3. Teresa, Are you aware of any other family members for Nancy WILSON? My ggggrandfather was born in Indiana, but I've never been able to find out who they are. Their son, Andrew Jackson Wilson, was born in Illinois in 1847. Any information will be helpful. Who knows maybe there is a connection. 3. Hi, Before I take a photo of a tombstone I spray it with distilled water so the letters are darker. Also, for older tombstones I use a child's paintbrush to carefully clean off the moss and/or dirt from the letters. Hope this helps, Jan Jordan in Vermont

    2. Hello: Shaving cream may damage the stone. Whip Cream is much better. You can add a frosting die to this and make it darker if you wish. Be sure and clean up your mess when done.

    2. LWilson181@aol.com asks: "Are these "don'ts" based on real data or just passed down opinions garnered by someone else? If they are based on real data, please provide the location so I can go there and read it for myself" A number of articles can be found on About.com about cemetery preservation. You can read those articles and assess the validity of the authors' credentials by going to: http://genealogy.about.com/cs/cemeterytips/ Several articles speak to the use of shaving cream and one explains thusly: ......To begin with, the exact formulas for shaving creams are corporate trade secrets however, it is common knowledge that most contain emollients to soften the skin, while at the same time protecting it. Shaving Cream also contains a chemical known as stearic acid (defined by Britannica.com as "a c olourless, waxy solid that is almost insoluble in water") which will cause the surface of the stone to exfoliate, especially if that stone is either granite, marble or limestone. Granite is an igneous rock, and therefore highly susceptible to any type of chemical weathering. By putting shaving cream on the stone, you are doing the same thing acid rain does over a long period of time, only you are hastening the destruction. Marble and Limestone are highly reactive to acids, and will actually sublimate in the presence of hydrochloric acid. That means it will go from a solid to a vapor without a liquid stage, as it releases certain parts of its chemical structure. Further reason for not using shaving cream lies in the potential damage over a very long period of time, not just a few years. The chemicals in shaving cream will permeate into the microscopic pores of the stone and will not be readily washed out. These chemicals, which consist of soaps, mineral oil, fatty alcohols and other skin conditioners are all organic compounds which are biodegradable. Since they are biodegradable, they provide food for microscopic organisms, fungi, mosses, etc. The growth of such organisms in the pores of a stone causes expansive forces which will gradually cause microscopic particles of the stone to be flaked off. These enlarged microscopic pores can also collect moisture in wet freezing weather and the freezing action causes microscopic fractures of the stone because, as you know, water expands upon freezing. In other words, only completely chemically inert materials should ever contact a tombstone.... Gail

    2. How about the opposite: Since you don't own the stone; can you guarantee that what you are doing will NOT harm the stone or the engraving? It's not your property to experiment with (a preposition is what you should never end a sentence with). What would you say to me, as you sprayed shaving lotion on my ancestors gravestone, when I came to see how the gravesite was being maintained? Roger

    2. The real "skinny" on tombstones. I have read all the "dos" and "don'ts" regarding the best way to read old tombstone inscriptions. I certainly do NOT have the answer, but reading all the "don'ts" leads me to wonder about the scientific validity of some of them - like pencil rubbings, shaving cream etc. True anything CAN leave a chemical residue, including merely touching the stone with your hand. But, is there anything more harmful than the natural elements contained in the atmosphere? Are these "don'ts" based on real data or just passed down opinions garnered by someone else? If they are based on real data, please provide the location so I can go there and read it for myself.

    3. James and Barbara, They say you should do absuelutly nothing to old tombstone because even rubbing a pincel over paper will leave some chems on it or could cause it some other damage. One can catch the Sun (light) casting a shadow over it and some time that will help or maybe use a flash light standing between the direction of the Sun to cast a shadow oner it. Hope this helps. 3. Another way, one that is less controversial, is to spray the stone with water and wait until it starts to dry. The surface will dry quicker than the engraving. This is particularly helpful if you want a photo of the stone itself looking 'natural' Many feel that applying anything with a chemical in it may harm the natural finish of the stone. I don't know for certain if this is the case with shaving crème, but one must be careful with granite countertops, as anything with an oil in it does remove the shiny finish and it must be repolished. Many shaving crèmes contain moisturizers, which may contain some oils. Cindy

    3. Hello, Trying to read a dark stone is hard to do. My old aunt takes a bag of flour, yes kitchen flour, and we sprinkle it on the stone and the engraving is readable. The last time she took her talcum powder and dusted them with the fuzzy thing that comes in the powder. Pictures come out well but you can tell we've put powder on some of them. A container of baby powder would work too and would be easy to carry along. 3. Linda, Hi, I did find a little bit about this line, from census records. But not too much...... First off, they lived in Park township, in Sedgwick county, Kansas. I first found Nancy in the 1900 Sedgwick county directory index. Going to the directory, Park township - she is listed by herself, as Nancy H. Wilson. So I then went to the 1900 census.... there I found: on page 7, of the Park township census, family 121: 1)Marion Edwards, age 42, white, male, farmer, b. Aug 1827. Of Indiana, father birthplace-Nebraska, mothers birthplace-Indiana. 2)Katherine D., wife, age 36, white, female, b. Oct. 1863, Of MN. fathers birthplace-Kentucky, mothers birthplace-Tennessee. 3)Alverda(sp?) B. Klugh, niece, age 9,white,female, b. Mar 1891, Of In., father birthplace-Indiana, mothers birthplace-Indiana. 4)Nancy Wilson, mother-in-law, age 67, white, female, b. Aug 1802. Of TN. Father birthplace-TN, mothers birthplace-TN. 5)William McAmy, farm-hand,age 32, White, male, b. Feb 1868, of Missouri, father and mothers birthplace-unknown. Then I went to the 1880 census: Park township, Page 8 Family 85 1)John Wilson, age 52, Farmer, born-Ky, father-Va. mother-Va. 2)Nancy, wife, age 50, born-TN, father-TN, mother-TN. 3)unreadable, daughter, age 18, b.MN, 4)Catherine, daughter, age 16, b. MN, 5)Marion Edwards, son-in-law, age 25, b.IL And in the Sedgwick County Marriages, I found: Katie D. Wilson m. Marion Edwards, on March 18, 1883. Note: On the 1880 census, I couldnt read the name of the older daughter. It looked as though the name began with an S. But couldnt make it out for sure. Hope this helps you somewhat.
