In the meantime, there is a real virus going around. I'm not sure how it works but my mailbox has sent several e-mails without my knowledge and they all have an attachment on them. Actually, they have two. One says DLGSTRSV.TXT. and is a text file. The other has different titles to it. I have recieved them at least twenty times in the last two weeks from various people I did not know and so, never downloaded them but obviously they still affected my computer. So, if you happen to recieve an e-mail from me that has one or both of these attachments, delete them immediately. List, I don't understand why you post virus message to this genealogy list it is off topic and forbidden. Nadine Admin
There are worms/virus that steal addresses and messages from the lists, etc. That virus may not have come from your computer. If you have virus protection and keep the definitions updated then you should be able to fend them off. Emryld wrote: > In the meantime, there is a real virus going around. Just because you found it on your system, doesn't mean it's a virus. It's a legitimate file according to the Symantec website and everybody that has a Windows version will find it listed. I believe I read on the Symantec site that this same "virus hoax" has circulated before. Anytime you receive a message like this particular alert, you should check it out before going to the trouble to remove something based on heresay. Just type the word "symantec" into your browser's URL and you'll find the info you're looking for. The VanZant (VanSant) name appears in my family. My ancestoral line runs back to a connection to the Ruark/Hester family of Putnam Co Indiana. There is a VanZant family who helped start the North United Methodist Church in Indianapolis IN (Originally Mapleton IN in Marion Co) in 1836. My dad says there were some VanZants in Pennsylvania. Some of the VanZants (three brothers) left Indianapolis to go back to Pennsylvania from Indiana to claim a 100 year lease on some property that was due to run out. Two of the brothers returned to IN the other one settled in PA. I've not done much research in this area, but hope to soon. Does any of this info sound familiar? Get in touch with me personally at jrbristow@att.net if you want the name of some researchers who were working on the Ruark family and are now going another direction. They may be doing research on the VanZant side of the family. Okay list.....I've sent this information privately to the first person who posted. Since our administrator will not give us some assurance.. I will! This is what it IS and what you should do to recover your file. Just a reminder.....ANYTIME you receive information about a "rampant virus" you should do your homework. It's very easy to find out whether it is a hoax or not. Just use your mouse and some common sense and you CAN find out if it is true or not. Symantec (Norton's Daddy) always finds the information for you. It is no hoax, George. I found it on mine. I suggest you follow the directions and delete it.It is not like she intentionally gave us the virus, she did give us directions on how to get rid of it, not mention she let us know what happened. ----- Original Message ----- From: "George Wilson" <gwwilson@webtv.net> To: <WILSON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 29, 2002 4:59 PM Subject: Re: [WILSON-L] I have a virus...it was sent to you...sorry > This is a hoax according to anoter message I received. > GW > > > > > > > > > > ==== WILSON Mailing List ==== > Please change subject line when changing the thread.
Yes, of course you found the file on your computer. The hoax is that you have been tricked into removing a file that Windows needs to run properly. -----Original Message----- From: Nikki Rose [mailto:nrose@customfinishing.com] Sent: Wednesday, October 30, 2002 8:35 AM To: WILSON-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [WILSON-L] I have a virus...it was sent to you...sorry It is no hoax, George.
