Did your Zacheus Wilson come from David or Zacheus (brothers) in Sumner Co TN? Roberta Padgett [email protected]
Washington, DC October 3, 1863 The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God. In the midst of a civil war of unequalled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theater of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union. Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defence, have not arrested the plough, the shuttle, or the ship; the axe had enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years, with large increase of freedom. No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and voice by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility and Union. In testimony whereof, I have here unto set my hand, and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed. Done at the city of Washington, this third day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the independence of the United States the eighty-eighth. A. Lincoln
I am very interested in seeing what Jim's question about the use of the name Tilman/Tilmon/Tilghman turns up. In our middle Tennessee Williamson Co. Wilson family, Louisa (sometimes called Eliza) Wilson, born in 1805, first married Zaccheus Wilson on 25 April 1822 in Williamson Co., and after his death she married Tilmon/Tilman D. Hinson, shown on the 1850 Census as being a cabinetmaker born in North Carolina, on 14 November 1842 in Marshall Co., TN, but after that they lived in Williamson Co. Her children by him were James H., born ca.1843, Sintha, born ca.1844, Milton, born ca.1846, Thomas N., born ca.1849, and Tennessee, born ca.1850. I don't know whether the name Tilmon/Tilman was given to later Hinson descendants of Tilmon Hinson and Louisa/Eliza Wilson. By the 1870 Census, her name was given as Eliza, and she was shown as a widow living next to her son Robert H. by her first husband, Zaccheus. She and Zaccheus had three other children according to a court deposition she made relating to her mother, Jane McDowell Wilson, wife of Robert Wilson, Jr. My main research interest is in finding the names of these 3 other children. The 5 children of another Zaccheus Wilson, Jr., who went to TX and died in 1843 in Mexico, married to Nancy White, (William F., Parmelia A., Mary M., George Z., and Sarah E. Wilson), have been confused with the 4 children of this Zaccheus Wilson, who died in TN (either in Dyer Co. or Williamson Co.) before November 1834. I hope some of this will ring a bell for somebody, though I don't expect that it will connect to Jim's SC Tilman Wilsons. I have made no progress in years on my WILSON line. I know a lot of stuff, but still hitting the brick wall and bouncing back to where I have been for a few years. names associated with this family. CONANT, CROMWELL, BROADHEAD, BROWNELL, FONTENELL, PICKERING, BARRICK, . Robert Preston WILSON, born April 1836, in England. Family lore say he was born in Preston England. Family lore also says that he was sent back to England as a teen to learn the Woolen Manafacturing trade. He worked in the Mills at Blue Rapids KS in the 1880 census and according to a slip I found in the family bible he at one time owned and operated one. Unknown where it was located. Immigrated in 1840 according to the 1900 census. I have no documented record of him at all until his marriage in Marion county MO 15 Sept 1877 to Calista Catherine CONANT, widow of Charles LAM or LANE. Son Charles went by the WILSON name all his life. Unknown if he was legally adopted. Robert and Calista had 2 surviving children (twin sons died within days of birth) Frederick Robert b Oct 1879 in Blue Rapids, Marshall, KS Ellen Leona b 29 Nov 1884 in Independence, Jackson, MO. According to a bio on son Frederick the family lived in Montineau county MO from about 1885/6 to about 1895 or so and returned to Independence MO. Robert is in the Topeka, Shawnee, KS census in 1900 and died there in July 1903. He was buried in Independence MO according to death notices and a page from the family bible, but is not listed in any of the published indexes I have found to date. Calista Catherine's mother was a member of the LDS church and later acepted into the RLDS church. This may be the tie to Independence MO. Son Frederick was an actor and worked with the Stock Theaters in the mid west. He started on stage in Haniball MO at the age of 14. He one time was part owner of a company "Baird and Wilson". Frederick also acted on stage in NY and in LA in the early 1900'. This taken from a book about the Stock Theaters called "Footlights on the Prarie". Daughter Ellen Leona (Nellie) married first to a Robert SPRY and did a trapeze act with him. I have a copy of the billing with a picture of them. He died in a fall within a year of their marriage and she later married Thomas Blair CROMWELL in Topeka KS Feb 1908.
