems on the censuses. I look all around on that page (and others before and after) for that same style of letter, to compare it with. Hopefully, it will be in a name that there is no doubt in your mind what letter it is. I've used this method several times to successfully solve the problem you've mentioned.
