    3. Can we find out what was going on in Obion Co. TN during the 1850's??????? I wish I had the time to do a database of towns mentioned frequently by different surname researchers. Some of my ADAMS/MARLIN lines that ended up in White Co. IL from Chester Co. SC were at a time (and some remained I believe) in Obion Co. TN. Back before the rail roads people could only travel by stage coach across the country and as land opened up they would relocate with many family members and neighbors together. They wouldn't take off alone just one family - way too dangerous. Generally someone had gone ahead of them with a group and would let family know back home to come out etc..... Or they'd read it in the papers..... From out west land was opening up etc. Whatever the means, they'd pack up and head out for new land, which was all along the rivers. Obion Co TN is right along the river which if you follow it up a ways you end up near Paducha Ky. So there was a "city" there at least we know that...... Must have been trade going on... Which means homes...land, transportation on the river.... Etc. It was formed in 1823 from Native American lands, and platted on March 16, 1825; In 1838, the State having appropriated $31,000 to be used in the improvement of Obion River, H. J. P. Westbrook, James Harper and James M. Hunter were appointed commissioners on the part of Obion County to superintend the work. But little benefit, however, was derived from this work. The Mobile & Ohio Railroad was completed through the county in 1858, and the Nashville, Chattanooga &St. Louis at a little later date. The Memphis & Paducah, now the Chesapeake, Ohio & Southwestern, was not completed until after the close of the war. The county voted no aid to any of these roads. So word gets out and there's work to be had, land to build upon.. And a new town rises. If we follow the towns along the rivers we will find a lot of our people and sometimes Wilson's and are no relation to other Wilsons. Its so very confusing and keeps us busy. Ours were in Wilson Co, TN around 1830 or so, and in Gibson/Obion Co, TN by 1850. From there they moved out to New Madrid Co, MO and Texas.
