That is what it is, an it happened elsewhere. Swain County, NC has it's Fontana lake, which covered up the village of Fontana where my mother grew up. When you place a person in search and you can't find them on ancestry.com, you should check each census year.
I should have said one more thing. Ancestry.com sends me an email notice when it is time to renew, and I don't have trouble getting help from them, usually within 24 hours. A few months ago, a tech support woman and I emailed back and forth in real time until I had the answer I needed. Also, last year when I had a problem with something that was supposed to be there but wasn't, they added an extra month to my subscription year because of it. I've said enough--everyone can tell that I highly recommend it. Somehow I missed the original question about ancestry.com and genealogy.com, but I'd like to say that I'm not going to be without ancestry.com ever, I hope. Yes, there are things that are frustrating; the fact that the 1860 through 1910 censuses not indexed, for example; and the thing that REALLY bothers me is the fact that Tennessee censuses are not linked to the images. They assure me that they're working on it, but the sooner the better, because TN is the state I'm researching the most right now. Now those are my criticisms, but as I said, I'll continue subscribing. All the genealogy.com censuses are not indexed either, so a friend and I have an arrangement. I have ancestry.com; he has genealogy.com; so we look in the indexes for each other, since the indexed years are not the same in both programs. Works for us! I should have added that even though all the years are not indexed, in their databases are indexes for several states for all the years. Once I have the page number from there, it's not TOO difficult and time-consuming to find the image page. Hi Listers, I've been reading all these postings about ancestry.com, and I have to agree with Barbara. It's not perfect, but I subscribe to the entire package and do not plan to give it up. I've been a subscriber about 5 years now, and I've always been contacted when it's time for renewal, most often by phone. Certainly, it will be much better when they complete the census index for all the years, and get the images all linked properly, but I have found many cousins in all my lines which offsets any difficulties with the census images. When I come across errors, I report them to rightnow@ancestry.com and they always respond within 24 hours. For the annual fee, I don't think you could do much better. I got ancestry.com for 79.00 last night maybe I'm safe for a year, before another increase. I think it was 69.00 last year. I figure 6.00 a month beats rolling a microfilm reader, leaving home and sometimes waiting on the film. Maybe I'll we'll have found the majority of the clan soon. I do agree that all of these outfits try to insulate themselves from their subscribers. Genealogy.com is having a 14 day free trial on their census if you act before May 27. Of course you have to give them your credit card number over the internet because they won't list a phone number on any of their advertising they send out. This is the last number that I got from them about a year ago when I ordered their service. (you'd better copy this one down) Genalogy.com If you ever need to cancel your subscription, call 800-548-1806 any time. So Ancestry.com bought Genealogy.com. I guess that means they pretty much run the whole show now. Time for another price hike, eh! They have improved. I've found the 1920 census index is not reliable. It has alot of good features however and saved me trips to the library. If I can't find someone, I don't rely of someone's transcription of the census. I go to the library and check again. Try it for 14 days free. Just be sure to keep up with the days and call to cancel. They will ask for a credit card and they will bill after 14 days. > > From: "Ami Sullivan" <AmiS@xenologix.com> > Date: 2003/05/01 Thu PM 02:15:37 EDT > To: WILSON-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [WILSON-L] Resources > > Hi > > I'm just starting research into our family Wilsons (A.M. I agree with Jeff Green. I wasn't going to say anything, but finally decided that Ancestry.com needs someone in their corner. LOL I have ALWAYS been notified by phone call and e-mail from the customer service people at Ancestry.com when it was renewal time. Never had them charge me anything without my permission first. I just wish they would hurry up with getting all the census records fully indexed! But, I am trying to be patient, as I can see they are working on it! That is a very big job!! My frutration in them.....and in every other ancestry site.....my great grandparents seem to have been dropped from a space ship!! Anybody have Wilsons from Ohio....that just might have had a son born in 1830 by the name of Ananias Wilson?? PLEASE?? Thanks, Karol Wilson Gale Subject: Re: [WILSON-L] Resources Date: Thu, 01 May 2003 18:44:37 -0400 From: Jeff Green <skeech@comcast.net> To: WILSON-L@rootsweb.com Ancestry.com has always called and also sent me e-mails to let me know ahead of time when my subscription is up for renewal. Is anyone working on Wilsons in Coshocton county OH? I have and Ellen Jane Wilson (apparently went by 'Jane' most of her life) who was born 1845 in Ohio. She married John T McCullough from Coshocton county, Ohio. Jane died 1890 in Iowa. Thanks...Gloria
If you're concerned about the speed, it's not the service, it's your internet connection. I use broadband and there's nothing slow about the way Ancestry.com or Genealogy.com work. The problem with viewing images online is that that you have to wait for them to transfer to your computer, just as if you were downloading them. The average census image is about 1/4 megabyte. Even on the fastest dial-up connection it takes about a minute to completely display on your computer screen. The search engine in Genealogy.com won't do discriminate searches. In other words. They have all of these fields that you can fill in with known, or supposed information to narrow down the number of hits, like on RootsWeb's World Connect search. The only thing is, if you search for John Brown; Salem, Essex, MA; born 1748;, you'll still get every entry in the world for John Brown. I'm talking thousands of entries, from Maine to California. I complained numerous times over the period of my one year membership, which by the way, I'm not renewing. On occasion you'll find something after spending hours looking through all of the unintended matches. But I find that to be a tremendous waste of time. I had better luck ordering microfilms from the LDS to view at their Family History Center. Personally, I'd recommend Ancestry.com. Not always true. ancestry.com does have bandwidth problems. I have 1.5Mb DSL access and I have to wait numerous times for downloads. Also, I have subscribed to ancestry.com for three years and they sent me one email in the beginning advising me that my subscription would automatically renew. Yes, you can find an 800 number to call to cancel but you have to look very hard to find it. Anyway, after three months (the minimum subscription time), who can remember a phone number? The three years I have subscribed, the service has been problematic, but what else is there? Right now, when I search and the results are displayed, I cannot access the Membership & Directory results. I have attempted to contact ancestry.com and advise them they have a programming problem but again, it is like they do not want people to contact them for any reason. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jeff Green" <skeech@comcast.net> To: <WILSON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, May 01, 2003 5:59 PM Subject: Re: [WILSON-L] Resources > If you're concerned about the speed, it's not the service, it's your > internet connection.