I saw Bob's post about TilmanWilson, and decided to ask again for info from people who have the name Tilman or Tillman or Tilghman in their lines. It is thought that my GGGf Isaac Newell Wilson had a son John Tillman Wilson, perhaps born & died in 1851. This isn't proven (for me), however. But there are several persons in Isaac's line who have the name Tillman. All of these were born in SC as far as I can determine. Can anyone shed light on the Tillman family who may be connected to these SC Wilsons, who it is thought came from Alabama before the Civil War? Jim Swanson
An Algernon Wilson, Esq. was in Charleston SC in late 1700s, probably had a son, Jehu. Jehu had a son, Jesse, who migrated to GA and then to Marion Co., MS where lived in 1812 and 1813. His father, Jehu, may have joined Jesse in that area. Lawrence County, Ms formed 1814 out of Marion County and Jesse was there. A Jesse WILSON was in the 1818 state census of Mississippi and the 1820 federal census of Lawrence County. He was on the Lawrence County tax lists for Falling Creek 1818-1820, on Shoals Creek 1822, and the Jesse WILSON "estate" was taxed on Halls Creek in 1824. It appears that Josiah Wilson b. 1804, was the son of this Jesse Wilson. Josiah shows up in Lawrence County Ms. as head of a large household in the 1830 census (possibly family of Jesse Wilson). Josiah did not marry Lucinda Hargis until December of 1830. Josiah Wilson and family remained in Lawrence County until about 1845 when he moved to Claiborn Parish, La. to an area in which Lucinda's Hargis relatives were living. Ray
Yes Sue. I exhausted the census. There were many. Unfortunately I could not trace any. I am hoping that someone will find that connection that I haven't been able to. Thank you. Bob, Saw your posting listing the FRANCIS family. My. G.G. GF was Augustus "Anthony" FRANCIS born in France He married Elizabeth "Bettie" HILL, HOPKINS, TANNER a full blood Cherokee Indian born in Tenn. in June, 1840. They married in Jan., 1871 in Pine Bluff, Ark., Jefferson County. Augustus list his age as 41 so that would have him being born in 1830. To this union was born my G. GF-Eugene Anthony Francis 1873-1949. I don't know who Augustus' parents were or any info. on them, although I have found a census record in 1850 Ohio that list an Augustus Francis with his parents and the ages match. Hope we find a connection. I've got my Wilson line back to Early County GA from Montgomery AL. Edward Wilson married Frances Evans 27 Sept 1827 in Early County GA. Children in 1850 Early Co census were Rebecca, William, Nancy, George, Mary and Sysan born 25 Feb 1838 in GA. Edward was not listed in the 1850 census with Frances and the children. Susan married Louis Mayer 18 March 1856 in Montgomery AL. Attached to their marriage record is a letter giving permission for Susan to marry Louis Mayer signed by Mrs Frances Wilson. Louis was born 12 July 1825 in Hamburg. Susan died 15 Oct 1885 and Louis 29 July 1890. Both are buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Montgomery AL Louis was a professor of music and a musician i the Civil War Susan and Louis had children Estelle, Minnie, Annie, Eva, Charles, Mamie and Louis. All but Minnie were born in AL, Minnie in GA Estelle was vocal teacher in 1880 Montgomery city directory. Estelle married Harry Edwards 27 July 1880 Montgomery. Minnie married A W Mindler 6 April 1882 Montgomery. Charles married Sarah Adeline Keith in Birmingham AL and they are buried in Forest Hills Cemetery there. Louis is buried in Oakwood Cemetery. Any clues or ideas when or where Louis Mayer/Meyer came to the States. When and where he and Susan met and ANY information on Edward would be greatly appreciated Thanks Doris Mayer Reece Arthur Mayer Charles Mayer Charles Mayer Louis and Susan Wilson Mayer __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I do not know any of Richards siblings. Did Jacob live in the Ross Co. area? I could check him in my census records to see if one of approx. age lived nearby. Lets post all Josiah Wilsons and see if some of us can make a match. I am looking for possibly descendents of a: Josiah Wilson born btw. 1795 & 1800 Edgecombe, NC. d. unknown location bef 1819 when his unknown heirs were sued by another estate for debt. Josiah, the son of Willie / Wiley Wilson (ca 1773- 1805) of Edgecombe & Halifax, NC. Josiah had a sister Harriet Wilson born also btw. 1795 &1800.
One of the list servers was done but should be fine now. Always remember you can check Rootsweb Wilson list archives to see if you've missed anything. You can also check Rootsweb FAQ to see what's up? Hello Wilson List I have the Wilson family in my tree a couple of times, First a Ambrose Wilson born in 1872 married to Sarah Carr born in 1874. They had two children William in 1896 & Rachel Wilson in 1899. This family was on Manitoulin Island, Ontario. I also have another connection of a Jemima Wilson born in 1864 married to Walter J Wright born 1863 married in 1886. This family had 6 children before Jemima's death in 1903. Their first daughter is my great grandmother. I am looking for info on Jemima Wilson's family line. Thanks Ann Dearing London,Ontario
